Chapter 17 - "Escaping shadows"

'The Shadow House'

Chapter 17 – Escaping ShadowsArjun and Maya left the first node at dawn, their bodies exhausted but minds racing. Destroying the northern manor had been successful, but it left them with a chilling realization: the Shadow House network was far more dangerous than they imagined.

"They're spreading," Maya said, her voice low as they drove through the fog-laden forest roads. "Some of the shadows didn't vanish. They left…"

Arjun clenched his fists. "Yes. Remnants. Pieces of fear. They can escape nodes, drift, infect people or places. They're not bound to a building—they follow wherever fear exists."

Maya swallowed hard. "So towns could be haunted… and we wouldn't even know?"

Arjun shook his head grimly. "Exactly. The first node was just a fraction of the network. If we don't stop the others, this could become unstoppable."

Hours later, they reached a village in central India. Reports in the journal indicated another node nearby, a decaying estate once belonging to a wealthy merchant centuries ago. Locals whispered about disappearances, strange lights, and shadows that moved independently.

From the moment they entered the village, the atmosphere was thick with unease. Children hid inside, adults avoided eye contact, and even the wind seemed to carry whispers.

As night fell, the first signs appeared. Shadows moved unnaturally along the walls, sliding like liquid, gathering in corners. Eyes seemed to follow them from the darkness, and faint whispers threaded through the air:

"We move beyond the house… you cannot stop us… you cannot hide…"

Maya clutched Arjun's arm. "They're here. Not from the house itself, but… from it."

"Yes," Arjun said, his voice steady despite the fear. "Some of the shadows escaped the northern node. They've spread into the village. We need to act fast."

The estate loomed ahead—its gates hanging from rusted hinges, walls streaked with black, windows shattered. Unlike the previous node, this one felt more alive, as if the shadows inside had grown clever, waiting for them.

Inside, the air was heavy with darkness. Shadows darted across the cracked floors and ceilings, whispering secrets of past victims. The walls were covered in mirrors—some shattered, some intact, each reflecting fragments of fear: people screaming, shadows reaching, twisted faces staring back at them.

Arjun held the key high. Its faint glow pushed the nearest shadows away, but some recoiled only slightly before slinking into hidden corners.

"This node is different," Arjun whispered. "The shadows here… they're independent. They can act on their own. They don't wait for the house—they hunt."

Maya's eyes widened as a shadow detached from the wall, forming a humanoid figure with hollow, black eyes. It lunged at them, faster than anything they had encountered before.

Arjun swung the key, and a pulse of light struck the shadow. It screamed, dissolving into smoke—but two others immediately appeared, circling them.

"They're learning," Maya said. "They adapt, they're not just following—they're hunting."

Arjun nodded. "Then we need to sever the node, like before. Fast."

They located the pedestal in the basement, cracked and etched with symbols identical to those in Devgarh and the northern manor. Around it, shadows gathered, hissing, clawing at their minds with whispers of fear and despair.

Arjun took a deep breath. "We can't let them escape. Not here. Not anywhere else."

Maya grasped his hand. "Then let's finish this."

Together, they recited the incantation from the journal, focusing on the node, its connection to the network, and the escaped shadows. The key pulsed, brightening, sending ripples of light through the basement.

Shadows screamed, twisting violently, some clawing at walls, others dissolving into smoke. The mirrors shattered, revealing glimpses of trapped souls, screaming silently.

A final pulse of light shot from the key, enveloping the pedestal. The shadows shrieked, writhing, then evaporated completely. The basement fell silent.

Arjun and Maya staggered to the surface, gasping. The village outside felt lighter, calmer. The node had been destroyed.

But as they looked to the horizon, Arjun noticed faint black wisps drifting through the forest. Shadows that had escaped… free, spreading, patient.

"We may have destroyed the node," he said grimly, "but some of them got away. The network is bigger than we thought, and it's already adapting."

Maya shivered. "Then it's not just nodes we're fighting… it's the shadows themselves."

Arjun nodded. "And they're faster than we are. They're learning. Waiting. Hunting. This… is far from over."

The night sky above the village was still, but the forest seemed alive with eyes. Shadows moved, patient and silent, waiting for fear to take root so they could return.

And Arjun knew that their fight had only just begun.
