Chapter 26 - The Scout’s Curiosity

Morning sunlight stretched across the outer districts of Ujjaini, bringing the market streets back to life.

Merchants raised colorful cloth shades above their stalls, farmers pushed carts filled with grain and vegetables, and the aroma of fresh bread drifted from small bakeries along the road.

To the citizens of the district, it was simply another busy morning.

But high above the street—

Someone was still watching.

The Patient Observer

On the rooftop of a tall storage building, Kiran, the Rakshak scout, crouched behind a clay chimney.

From this position he had a perfect view of the quiet house across the street.

The same house he had investigated the previous day.

The same house where the strange feeling had begun.

Kiran rested his elbows on the roof tiles and stared toward the window.

"…Still nothing."

The boy inside the house had woken up early that morning.

But his behavior had remained completely normal.

Reading.

Helping his mother.

Eating breakfast.

Nothing suspicious.

Still—

The feeling in Kiran's chest refused to fade.

Rakshak training had taught him something important.

When instincts warned of danger—

Ignoring them was a mistake.

Inside Aarav's Mind

Aarav sat near the table eating a small bowl of rice porridge.

Across from him, his mother prepared vegetables for the day's meals.

Everything appeared perfectly ordinary.

But inside the boy's mind—

Arivaan watched carefully.

The faint system interface hovered beside his thoughts.

Subconscious Observation – Active

Through the observation module, Arivaan could feel the emotional patterns of the surrounding area.

Merchants felt busy.

Children felt playful.

Guards felt bored.

And on the rooftop across the street—

A very familiar emotion burned quietly.

Suspicion.

Arivaan smiled faintly.

"…Persistent."

Aarav whispered internally.

"What?"

"The scout."

The boy froze.

"He's still watching us?!"

"Yes."

Aarav groaned.

"Why won't he leave?"

Arivaan leaned mentally against the system interface.

"Because he's doing his job."

The boy sighed.

"That's terrible."

The Curious Rakshak

Kiran continued watching the house.

After several minutes—

He climbed down from the rooftop.

Instead of leaving the district—

He walked casually through the market street again.

But this time—

His path led directly toward the house.

Inside Aarav's mind—

Arivaan noticed the movement immediately.

"…Interesting."

Aarav panicked.

"He's coming again!"

Arivaan stayed calm.

"Yes."

The boy nearly dropped his spoon.

"What do we do?!"

Arivaan considered the situation carefully.

The Rakshak scout had already questioned the family once.

Returning again would attract attention.

Which meant something important.

The man's suspicion had grown stronger.

Arivaan smiled faintly.

"…Good."

Aarav blinked.

"How is that good?!"

Arivaan answered simply.

"Because now we understand him."

A Different Approach

Outside the house—

Kiran stopped near the fruit seller's cart again.

But this time—

He didn't ask questions.

Instead he bought a small bundle of fruit.

Then slowly walked toward the nearby houses.

Eventually—

He reached Aarav's doorway again.

Kiran knocked gently.

Inside the house—

Aarav's mother opened the door.

"Oh, it's you again."

Kiran smiled politely.

"Sorry to disturb you."

The woman looked curious.

"Did you find the traveler you were looking for?"

Kiran shook his head.

"Not yet."

Then he glanced toward the interior of the house.

"Actually, I wanted to apologize."

The woman blinked.

"…Apologize?"

"Yes."

Kiran held up the fruit bundle.

"For bothering your family yesterday."

Inside Aarav's mind—

Arivaan chuckled quietly.

"…Clever."

Aarav frowned.

"What?"

"He's testing us."

The Subtle Trap

Kiran stepped slightly inside the doorway.

Not enough to seem rude.

But enough to see the interior of the house clearly.

His eyes immediately found Aarav.

The boy looked up from the table.

Kiran smiled kindly.

"You must be Aarav."

The boy nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Inside his mind—

Arivaan whispered calmly.

"Stay relaxed."

Aarav forced himself to obey.

Kiran crouched slightly to match the boy's height.

"You like reading?"

Aarav nodded.

"Yes."

"What kind of books?"

"…Stories."

Kiran smiled.

"That's good."

But while the conversation sounded friendly—

The Rakshak scout's eyes remained sharp.

Watching every movement.

Every reaction.

Every hesitation.

Arivaan observed the man's emotions carefully through the system module.

Curiosity.

Suspicion.

Focus.

Kiran was searching for something.

Anything.

But Aarav remained calm.

Normal.

Just a shy child speaking with a stranger.

After several moments—

Kiran finally stood again.

"Well," he said politely.

"Thank you for the conversation."

Aarav's mother smiled.

"You're welcome."

The scout stepped back outside.

Then he walked away down the street.

A Suspicion That Remains

Inside Aarav's mind—

The boy exhaled heavily.

"That was terrifying."

Arivaan nodded.

"Yes."

The system panel flickered softly.

System Recovery: 53%

Aarav frowned.

"Did he believe us?"

Arivaan looked toward the window again.

Kiran had already disappeared into the crowd.

"…Not completely."

The boy groaned.

"So he still suspects something?"

Arivaan smiled faintly.

"Yes."

Because Kiran's emotions had revealed something interesting.

The Rakshak scout was not convinced.

Not yet.

And curious hunters rarely gave up.

Which meant one thing.

The game between predator and prey had only just begun.
