Rachel's voice broke the silence at the table.
"Brother, why did you ask us to come here? Or do you still want Lucy?"
She spoke with open anger, staring intensely at her brother, Oscar, who sat across the table. Beside her sat Jack, a beautiful and gentle young woman, observing the situation cautiously.
It was supposed to be a good day—a day to celebrate the beginning of a new relationship between Oscar and Jack. And Rachel, as the one who had helped bring them together, was the happiest of all. For a long time, Jack had wanted to be with Oscar, but Lucy's presence had been a major obstacle that made that dream seem impossible. So their breakup had become a stroke of luck for her.
At this point, Rachel believed Jack was the woman best suited for her brother, and she regretted ever having supported Lucy before.
However, that happiness began to fade the moment Oscar insisted on coming to that restaurant—the place he used to frequent with Lucy.
And that was what angered Rachel the most. Despite her efforts to connect her brother with another woman, it seemed her attempts had failed to extinguish the flame Lucy had ignited.
Jack, although she wasn't pleased to be there either, tried to calm her sister-in-law.
"Rachel, don't be like that," she said gently. "It's normal for someone to still have feelings after a breakup. It hasn't been long. Let's give him time."
Those words touched Oscar. He felt a bit guilty, and for the first time, he looked at Jack in a different way…
Gently, he took her hand.
"I'm sorry, Jack… and thank you for understanding," he said sincerely. "But the truth is, I'm used to coming here. The food here is really good… and I don't want to stop coming just because it's a place I used to share with my ex. That would be cowardly discipline."
