Chapter 45 - Retribution Pt.12

Solaris stared off into the distance for a while after the death of the two devils. His breathing was both deep and ragged, his body hurt, his right shoulder was still bleeding, and he was about to lose the majority use of his left arm.

Once he was out of Nova, he would lose access to Harden, and without Harden, Solaris was in the dark about how to reset Bone.

"Fu...ck..."

Solaris uttered a stuttered curse as he witnessed the worst thing that could happen.

Off in the distance, the Scavangers, the gluttony demons, had just returned.

His right eye twitched as a tear streamed down it. He was so tired, so sore, and so done.

"Fine... I'll finish what I started."

Solaris took a deep breath, straightened his body, and opened his mouth

"BRING IT ON!!!! ALL FORTY OF YOU, SEE IF YOU CAN KILL A SUN!!!"

Solaris had debated for a moment, calling himself 'eclipse,' yet decided it would be too corny.

Gritting his teeth, Solaris readied himself for the incoming assault.

The Glutteny demons were still in a formation akin to a bird, yet in four groups of ten, in the front of the group, Solaris could make out a very familiar face.

His scowl deepened at the sight of the bird, the demon that had so kindly greeted him to this world.

"That devil."

Solaris popped his knuckles and willed the shards to form an orbit around him.

Wherever they came from, he was going to have to be ready. Forty demons was already going to be difficult, yet on top of it, he was already injured and in a deficit of Nova, his main weapon for the past few days, was now destroyed, and he had to fight yet another strong demon.

He had barely survived the last battle by sheer luck and a little bit of time, and now he was forced into another bloody battle, yet this time the threat was multiplied.

Solaris felt his heat die down for a moment and his hardened skin lose some of its strength. This feeling caused Solaris to quickly widen his eyes.

Fuck, I really need a weapon.

As the threat grew closer, the realization of his lack of Nova truly hit him.

Quickly, he looked over at the large warhammer. Wasting no time, he sprinted over to the hammer and attempted to lift it.

Solaris tried, yet it was in vain; the hammer was too heavy.

"How did I survive being hit by this?!"

His vision once again shifted to the last remaining javelins, the one he'd knocked away and the one that the sloth dropped before his shards tore its internals apart.

Those will have to do.

He sprinted over to the first one, picked it up, and repeated for the second. Solaris quickly moved half of his shards onto one of the spears and the other half onto the other, creating two spears, both with incredibly hot and sharp tips.

"CAW...CAW!"

In the distance, Solaris could hear many sounds akin to different animals, yet the loudest was that danmed bird.

Its mighty caws seemed to eradicate the other demons' sounds.

Solaris gritted his teeth more now that the once-silent bird finally spoke.

The first battalion of demons descended in a rapid motion, all of them folding their wings in and dived, yet as they grew closer, all of them ignored Solaris, and instead grabbed the two dead demons, and carried them away.

After a moment, the second descended, this time they flew into the quarters and grabbed the dead demons, dragging them out.

After the first had descended, Solaris was shocked, yet by the time the second moved hed already formulated his plan.

As a demon emerged holding a dead sloth, one that had been very fat, Solaris was already waiting, both his arms surged both forwards and with an incandescent light, piercing the skin of the demon, grabbing its crystals and crushing them all in one motion. Removing his arms, the light under his arms flickered and then dimmed, and his coating seemed to lose some of its incredible darkness.

Looking away from his arms, he thought.

Scavangers. Why didn't I think of that before? It was literally the word I chose.

Solaris mentally face-palmed as his arms killed another few demons.

Within moments, the second battalion had been killed, and the third was on its way.

Solaris felt his mind slipping as he guarded the corpses; his exhaustion was getting to him, and everything had begun to feel less and less real.

"Please... Take over..... if I pass out...."

Solaris whispered almost inaudibly; it was a desperate plea, and one hed hoped he would never have to say aloud.

Taking a breath to reignite his vision, he once again readied himself and continued the slaughter.

His fist and his improvised spears danced through the starving scavengers. The demons were not fighting him; they simply attempted to grab and leave, yet Solaris refused to allow it.

As minutes passed, so did many demons' lives. The first battalion returned and died at the hands of Solaris, the third died at the hands of Solaris, and now it was time for the fourth and final battalion.

As well as the beaked Devil.

If I can do this, I can save Ember.

If I can do this, I can save Ember.

If I can do this, I can save Ember!

Solaris repeated this thought over and over as the first demons closed in on him. He gripped the first spear, raised it, and threw it with terrible speed.

The white bone blured though the air as it collided with one of the descending demons, the shards that lined the front angled into a triangular formation, and the spear passed through the direct middle of the demon, bisecting it and killing it.

Without wasting even a second, Solaris aimed the second spear and threw it, with the shards amplifying the weapon; its speed was simply astonishing, and its destructive capabilities were supreme.

I can do it, I can kill them!

"Come on, bird, let's finish this"

As the last demon approached from the sky, his spears already carving through the others, Solaris watched the beaked devil, slowly float to the ground, yet it didn't carry a weapon, and instead simply opened its beak, its teeth filled beak.

It shouted a single word, a word Solaris had feared hearing, ever since the first time he had heard it, a word, or rather a name.

"MALITH!"

Solaris watched as a golden chain shot over to him. With no time to wait, he recalled all of the shards under his skin and accepted his fate.

His exhausted face curled into a dastardly grin.

It's time, are you ready, Malith, to face the full force of a sun?
