Chapter 72: The Forest's Shadow
The gates of the Hidden Leaf Village stood tall and imposing, yet to Ensho Nara and Nawaki, they felt strangely narrow. After two weeks of breathing the salt air of a sovereign nation, the towering trees of the Land of Fire felt less like a protective embrace and more like a wooden cage.
They were met not by a welcoming committee, but by a squad of ANBU who escorted them directly to the Hokage Tower. The atmosphere in Konoha was heavy; the casualty lists from the Rain front were being posted daily, and the mourning black of civilian clothing was becoming a common sight.
The Round Table of Shadows
In the Hokage's office, the air was thick with the scent of tobacco and old parchment. Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, sat behind his desk, his face looking ten years older than when they had left. Beside him stood the village elders, Koharu and Homura, and in the dim corner, half-shrouded in shadow, was Danzo Shimura.
Ensho Nara stepped forward and placed a thick, leather-bound scroll on the desk. It wasn't a standard mission report. It was a copy of the Code of the Whirlpool.
"The mission was a failure in its original parameters, Hokage-sama," Ensho began, his voice devoid of its usual laziness. "Uzushiogakure was not saved by Konoha. It was saved by itself—and a group of 'irregulars' the likes of which the world has never seen."
For the next two hours, the room was silent as Ensho and Tokuma detailed the events. The destruction of the Mist fleet, the appearance of the "Straw Hat" crew, the death of the Seven Swordsmen, and finally, the ascension of Uzumaki Rimon.
The Hokage's Burden
Hiruzen picked up the Code, flipping through the pages. His eyes widened as he read the Tiers of Citizenship and the Judiciary laws.
"Sovereignty?" Hiruzen whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "Rimon has declared Uzushio a neutral state? He knows this breaks the ancient treaties with the Land of Fire. The Daimyo will be... displeased."
"The Daimyo's displeasure is a luxury Uzushio can no longer afford, Hiruzen," Danzo's voice rasped from the shadows. He stepped into the light, his bandaged eye fixed on the report. "What you are describing is a rogue state. A child-king sitting on a pile of forbidden sealing scrolls and befriending pirates. This 'Rimon' has effectively kidnapped the Uzumaki bloodline."
"He didn't kidnap them, Danzo!" Nawaki burst out, unable to stay silent. "He gave them a reason to live! I saw it. I helped build the school. They aren't just a clan anymore—they're a people."
Danzo's gaze shifted to Nawaki, cold and calculating. "You helped build a fortress for a boy who refuses to answer to the Leaf, Senju. You were sent to bring them here, to safety. Instead, you've helped build a wall between us."
The Obsession of the Root
Hiruzen slammed his hand on the desk. "Enough! Nawaki, go to the hospital and see to your exhaustion. Ensho, Tokuma... leave the scrolls. I need to deliberate."
As the room cleared, only Hiruzen and Danzo remained.
"The Mist failed," Danzo said softly, his fingers twitching toward the hidden seals on his arm. "The Stone failed. But Uzushio is now a treasure chest without a lock. If these 'Straw Hats' are gone, as the report says, then the island is vulnerable."
"No, Danzo," Hiruzen said, looking out at the sunset over the Hokage Rock. "Ensho's report is clear. The island is not vulnerable. It is changing. If we move against them now, we lose the Uzumaki forever. Rimon has offered trade, not war. We will observe."
"Observation is the path of the weak," Danzo countered.
In his mind, Danzo was already calculating. He didn't care about the 'Flag of the Free' or the 'Code.' He saw the Vortex Engine, the Molecular Vibration Seals, and the potential of Kushina Uzumaki. To him, Uzushio wasn't a nation; it was a collection of weapons that Rimon had stolen from Konoha's grasp.
The Seed of Change
That night, in the Nara compound, Ensho sat with his clan's elders. He didn't talk about the battles. He talked about Saki, the Uzumaki banker, and Kajuro, the Stone judge.
"The Leaf is built on the Will of Fire," Ensho told his kinsmen. "But the Will of Fire burns out when the wood is gone. Uzushio... they've found a way to keep the fire burning without consuming the people. Keep an eye on the markets. If Rimon starts issuing 'Vortex Credits' as the report suggests, we shift our assets. The Nara do not go down with a sinking ship."
Across the village, in the Senju estate, Nawaki was feverishly writing a letter. His hands were still stained with the stone-dust of the Academy, a mark of honor he refused to wash off.
"Sis," he wrote, his pen flying across the paper. "You won't believe what's happening. The world we were told about? It's wrong. Rimon is building something real. I think... I think the Leaf is the one that's falling behind."
He sealed the letter with a special wax and handed it to a messenger hawk. The destination: The Rain Front. The "Infection of Freedom" had officially reached the heart of the Forest.
Konoha is aware. The tension between Hiruzen's caution and Danzo's greed has reached a boiling point. The letter is on its way to Tsunade.
