Chapter 57 - chapter 57: The Silent Ambush

The mist swallowed us, twisting and turning with every step. My heart raced, not just from the fight but from the lingering warmth of Kaiden's touch—the way his hand had brushed mine during the last surge of energy. That fleeting contact left a heat that refused to fade.

"Stay focused," Lucien muttered, eyes sharp, scanning the shadows. "They won't wait. Ambushes… silent, precise, and deadly."

I swallowed hard, gripping my mark. It pulsed in rhythm with my heartbeat, a warning and a promise all at once. The forest seemed alive, every leaf, every twig whispering threats we couldn't yet see.

Kaiden moved like a shadow beside me, silent, controlled. His presence was both a shield and a spark, and I couldn't help but notice the tension coiling between us—unspoken, dangerous, and… intoxicating.

A sudden rustle to our left made me spin, energy flaring instinctively. Two figures dropped from the trees with lethal precision, moving faster than any wolf I had ever seen. My pulse spiked; this was no ordinary attack.

Kaiden's gray eyes narrowed. "They're professionals," he growled. "Move!"

We leapt into action. I fired bursts of energy from my mark, arcs of light snapping through the mist, while Kaiden struck with controlled ferocity, each move precise and calculated. Wolves fell, colliding with trees, but more emerged from the shadows, surrounding us.

Lucien's wards ignited, creating a glowing barrier. "They've adapted! Every strike you make teaches them how to counter!"

I bit my lip, frustration mixing with adrenaline. "Then we'll make them learn faster!" My mark flared again, sending a shockwave that rattled the surrounding trees. Wolves screamed as the ground shook beneath us.

Kaiden's hand found mine, gripping it firmly. "Careful!" His voice was sharp, but there was something else—concern, maybe even a trace of… desire? My pulse skipped.

I met his gaze, breath uneven. "I'm not afraid."

His jaw tightened. "You should be. But that doesn't mean I'll let you face it alone."

The shadow figure from before appeared, stepping through the fog as if drawn by the chaos. Its red eyes glowed in the dim light. "Impressive. But no matter how strong you grow, little Luna… you're still mine to claim."

Kaiden's energy flared around us, intertwining with mine in a protective surge. "Not today," he growled.

The figure chuckled, voice echoing like a knife through the trees. "We'll see."

Suddenly, a sharp whistle split the air—a signal. From all directions, dozens more predators emerged, encircling us completely. I felt my mark pulse, hotter and faster, warning me of the impending attack.

Lucien's voice cut through my panic. "They've trapped us. Now what?"

Kaiden's hand tightened around mine. "Then we break out together," he said, his eyes blazing with power and something else—an unspoken promise I could feel in my chest.

I nodded, energy surging uncontrollably. "Together," I breathed.

And then, with a roar of combined power, we surged forward, breaking the circle.

The predators screamed… and the fog itself seemed to shift against us.

But from the shadows, a new presence stirred—far stronger than anything we had faced so far.

And I knew, deep down, the real hunt had just begun.
