Chapter 28 - The Calloused Hands

Val pushed the door open, shaking rain from his coat. Water dripped onto the floorboards as the storm howled outside, wind lashing against the windows. "Rose," he called, voice rough with exhaustion.

She peeked out from under the sheets, hair messy, eyes narrowed in the low lamplight. "What?"

"The nurse can't get through in this weather. You'll have to change my bandages."

Lora sat up, still clutching the sheet to her chest. "Why not ask Foxy? She's always so eager when it comes to you."

Val's jaw flexed. He crossed the room and dropped into the chair by the window, but the movement cost him. A wave of dizziness rolled through his body and cold sweat broke across his forehead. Lora noticed right away. Her expression shifted from irritation to something sharper. She slipped out of bed, pulled on a thin robe, and came over without another word. She slid a shoulder under his arm and helped him toward the bed.

"Fine," she muttered. "Sit still."
