Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: The Anatomy of a Saint

Following the emotional triage at the civilian orphanage, Kei seamlessly integrated back into his routine. He maintained the facade of a peaceful, dedicated civilian physician, efficiently running his newly expanded clinic while quietly accelerating his physical conditioning in the subterranean laboratory.

Yet, beneath the tranquil surface, his mind was relentlessly calculating. He was waiting for the Main House's intelligence network to deliver a very specific target: Shinno.

Despite his hyper-evolved empathic web granting him a 360-degree awareness of his surroundings, the absolute absence of visual light was a constant, suffocating reality. Only by living in this permanent darkness could one truly comprehend the agonizing vulnerability it inflicted. Kei had absolutely no intention of remaining in the dark forever.

Days bled into a week. Just as Kei began to calculate the probability of the tracker divisions failing entirely, Haru stepped into his private office, her chakra signature sharp and urgent.

"The perimeter scouts have isolated a trail," Haru reported, her voice low. "They have confirmed recent sightings of Shinno operating in the northern quadrant. The Great Elder intends to dispatch a specialized Hyuga retrieval squad to escort you."

Kei shook his head immediately, rejecting the tactical oversight. "No. Inform the Great Elder that I will formally request Lord Hokage to assign Captain Kakashi as my primary escort. Once Lord Third understands the benefits of the inclusion for the captain, he will not allow the Main House to interfere."

Kei had zero intention of allowing Taihiro's loyalists to witness him acquiring an S-rank dark medical ninjutsu.

Haru offered a crisp nod and vanished to deliver the heavily curated message.

Kei retrieved his cane and navigated to Kakashi's apartment. Together, they proceeded to the Hokage Tower. As Kei had flawlessly predicted, when he framed the high-clearance tracking mission as a necessary "change of scenery" to further stabilize Kakashi's PTSD, Hiruzen Sarutobi eagerly authorized the deployment.

Because Shinno's projected trajectory placed him near the borders of the Land of Fire, the journey required three days of grueling, high-speed travel.

On the afternoon of the third day, the dense forest finally gave way to a remote, impoverished civilian settlement. According to the Hyuga intelligence reports, the legendary rogue physician had established a temporary clinic here several weeks prior.

Walking along the muddy, rutted road leading into the village, Kakashi broke the silence.

"I remember Shinno passing through Konoha several years ago," Kakashi noted, his visible eye scanning the treeline. "He only remained within the walls for a brief period before resuming his travels. His medical proficiency was highly regarded, and he possessed a fanatic dedication to healing the impoverished."

"For a man possessing that caliber of philanthropy, if you simply approached him and requested an ocular consultation, he would likely offer his services freely. Why are we treating this as a black-ops surveillance mission?"

Kei did not answer the question directly. Instead, he posed a diagnostic counter. "Have you not analyzed his operational footprint, Kakashi? Shinno has been deliberately, systematically masking his exit vectors."

"You suspect a traveling civilian doctor is involved in espionage?" Kakashi frowned beneath his mask. "He operates alone in highly volatile, bandit-heavy territories. It is standard survival protocol to conceal one's tracks."

"If his primary objective is merely physical security, why does he aggressively broadcast his real name and legendary reputation the moment he enters a new settlement?" Kei asked, his tone laced with clinical mockery. "Do you not find the juxtaposition of a man desperate for fame, yet terrified of being followed, highly contradictory?"

Kakashi shook his head. "To brand a renowned humanitarian as a threat based on a minor inconsistency is incredibly cynical."

"You are correct; the data is currently circumstantial," Kei smiled, the corners of his mouth lifting into a familiar, dangerous curve. "Since our thoughts are in conflict... why don't we establish a wager?"

Kakashi's single eye narrowed. He knew the doctor's wagers were never simple.

"You will wager that Shinno is the benevolent, selfless saint his reputation claims him to be," Kei proposed. "I will wager that his immaculate philanthropy is nothing but a meticulously crafted psychological disguise."

Kakashi stopped walking. He stared at the blind man. "You have never even been in the same room as the man, yet you have already diagnosed him as a monster. Do you honestly believe your 'psychology' grants you a god-like ability to profile a target from a hundred miles away?"

"Are you accepting the wager, Captain, or are you avoiding the diagnostic?" Kei challenged.

Kakashi hesitated. He had thoroughly reviewed the ANBU dossiers on Shinno before they departed. The documentation was flawless. The man had spent decades crossing active war zones to heal the sick, refusing payment from the destitute. A man with that operational history could not possibly be a monster.

Having had his own worldview ruthlessly dismantled by the doctor multiple times, Kakashi felt a sudden, stubborn urge to prove Kei's cynical worldview wrong. He wanted to win.

"What are the stakes?" Kakashi asked.

"If evidence proves your theory correct, I will permanently cease all unsolicited psychiatric evaluations of your ideology," Kei offered.

"And if you win?"

