Chapter 18: The Dawn of the Vultures

The night was not silent. Across the dark expanse of the ocean, the rhythmic sound of drums began to echo—the war drums of the Hidden Cloud.

Between the massive flagships of the Three-Nation Alliance, small, fast-moving rowboats darted through the waves. These were the messengers, carrying scrolls sealed with the wax of the Kages. In an era where trust was thin, these human links were the only thing holding the three predators together.

The Final Council of Envoys

On the deck of the Mist flagship, three high-ranking messengers met under the flickering light of an oil lantern.

"The Tsuchikage is tired of waiting," the messenger from the Hidden Rock said, slamming a heavy scroll onto the table. "Our catapult-barges are loaded with Earth-infused boulders. We strike at dawn, or he pulls his forces back. He will not waste iron on a 'haunted' ocean."

"The Raikage agrees," the Hidden Cloud envoy added. "Our sensory teams have mapped the 'pulses' of their barrier. It's strong, but it's rhythmic. If we hit the same point with the combined 'Triple Element' strike, the frequency will shatter."

The Hidden Mist envoy smirked, looking at the silent horizon. "And the Leaf? Any word from the border patrols?"

"Silence," the Cloud envoy replied. "The Konoha scouts withdrew three miles inland yesterday. The 'Will of Fire' has gone cold. The Uzumaki are truly alone."

The Burden of the Leader

Back on the island, Rimon felt the messengers departing through his Kagura-Haki net. The "Open Secret" was no longer a theory; it was a death sentence.

He walked through the village square, finding Kushina sitting on a supply crate. She was staring at the Great Gate, her small hands gripped tightly around a sealing brush.

"Kushina," Rimon said softly. "It's time. Take the younger ones and the students to the deepest sea-cavern. Stay behind the reinforced seals. Do not come out until I personally call for you."

Kushina stood up, her red hair swaying in the cold wind. She didn't look scared; she looked confused. She looked at Rimon—at his height, which was barely more than hers, and at his face, which was still soft with youth.

"Rimon-baka... what are you talking about?" she asked, her voice trembling. "You're thirteen. You're the same age as me. You're a 'seedling' too. If they want the children, they want you just as much as the rest of us. Why aren't you coming to the cavern?"

Rimon stopped. He looked at his hands, then back at the girl who had been his classmate in a world that felt like it existed a thousand years ago.

"I can't, Kushina," Rimon said, his voice dropping to a calm, steady tone that sounded far older than his years.

"Why?!" she hissed, stepping closer. "Because you're a genius? Because you built these machines? That doesn't make you an adult!"

Rimon looked up at the Hydro-Chakra Hub towering above them, then at the village elders who were currently looking to him for orders.

"In the history of our clan, the leader doesn't hide while the family bleeds," Rimon said quietly. "Ashina-sama is the Patriarch, but I am the one who gave the people this hope. If I hide in a cave, that hope dies before the first shell even hits the wall. A leader isn't defined by how many years he's lived, Kushina... but by how much weight he's willing to carry so others don't have to."

Kushina stared at him, her eyes shimmering. For the first time, she didn't see the "annoying genius" or the "bratty peer." She saw a boy who had traded his childhood for a crown of thorns.

"You're a moron," she whispered, wiping her eyes fiercely. "A total, self-sacrificing moron. If you die out here, I'll never forgive you."

"I have no intention of dying," Rimon said, giving her a small, tired smile. "I have too much work left to do. Now, go. Keep them safe. That is the only way I can focus on the fight."

The Red Horizon

Rimon watched her lead the group away. As the first faint line of red appeared on the eastern horizon, he climbed to the top of the Hub. The ocean was covered in white sails. Hundreds of ships. Thousands of men.

He reached into his pocket and touched the gold-edged coin, feeling its cold ridges.

"Not yet," he whispered. "First, we show them that the 'seedlings' of the Uzumaki have grown thorns."

He slammed his hand into the control panel, overriding the safety limiters. Below the earth, the heart of the island began to roar like a caged beast.

The blue dome of the barrier turned a blinding, white-hot silver. The sun broke the horizon, and the first war-horn of the Alliance screamed across the water.
