Chapter 3 - The Collapse Within

The Third Day

The Third day didn't begin the way the others had.

There was no soft light, no slow return of warmth across the desert. Instead, Kael woke up to a silence that felt heavy—unnatural, like the world itself was holding its breath.

He sat up slowly, his chest tight for reasons he couldn't explain. His children were beside him, still asleep, but their faces were tense, as if even their dreams had turned against them. One of them stirred, clutching his sleeve instinctively, and Kael gently placed his hand over theirs.

"I'm here," he whispered, more for himself than for them.

When he looked up at the sky, something felt wrong immediately.

The stars were still there—but they flickered. Not like normal light, but like something unstable, something breaking apart. Their glow pulsed unevenly, as if they were struggling to exist.

"Do you see that?" Lyra's voice came quietly from behind him.

Kael nodded.

For once, she didn't sound confident. There was hesitation in her tone—uncertainty.

Tovin quickly pulled out his device, tapping it a few times. Nothing happened. No light. No response.

"It's not working," he said, frowning. "It's like it's… dead."

Before anyone could react further, the voice returned.

But this time—

it wasn't the same.

It stuttered.

Glitched.

**"Th–Third Tr–Trial… b-begins…"**

And suddenly—

everything broke.

The ground beneath them cracked violently, splitting into massive pieces that shot upward into the air. Sand and stone scattered in every direction as the desert tore itself apart. The fragments didn't float peacefully—they collided, slammed into each other, then drifted apart again in chaotic patterns.

Kael grabbed his children instantly.

"Hold on to me!" he shouted.

Gravity twisted unpredictably. One moment it pulled them down, the next it dragged them sideways. Kael struggled to stay balanced as the platform beneath them tilted sharply.

Then—

everything changed.

Kael blinked—

and the desert vanished.

He was somewhere else.

A small, dimly lit room.

The air felt damp. The walls were cracked and stained. The silence pressed against his ears.

He knew this place.

His heart dropped.

"No…" he whispered.

A voice echoed behind him.

"You remember this, don't you?"

Kael turned slowly.

Standing there was… himself.

Not exactly—but close enough.

Older. Tired. Defeated.

The version of himself he feared becoming.

"You couldn't protect them before," the figure said calmly. "What makes you think you can now?"

Kael clenched his fists tightly.

"This isn't real."

The other him stepped closer.

"It doesn't have to be real… to be true."

The walls seemed to close in. The air grew heavier. For a moment, Kael felt like he couldn't breathe, like the room itself was crushing him.

Then—

"Papa!"

The voice shattered everything.

Kael's eyes snapped open.

He was back.

But not safe.

One of the floating fragments had broken away, carrying his children with it as it drifted further from him.

"Stay there!" he shouted.

Without thinking, Kael jumped.

The moment he left the ground, the air twisted around him. It felt like something was pulling him off course, trying to throw him into the empty space below.

But he didn't stop.

He pushed forward—

and barely made it.

He landed hard, pulling his children into his arms immediately.

"I've got you," he said, his voice shaking slightly. "I'm here."

Even though his heart was racing.

Around him, the others were struggling just as much.

Lyra stood frozen, her eyes wide as she stared at something invisible to everyone else. Patterns, numbers, broken fragments of logic flickered around her.

"This isn't just an illusion…" she muttered. "It's breaking how things work…"

Tovin looked lost.

His gadgets were gone.

All around him were pieces—broken, useless.

"You're nothing without them," a voice whispered.

Tovin shook his head, trying to focus.

"No… I made them. I can think without them."

But his voice wasn't steady.

The world grew more chaotic with every second.

Fragments collided harder.

Shadows twisted into shapes that didn't make sense.

Nothing felt stable anymore.

Nothing felt real.

Everyone was facing something different—

something personal.

Then—

Seren appeared.

Calm.

Still.

Like the chaos didn't belong to her.

"The stars aren't above you," she said softly.

Kael looked at her, confused.

"What do you mean?"

"They're not something you reach," she said. "They're something you understand."

Kael didn't fully get it.

But something about her words stayed with him.

He looked at his children again.

They were scared.

Shaking.

But still holding onto him.

That's when he realized—

the fear wasn't going away.

But maybe… it didn't have to.

"Listen to me," he told them gently. "Whatever you see—it's not real. Just stay with me."

They nodded.

That was enough.

Kael stood up again.

The world was still collapsing.

Nothing had changed.

But something inside him had.

Across the chaos, Lyra forced herself to move again, ignoring the broken patterns around her.

Tovin took a deep breath and stepped forward, even without his gadgets.

They didn't defeat the illusion.

They didn't stop it.

They just… kept going.

And somehow—

that worked.

The chaos slowly began to settle.

The fragments stopped crashing as violently.

The sky steadied just enough for the stars to glow again.

Then the voice returned.

Clear this time.

Cold.

**"The Third Trial is complete."**

Everything snapped back.

The desert returned.

Silence followed.

Kael looked around slowly.

Not everyone was there anymore.

Only a few remained.

Him.

His children.

Lyra.

Tovin.

And Seren.

The others were gone.

Not taken by traps.

Not lost to the ground.

But broken by what they saw.

Kael looked up at the stars again.

They didn't feel as distant anymore.

Not because they moved—

but because something inside him had changed.

And for the first time, he understood—

this was never just about reaching the stars.

It was about surviving yourself.
