When I woke up, the first thing I noticed was the darkness around me.


Not the kind of darkness that comes from closing your eyes or standing under thick trees at night. This darkness felt enclosed, heavy, almost thick in the air around me. It pressed against my skin, against my eyelids, against my chest as I slowly dragged myself back into consciousness.


My head felt heavy, foggy, like my thoughts were moving through thick water. My body ached everywhere—my shoulders, my back, my legs, even my fingers. There was a dull throbbing behind my temples that pulsed slowly with each beat of my heart.


A small flame flickers somewhere in the room.
