Chapter 7 - Chapter 5: The Fairy, The Princess, and The Forest

There is a difference, the forest knows, between someone who walks into it and someone who arrives.

The boy and the Garden Princess arrived.

They came through the treeline side by side and the forest felt it — the way a room feels when the person it was waiting for finally walks in. The light shifted slightly. The birds paused in their usual arguments and then resumed them at a slightly different pitch. The path ahead settled into itself, as though it had been patiently holding its shape all morning and was glad someone had finally come to use it.

The boy felt it through his left eye first — a warmth, a quality of attention, something recognising him and being glad about it.

"There. Do you feel that?" Anastasia said, quietly and with great satisfaction.

"Yeah," he said.

"That is the forest knowing you are back." She glanced at him sideways. "It does not do that for everyone."

They went deeper.

The markers were wrong.

Not wrong in one way. Wrong in several ways at once, which was more interesting and considerably less helpful. The first stone stack was simply gone — not knocked over, not scattered, gone, as though it had decided to be somewhere else and gone there. The second was still present but surrounded by a ring of mushrooms that had not been there before and which gave it the look of something that had been there for years rather than hours. The carved mark on the bark had not been closed over this time — it had simply migrated three feet to the left onto a completely different tree, which was not how bark worked and the forest was apparently aware of this and did not care.

"It moved them," the boy said.

"Some of them," Anastasia said, notebook out, writing. "Some were moved by animals. Some grew over naturally. And some—" she looked at the migrated carving, "—the forest moved those itself. For reasons of its own."

They searched for a while. Not briefly — a proper while, the kind that includes wrong turns and backtracks and at least two ponds that were not the right pond. The boy could tell because they were ordinary ponds — one with reeds, one with frogs. The frogs were perfectly good frogs. They were not what he was looking for.

The forest, for its part, found this entertaining.

They found Sir Armor by sound before sight — the quiet deliberate clank of someone who moves with purpose and does not apologize for the noise.

He was standing at a wide point in the path where three trails met, which was more trails than had been here yesterday and fewer than would be here tomorrow. His visor was down. His sword was out. He had the bearing of someone who has been guarding something for a long time and has developed strong feelings about it.

"Your Highnesses," he said, with the particular dignity of armor that has been standing in one place all night and considers this an accomplishment. "You have found the forest's centre path. Most travellers do not. Accidentally or otherwise."

"We are looking for the late fairy king's resting place," the boy said.

Sir Armor's visor turned toward him. A pause of the kind that means thinking.

"Forgive me, Your Highness," he said. "I do not know of such a place."

"It had a pond," Anastasia said. "A glowing one. With a white flower at the center and old mounds on the banks."

Sir Armor considered this carefully, then raised one gauntlet and pointed down the left-most path. "To the northeast there are many ponds. One of them may be what you are looking for, Your Highnesses. I cannot say which." He turned his visor back to the path ahead. "But I would advise caution regardless. The centre paths shift constantly. Many children come in here and lose themselves before they find anything at all."

"We will manage," Anastasia said.

"Many say so," Sir Armor said. "Most of them are still looking."

They went northeast.

They found a pond with a heron in it. The heron looked at them with the expression of a creature who had been there considerably longer than they had and intended to remain considerably longer after they left. It was not the right pond.

Anastasia turned to look at the boy.

"What if you use your magic?" she said. "Just — ask for the way. Ask for the right pond specifically. If my understanding of magic serves me right it might answer."

"You think so?"

"I think your power came the first time when you needed it," she said. "So ask for what you need."

He held out his hand. He thought about the pond — the glow, the flower, the warmth that had moved through him the night the First of Wings came. He thought about asking rather than telling.

What came was not a firefly.

It arrived from somewhere above the canopy, descending slowly through the gaps in the leaves — large, and not quite like any butterfly that had ever decided to exist in an ordinary sense. More like the idea of a butterfly given light and given a size that made the idea visible. Its wings scattered the morning in patterns that did not quite follow the rules of how scattered light was supposed to work.

It landed on his outstretched hand and sat there.

"A butterfly?" the boy said.

"Oh," Anastasia said, in the voice of someone for whom this is the best possible development.

The butterfly opened its wings once, slowly, with the air of something that has been sleeping for a long time and is deciding whether the world is worth engaging with. Then it lifted, drifted forward along the path, and looked back.

"I think it wants us to follow," Anastasia said, already walking.

"Yeah," the boy said. He was still looking at his hand. "I did not ask for a butterfly."

"You asked for the way," she said. "That is what came."

They followed the butterfly and Anastasia talked, which was, the forest noted approvingly, exactly how information was supposed to travel.

"Hey, do you wanna know something about magic?" she said. "I have been thinking about how to explain it properly and I think I finally worked it out."

"Yeah, go ahead," the boy said.

"Let's see, magic in itself is like an illusion, if I remember," she said. "Not fake — that is not what I mean. I mean it works the same way as one. Like a magician's trick." She stepped over a root without looking down. "A magician does something impossible in front of you and you see it and part of you believes it. That belief — that's what make magic, magic."

"So magic needs someone to believe in it?"

"Yeah. But here is the part most people miss." She turned slightly toward him as she walked. "The moment someone in the crowd says — no, that is not real, I can see the mechanism, here is how it works — the trick breaks. For that person. Everyone else still sees the magic. But the one who broke the illusion just sees a man waving his hands and thinks he looks a bit foolish."

The boy thought about a living room. About a man walking through a door and the spoons going silent.

"When the illusion breaks for someone," she continued, "magic slides right off them. Nothing lands. You could be the most powerful shaman in the world and if the person in front of you has made themselves completely real — completely grounded in hard ordinary fact, not one part of them allowing for the possibility — your magic would not touch them. They would not even see it. They would just think you were being very strange for no reason."

