Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6: THE HONEYED CAGE

The atmosphere in the dark room was thick with a despair so suffocating it felt tangible. Shen Zhe sat motionless on the bed, his hollow eyes staring blankly into the void. Lin Yan's words—"You killed someone"—echoed in his mind like a funeral knell, each vibration carving another wound into his already shattered psyche.

Once a proud architectural genius, a young heir with a radiant future, he was now nothing more than a guilty murderer, cowering in the shadows to hide from the light of justice.

"Zhe... drink some water. Your lips are parched and cracked."

Lin Yan stepped in, looking frail and exhausted. Her eyes were swollen, as if she had just survived a grueling psychological war. she brought a glass of warm water to his lips, her fingers trembling slightly as if suppressing an overwhelming fear.

Shen Zhe suddenly lashed out, striking the glass from her hand. It shattered against the stone floor into a thousand jagged shards, water splashing across her shoes. He roared in agonizing despair:

"Why did you save me?! Why didn't you let the police take me? Why didn't you let me rot?! Do you realize you're harboring a criminal? Lin Yan, you'll be implicated! You'll lose your entire future because of a man like me!"

Lin Yan did not flinch. Faced with his madness, she suddenly dropped to her knees directly onto the pile of broken glass. Despite a sharp shard slicing deep into her knee, causing crimson blood to seep out and stain her pristine white dress, she didn't even blink. She lunged forward and clung to his waist, burying her head against his chest, which was heaving with rage and terror.

"My future is you!" she shrieked, her voice raspy with emotion. "If you're gone from this world, what is the point of me living alone? Shen Zhe, I don't care what you've done; I only know that you are the only person I love in this life. Even if the whole world sees you as a monster, I will stay by your side and protect you until my last breath. To have you, I am willing to go to hell!"

A deathly silence enveloped them. Shen Zhe's fury deflated like a punctured balloon before the insane, blind sacrifice of the girl in front of him. He looked down at the blood spreading across her knee, looked at her tear-stained yet steadfast face, and his once-granite heart melted completely.

With trembling, bruised hands, he reached out to grasp her shoulders and pulled her up onto the bed. For the first time in the three years she had pursued him, he was the one who proactively embraced the girl he had once so ruthlessly pushed away.

"You're so foolish... Lin Yan... why go this far for me?"

"I'm not foolish." Lin Yan looked up at him, her eyes glistening with a terrifying blend of adoration and obsession. "I'm simply protecting the only treasure of my life."

She gently pulled a small pill from her pocket—a potent mixture of high-dose sedatives and a trace of hallucinogens she had meticulously prepared.

"Take this. it will help you sleep. Trust me, when you wake up, everything will be fine. I've prepared an escape route for us. As long as you stay here, no one can snatch you from my hands."

Shen Zhe had been stripped of his last shred of resistance. He took the pill from her hand and swallowed it as if swallowing a vow of eternal loyalty to the darkness. The drug-induced haze hit him quickly, but this time it wasn't exhaustion—it was a strange, floating sensation of bliss.

In his stupor, he felt his lips touch something soft, cool, and carrying the faint scent of pomelo blossoms. Lin Yan was kissing him—a kiss that tasted of the bitter pill, yet possessed the power to soothe the sins tormenting his soul.

He returned the kiss—clumsy, fervent, and filled with the desperate hunger of a drowning man grasping for a lifeline. In the darkness of that sealed room, he hallucinated that he had found the angel who would redeem his life. In reality, he had just signed a contract to sell his soul to a demon wearing the face of the world's purest blossom.
