Chapter 14 - "What the Book Is Really About"

MIA POV

The email arrives at 8:43 PM.

I know the exact time because I am sitting at my desk pretending to read the assigned chapter when my phone lights up and I see the university domain and my stomach does something I am going to pretend did not happen.

I open it.

Ms. Cole,

Further to our meeting your instinct in paragraph three was exactly right, but you abandoned it too quickly. You made the correct identification and then retreated before following it to its conclusion. The argument you were building wanted to go somewhere. You stopped it at the door.

Specific notes below.

For paragraph three: the comparison you draw between the narrator's silence and complicity works, but only if you're willing to commit to the darker implication that silence is never neutral. You gestured at this. You didn't say it. Say it.

For paragraph six: cut the last two sentences. They explain the point you already made. Trust the reader.
