The car didn't stop immediately.
It kept moving long after the city faded into something quieter, emptier, darker. Streetlights became fewer. Buildings turned into shadows. The road stretched out like it had no end, and for the first time since she made her decision
Camille felt it.
Not regret.
But the weight of it.
There was no turning back from this.
No sudden escape.
No undoing the moment she stepped into that car.
She leaned her head slightly against the window, watching the reflections blur past, her thoughts moving just as fast.
Her father.
Everything always came back to him.
The secrets.
The system.
The reason she was here.
"You're quiet," the man said from across her.
Camille didn't look at him. "I'm thinking."
"Good," he replied. "You'll need that."
She let out a faint breath. "You say things like that like it's supposed to comfort me."
"It's not," he said simply.
At least he was consistent.
The car finally slowed.
Turned.
