Chapter 67 - CHAPTER 67: First Target

The invitation came before the system could stabilize.

That alone made it suspicious.

Rei read the message once.

Then again.

Not because she hadn't understood it—but because repetition revealed intent more clearly than comprehension.

Meet me. Private. No witnesses.

No name.

No class.

No context.

And yet—

It was obvious.

She deleted it.

Not out of caution.

Out of acknowledgment.

Because refusing to respond was also a response.

And whoever had sent it—

Knew that.

The hallway felt different that morning.

Not quieter.

Not louder.

Structured.

As if invisible lines had been drawn overnight, separating influence from irrelevance.

Students adjusted their behavior without understanding why.

Eyes lingered longer.

Voices dropped slightly when she passed.

Recognition had matured into calculation.

Rei walked through it without reacting.

But she tracked everything.

Micro-delays in conversation.

Clusters forming where there had been none before.

The subtle absence of randomness.

The school was reorganizing itself.

And she—

Had become a factor in that equation.

She reached the classroom door and paused.

Not out of hesitation.

Out of alignment.

Because inside—

The next phase had already begun.

Horikita stood at the front again.

Earlier than usual.

Prepared.

The board behind her was already filled with columns of numbers.

Academic projections.

Physical performance estimates.

Pairing possibilities.

Rei scanned it in less than a second.

Incomplete.

"…You're early," Horikita said.

Not looking at her.

"…You're behind," Rei replied.

A brief silence followed.

Not hostile.

But sharp.

Horikita turned.

Her gaze moved directly to the board, then back to Rei.

"…Explain."

Rei stepped forward.

Calm.

Precise.

"…You're optimizing for balance."

"…That's necessary."

"…It's inefficient."

A pause.

"…Because balance assumes cooperation."

The room was still empty.

But the conversation carried weight.

Horikita's expression didn't change.

"…Continue."

Rei pointed once.

At a specific column.

"…You're pairing based on average performance."

"…Yes."

"…Then your ceiling is capped."

The words landed cleanly.

Because they were correct.

Horikita's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…And your alternative?"

Rei didn't hesitate.

"…Asymmetry."

A pause.

"…Deliberate imbalance creates volatility."

"…Volatility creates openings."

Horikita watched her carefully.

"…And risk."

Rei met her gaze.

"…Controlled risk."

The distinction mattered.

Because uncontrolled risk—

Was failure.

Controlled risk—

Was leverage.

Footsteps approached.

The class began to fill.

Conversations started.

Noise returned.

But the discussion—

Didn't end.

Horikita turned back to the board.

Erased one column.

Then another.

"…Show me."

Rei stepped forward.

Took the marker.

And rewrote the system.

Pairs shifted.

Not evenly.

Not fairly.

High performers—

Matched with unstable variables.

Weak links—

Isolated or reinforced.

Clusters formed.

Not for safety.

For control.

When she finished—

The board looked wrong.

Unbalanced.

Dangerous.

Horikita stared at it.

Longer than necessary.

"…If this fails—"

"…It won't," Rei said.

No arrogance.

No emotion.

Just certainty.

Horikita didn't argue.

Because arguing required doubt.

And doubt—

Wasn't present.

"…We'll test it," she said.

Rei stepped back.

Returned to her seat.

Because her role—

Was already defined.

Adjustment.

The message came again during break.

Different format.

Same intent.

You ignored me. That's interesting.

Rei didn't open it immediately.

She waited.

Three seconds.

Then five.

Then ten.

Because timing—

Was communication.

She opened it.

No new information.

Just pressure.

She closed it again.

Didn't respond.

Across the room—

Kushida watched her.

Smiling.

Always smiling.

But her attention—

Was too precise.

She had noticed.

Not the message.

The pattern.

Rei met her gaze briefly.

Then looked away.

Because acknowledgment—

Could be interpreted.

And interpretation—

Could be exploited.

Lunch brought movement.

Shifts in alliances.

Temporary groupings.

Rei didn't go to the cafeteria.

Not immediately.

Instead—

She changed direction.

Toward the secondary corridor.

Less populated.

More controlled.

Because if someone wanted privacy—

They would choose isolation.

And if they chose isolation—

They could be found.

She turned the corner.

And stopped.

Because she wasn't alone.

Ichinose stood near the window.

Light behind her.

Positioning intentional.

"…You came," Ichinose said.

Rei didn't move closer.

"…You expected me to."

Ichinose smiled.

"…Eventually."

A pause.

"…You've been busy," she continued.

"…Reorganizing your class."

Not a question.

Rei's expression didn't change.

"…Observation is easy."

Ichinose stepped forward slightly.

Closing distance.

Not aggressively.

Strategically.

"…Understanding is harder."

Rei tilted her head.

"…Is this where you ask?"

Ichinose laughed softly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…This is where I offer."

That—

Was new.

Rei remained still.

"…An alliance," Ichinose said.

The word hung between them.

Not dramatic.

But significant.

"…Temporary," she added.

"…Mutually beneficial."

Rei studied her.

Not her expression.

Her posture.

Her breathing.

Her timing.

Because sincerity—

Could be performed.

"…Define benefit," Rei said.

Ichinose didn't hesitate.

"…Information."

A pause.

"…Access."

Another pause.

"…And protection."

Protection.

Rei's eyes sharpened slightly.

"…From what?"

Ichinose's smile faded.

Just slightly.

"…From attention."

Silence.

Because that—

Was accurate.

Attention—

Was no longer neutral.

It was pressure.

And pressure—

Could break systems.

Rei stepped closer.

Not fully.

Just enough.

"…Why me?"

Ichinose met her gaze.

Fully.

"…Because you're not playing the same game."

Truth.

Not complete.

But real.

"…And because," Ichinose added quietly, "…others have already started."

That—

Was the critical piece.

Rei didn't respond immediately.

Because this—

Changed timing.

Not the outcome.

But the order of events.

"…Who?" Rei asked.

Ichinose shook her head.

"…Not yet."

A pause.

"…That's part of the exchange."

Of course.

Nothing—

Was free.

Rei turned slightly.

Looked out the window.

Students moved below.

Unaware.

But the system—

Had shifted.

Because alliances—

Created new variables.

And variables—

Created instability.

She turned back.

"…I'll consider it," she said.

Not acceptance.

Not rejection.

Control.

Ichinose nodded.

"…I expected that."

A pause.

"…Don't take too long."

Not a threat.

But not neutral.

Rei left first.

Because ending the interaction—

Was part of control.

The hallway felt tighter on the way back.

Because now—

She knew.

Someone else—

Had moved.

And this—

Was only the beginning.

Inside the classroom—

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Which meant—

It wasn't.

Rei returned to her seat.

Sat.

And began recalculating.

Because the game—

Had expanded.

And this time—

She wasn't the only one manipulating it.
