The final bell rang across Crown Meridian Academy.
Students flooded the hallways, laughter echoing against the lockers. Adrian slung his bag over his shoulder as Tyler walked beside him, spinning a basketball on his finger.
"Training tomorrow morning," Tyler said. "Coach Ramirez said no excuses."
Adrian groaned. "He says that every day."
Tyler grinned. "Yeah… and you still show up."
Outside the school gates, the evening sun painted the city gold. Cars rolled past slowly, and the air smelled like street food and summer rain.
Then Adrian noticed her.
Valentina Rousseau stood near the sidewalk, scrolling through her phone. Her dark hair moved softly in the breeze.
Tyler immediately nudged him.
"Go talk to her."
"I talk to her all the time."
"Not like that."
Before Adrian could answer, Valentina looked up.
"Oh… hey Adrian."
Her smile was soft but genuine.
Adrian felt his chest tighten slightly.
"Hey."
Tyler suddenly stepped back. "I just remembered I have… something to do."
Adrian glared at him.
Tyler gave him a thumbs-up and walked away laughing.
Valentina tilted her head. "Was he always this weird?"
"Since birth."
She laughed.
For a moment they simply stood there, the city moving around them.
"Are you busy tonight?" Valentina asked.
Adrian blinked.
"No… why?"
"There's a night market downtown. I was thinking of going… but I didn't want to go alone."
Adrian tried to sound calm.
"Sure. Sounds fun."
Her smile widened slightly.
"Good. Meet me at seven."
When Adrian reached home, the house was already alive with noise.
The front door barely opened before Elena jumped onto him.
"ADRIAAAN!"
He nearly fell backward.
"Elena, get off!"
His little sister clung to him like a backpack.
"You promised you'd help me with homework!"
From the living room, Lucas laughed.
"Looks like you're trapped."
Lucas sat on the couch, flipping through TV channels.
"You're supposed to be the responsible older brother," Adrian said.
Lucas smirked. "That job was reassigned."
From the kitchen came another voice.
"Adrian, wash your hands before touching anything."
Camila Montiero stepped out holding a wooden spoon like a weapon.
She studied Adrian's face carefully.
"Why are you smiling like that?"
"I'm not smiling."
"You are."
Lucas leaned forward immediately.
"Oh this is good."
Camila crossed her arms.
"Who is she?"
Adrian froze.
"There's no 'she'."
Lucas burst out laughing.
"Elena, come here. Your brother has a crush."
Elena gasped dramatically.
"REALLY?"
Adrian ran a hand through his hair.
"You guys are impossible."
Camila walked closer, narrowing her eyes.
"Name."
"…Valentina."
The room went silent for half a second.
Lucas whistled.
"Oh that's a classy name."
Elena jumped excitedly.
"Are you going on a date?!"
"It's not a date!"
Camila smiled slightly.
"It's a date."
By evening, the city lights were glowing.
Adrian waited near the market entrance.
Music drifted through the air. Lanterns hung above colorful stalls selling food, clothes, and souvenirs.
Then Valentina appeared.
She wore a simple black jacket and jeans, but somehow the lights made her look… different.
Brighter.
Adrian blinked.
"You're late," she said teasingly.
"I've been here five minutes."
"That's late."
They walked through the market together.
Food stalls sizzled with grilled meat.
Elena would have loved this place.
Valentina stopped at a clothing stand.
"You should try that jacket."
Adrian looked at the price tag.
"Absolutely not."
She laughed and grabbed it anyway.
"Just try it."
After a minute of arguing, he finally put it on.
Valentina stepped back and looked at him.
"…Yeah. That looks good."
Adrian felt strangely embarrassed.
"You're just trying to make me spend money."
"Maybe."
They continued walking.
At one point Valentina bought two drinks and handed him one.
For a moment they stood quietly watching the crowd.
Then she said softly,
"You were amazing in the match today."
Adrian looked surprised.
"You watched?"
"Of course."
She looked straight at him.
"You're going to become something big, Adrian."
For the first time all day… he didn't know what to say.
The night market lights reflected in her eyes.
And for a moment, the world felt strangely calm.
Far away, his phone buzzed.
A message from Tyler.
Training tomorrow. 6 AM. Coach Ramirez will kill us if we're late.
Adrian sighed.
Valentina smiled.
"Soccer life?"
"Soccer life."
They laughed together as the night lights shimmered above the city.