"Is that what almost happened to me?" the boy said quietly. "At the beginning?"

"I think so," she said. "Reality seeping in. And once it starts it is hard to stop — the walls will come down and the magic fades." She glanced at him. "It is easier to lose it when you are young. Children like us have it most naturally because we have not decided yet what is and is not possible. But it is fragile then too. Easy to break. As you get older most people lose it completely."

He said nothing. The butterfly drifted ahead of them, patient, lit from within.

"There are two types," she said. "Folk magic and fairy magic."

"Tell me both."

"Folk magic is the people's kind. The made kind. Think of a wise woman mixing herbs by firelight, or a ritual passed down through a hundred generations, or a charm above a door. It needs the right ingredients, the right steps, the right intention — miss any one of them and it does not work. I met a gnome once in the past — keeping things warm and mended, making sure the bread never went cold — that was folk magic. Hearth magic specifically. Small and careful and real."

Beside the path a rabbit sat very still. It had a coat that was more moss than fur, the way of rabbits that have been in one forest for a very long time, and it was listening with the focused attention of something that has opinions about the subject.

The boy noticed it. He did not say anything. Neither did the rabbit.

"Fairy magic is different," Anastasia said. "Completely different. Where folk magic works within the rules of the world, fairy magic simply does not acknowledge those rules exist. It is the flick-of-a-finger kind. One moment you can speak, the next you cannot — no ritual, no ingredients, just the fact of it. Its limits come from imagination and state of mind. The more clearly you can hold something in your mind as real, the more it can do. The limit is belief itself." She looked at him. "Which sounds simple. It is actually the hardest limit of all."

"Which one do I have?" the boy asked.

"Fairy magic," she said. "I am almost certain. Specifically — I have heard it called arts magic. A type of fairy magic that is very diverse and very personal. It takes a different form in everyone who has it." She glanced at the butterfly ahead.

"Which is probably why it keeps surprising you. It is not following a rulebook. It is following you." A pause. "I think the fairy kings of the past probably had something like it too."

Beside the path a deer had stopped walking, watching them with the unhurried attention of something that has decided this conversation is worth pausing for. Two small birds sat on a branch in a very audience-like arrangement. The moss rabbit was still following at a respectful distance.

Neither of the children mentioned any of this.

The butterfly stopped at the top of the slope.

Below them the hollow opened and both children went very still.

The same valley. The same mountains enormous and purple in the distance. But now — in full daylight, with the sun coming through the canopy in long generous shafts — it was something else entirely. Something that the dark had hidden and the light had been saving.

"Woah," the boy said.

Anastasia said nothing. She stood there with her notebook half-open and forgotten and her eyes moving slowly across all of it with the expression of someone trying to hold a very large thing in a small space.

Hummingbirds moved between the cliff flowers. A beehive in the roots of the great oak hummed with deep warm contentment. Butterflies drifted in the shafts of light. And beside the spring, sitting with its paws folded with great dignity, was a rabbit wearing what appeared to be a coat made entirely of moss, watching their arrival with enormous serious eyes.

The pond glowed. The flower turned toward the boy.

"I cannot believe we were here in the dark," Anastasia said finally. Her voice had gone slightly unsteady. "We could not see any of this."

"We were lost and frightened," the boy said.

"We walked right along that cliff edge." She pointed at it. "Right along the edge. In the dark. We could not see how far down it was."

They both looked at the cliff edge. Then down into the valley far below.

"Yeah," the boy said.

A pause.

"We could have fallen," she said.

"Yeah," he said.

They looked at each other. Then, at almost exactly the same moment, both of them started laughing — the relieved kind, the kind that comes out slightly breathless because it is only funny now that it did not happen, and the full weight of how much it did not happen has only just arrived.

"We walked right along the edge," she said, through the laughing.

"In the dark," he said.

"Holding hands."

"Following fireflies."

"Looking for a path."

They stood at the top of the slope and laughed until they were done, and then stood there a moment longer just breathing, and then went down.

The hollow received them the way it always did — quietly, as though it had been expecting this exact moment.

They explored it properly. The roots wide enough to sit on, smelling of rain and old wood. The spring cold and clean. The beehive hummed warmer when the boy passed near it. The moss rabbit watched them from beside the spring with its paws folded, unblinking, enormously dignified.

Eventually they found a wide flat stump near the cliff's edge — the remains of something ancient and enormous, worn smooth by weather and time, large enough for two children to lie on side by side with their arms behind their heads and look up at the canopy.

So they did.

The valley breathed below them. The waterfall was a sound like patience. A bird crossed the gap above, then another, going somewhere with the certainty of birds that know exactly where they are going.

"This place should be ours," Anastasia said eventually.

"Yeah," the boy said.

"Not just found. Ours. Like — we should build something here. A proper base. A kingdom." She turned her head to look at him. "Can you imagine it? With the spring at the center and the roots for walls and the cliff view and—"

"Yeah," the boy said. He was already seeing it. "I can."

He thought about a paper crown carried in both hands down a cobbled road. He thought about kingdoms made of chairs and blankets. He thought about what the difference was between pretending and building something that could actually stand.

"Let's build it," he said.

She smiled — the real one, not the careful graceful one but the one that surprised her by arriving.

"Yes," she said. She was already brushing moss off her dress. "Let's."

The hollow was very still around them. The pond glowed. The flower turned. The beehive hummed. The moss rabbit blinked once, slowly, which in moss rabbit language means something like: it is about time.

The forest allowed itself a moment of profound satisfaction.

Some things need to be said out loud before they can become true.

This had just become true.