Kei tilted his head. "If I win, you owe me one absolute, unquestioned favor in the future."

Kakashi calculated the risk for a fraction of a second, then gritted his teeth and gave a sharp nod. He was entirely confident in the ANBU intelligence.

Kei's smile deepened into profound satisfaction. He absolutely adored it when lethal operatives owed him a debt. A favor from Hatake Kakashi was a blank check of violence he fully intended to cash.

With the trap successfully set, the two shinobi resumed their pace, stepping into the center of the remote village.

Sensing a cluster of elderly civilians gathered near the central well, Kei adjusted his posture, adopting a harmless, civilian demeanor. "Let us conduct a baseline interview, Kakashi. We shall see how the local demographic perceives our saint."

"You are going to lose," Kakashi murmured quietly as they approached. "A reputation of this magnitude cannot be entirely fabricated."

"A man's true nature is never defined by his public relations, Kakashi," Kei replied without breaking his stride. "When analyzing a target, we must never allow the prevailing narrative to blind us to the subtext. Many men perform flawless acts of charity. But who can truly perceive the dark, festering hunger beneath the smile?"

"Just like a Hidden Village," Kei added softly. "Seemingly radiant and prosperous on the surface, yet fueled by a foundation of rotting bones."

Kakashi's jaw tightened at the brutal reminder of the orphanage, but he forced his tone to remain professional. "I am here exclusively as your bodyguard today, Kei. Not your patient."

Kei chuckled softly, entirely unfazed by the defensive wall. He approached the elders, politely explaining that he was a fellow physician seeking Shinno's legendary expertise for his blindness.

The moment Shinno's name was mentioned, the villagers' faces lit up with absolute reverence. They eagerly tripped over each other to sing the man's praises.

"Doctor Shinno is a living saint! He arrived when the fever broke out and treated half the village without asking for a single ryo!"

"His medical jutsu is a miracle from the Sage. He cured my crippling arthritis in a matter of hours!"

"He is so gentle and patient. He stayed awake for three days straight just to ensure the children broke their fevers..."

Every single testimony was a glowing, unblemished endorsement. There was not a single negative variable in the data.

Kei did not attempt to interrogate or refute their claims. He simply expressed his profound admiration, politely requested the exact geographic vector Shinno had taken when he departed, and asked if the doctor had accidentally left any physical belongings behind. An elder happily handed over a discarded, empty herbal medicine pouch.

With the physical evidence secured, Kei tapped his cane and led Kakashi back out of the village limits.

As the treeline swallowed them once more, Kakashi let out a quiet sigh of vindication. "Do you see? Unanimous praise from an entire settlement. It appears you are going to lose your wager."

Kei shrugged effortlessly, tossing the small, canvas medicine pouch into the air and catching it. A familiar, unnerving smile played on his lips. "In Konoha, the general populace also universally agrees that I am a kind, benevolent doctor. Why do you look at me like I am a demon, Kakashi?"

Kakashi frowned. "That is an entirely different matter."

"How is it different?" Kei tilted his head, his dead eyes 'locking' onto the ANBU. "Shinno treats impoverished villagers for free. Do I not provide identical, pro-bono psychiatric care to the orphans?"

"Shinno's actions receive unanimous, tearful praise from the civilians. Do I not receive the absolute affection and trust of those children?"

"You personally witnessed my charity at the orphanage," Kei stepped closer, his voice dropping to a surgical whisper. "You held the clay figurine they sculpted for me. Yet, despite witnessing my 'sainthood' with your own eye... you still harbor a deep, paranoid terror of me."

Kei reached out, lightly patting the tense muscle of Kakashi's shoulder. "Tell me, Kakashi. Why do you doubt my benevolence so completely?"

"Is my logic flawed? Or have you simply forgotten the reality of those children?"

Kakashi shook his head, taking a half-step back to break the physical contact. "It is not that. It is just that... the clinical ideologies you espouse are too..."

Before Kakashi could find the correct diplomatic term, Kei supplied the answer. "Too radical? Too violently opposed to your indoctrination?"

Kakashi fell into a heavy silence, unable to formulate a defense that didn't sound hypocritical.

Kei tossed the discarded medicine pouch to the captain. Kakashi caught it reflexively.

"I will offer you a rare piece of absolute truth, Kakashi," Kei said, his smile vanishing, replaced by a mask of cold, terrifying clarity. "I will never claim to be a 'good' man. I will never claim to be a savior. Because I am neither of those things."

"But I am infinitely more real than the hypocrites who spout grand, poetic ideals of peace while secretly feeding children to the slaughterhouse."

Kakashi stared at the canvas pouch in his hands, the weight of the doctor's words settling heavily into his chest. Without another word, he bit his thumb, drew blood, and slammed his palm against the dirt to initiate the Summoning Jutsu.

A puff of white smoke cleared, revealing the small, unimpressed form of Pakkun.
