Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Godfrey's Visit

"I'm starting to miss the taste of Lobster-bro..."

Mohg looked up at the "sky" with a sentimental sigh, then bit into the black cake in his hand with a look of tragic indignation. He hadn't expected that even after moving to a better area, he still couldn't escape the fate of eating these black crackers. The only difference was that the ones here were larger.

"Until we find a way to deal with that giant one, don't even think about going down there," Morgott said, shaking his head. He wanted Mohg to stop daydreaming.

"What if... what if we trick one of the adult Omens into going down to take care of it? Wouldn't that solve the problem?" Mohg rubbed his chin, casting a glance toward an adult Omen lying nearby.

Morgott froze. He looked at the resting Omen and fell into deep thought.

Actually... that might just work. The giant lobster wasn't truly world-ending yet; given the strength of an adult Omen, taking it down shouldn't be an issue.

"Well? Any ideas on how to do it?"

"I think it's doable, but how do we lure an Omen down there?" Morgott threw the question back at Mohg.

Mohg scratched his head. That was indeed a problem. The Omens in this sector had a steady supply of food and weren't threatened by the feral ones from the lower levels.

Wait, isn't this supposed to be an exile? Why does it feel more like a nursery? Did they put us in the wrong spot?

"Mhm... I guess there's no way for now..." Mohg clicked his tongue in dissatisfaction. These Omens were far too content with their lot. He couldn't do anything with a group so lacking in ambition; he'd just have to take it one step at a time.

"Then just stay put and be good..." Morgott went back to his spot, having no better ideas himself.

Whish— BOOM!

A thunderous crash echoed through the chamber as something heavy slammed into the ground. The sleeping Omens were jolted awake, looking around with furious eyes to find the culprit behind the disturbance.

Soon, a towering figure appeared in their line of sight.

"ROAR!"

Two massive adult Omens lunged toward the intruder with a collective bellow. Facing the assault of two full-grown Omens, the man simply let out a sharp grin and reached out.

His corded, muscular arms clamped firmly onto the horns of both Omens.

"Hah!"

With a guttural shout, explosive power erupted from his frame. The two massive Omens were hoisted into the air by their horns.

CRASH!!

As the two Omens were slammed ruthlessly into the stone floor, Mohg and Morgott winced in unison, reflexively shrinking back.

That had to hurt...

"Who do you think this one is?" Mohg whispered to Morgott.

Before Morgott could answer, the towering figure walked slowly toward them and extended a massive hand. As the brothers looked at the familiar face, their eyes went blank with shock.

It was the first King of the Golden Dynasty. The First Elden Lord... Godfrey.

"My sons, come with me."

Mohg watched with a dazed expression as Godfrey, stripped to the waist, waded through the murky sewer river. He truly hadn't expected the King to visit them like this—no disguise, no pretense, just walking straight into the filth. Though, Mohg figured someone would be assigned to handle the "clean-up" of the witnesses. He wondered which poor soul was currently stuck with that paperwork.

"Haha!"

A sudden, boisterous laugh snapped Mohg out of his thoughts. He looked toward the river.

Godfrey was holding the very Lobster-bro that had been hunting them, hoisting it high into the air with an excited grin. The lobster, naturally, wasn't going down without a fight. After a few desperate struggles proved it couldn't break the King's grip, it began to charge a shot in its mouth.

Morgott's face paled. "Father, watch out!"

"Hmm?" Godfrey turned his head toward Morgott, as if asking what he should be careful of.

Pshoo— THUD!

A split second later, the lobster's high-pressure water jet slammed directly into Godfrey's forehead. Morgott watched with bated breath, his heart in his throat.

Shake, shake—

Godfrey shook his head vigorously, spray flying from his hair, and glared at the lobster in his hands.

"How rude, spitting on people."

Crack— Snap!

With a steady application of force, Godfrey tore the lobster's head clean off. Morgott silently swallowed the rest of his warning and walked over to where Mohg was already starting a fire.

Godfrey dragged the lobster carcass over to the two boys.

"Phew... I suppose this is the first time we've spoken like this, isn't it?" Godfrey asked, leaning against the wall as he dropped the lobster.

Mohg and Morgott exchanged a glance and nodded.

"What do you two think about your future?" Godfrey asked with a wide grin, running a hand through his short hair.

Mohg didn't answer immediately. He went over to the lobster and began prepping it over the fire. Godfrey didn't mind his younger son's silence, turning his gaze instead toward Morgott, who looked like he had something to say.

"I... we are sinners of the Golden Dynasty. But I love this place. I crave the radiance of the Erdtree, and I want to protect it. I believe... that is my mission."

Morgott spoke his heart, his voice steady. Godfrey raised an eyebrow. He didn't offer a critique, though he was inwardly surprised that his son had made such a resolute decision at such a young age.

"And you, Mohg?"

"Me?" Mohg blinked and pointed at himself. After a moment of silence, he spoke his mind. "I don't know."

"You don't know?" Godfrey blinked.

"No. I don't know what I want to do in the future yet. But... I want power. I want to obtain even greater strength. A power that is unconstrained."

Mohg nodded. As he said, he had only recently arrived in this world; he didn't feel a deep sense of belonging, and thus didn't share his brother's fanatical empathy for the Dynasty. So far, he had only one goal: to become strong. Whether it was the power of the Crucible, the Erdtree, or the Formless Mother—if it made him strong enough to avoid being a pawn, especially for that "femboy" who would eventually come for his body, then he wanted it!

Yes, he still remembered the "brat" who would be born in the future.

Godfrey's eyes lit up at the answer. His grin widened, and he let out a thunderous, joyous laugh.

"Hahahaha! Good! A fine goal!"

As he spoke, Godfrey raised a hand like a palm leaf and delivered a massive slap to Mohg's back.

"Cough! Cough!"

The impact nearly sent Mohg's soul flying out of his mouth. That single pat almost knocked the wind out of him entirely.
