Chapter 5 - [5] : Are Ghosts Just Cursed Spirits? The First Display of Cursed Spirit Manipulation

--------------------------------------------------

"Miko Yotsuya?"

Compared to that absurd list of quests, what really caught Kai's attention was the girl's name.

Miko Yotsuya?

She possessed a pair of Yin-Yang eyes that allowed her to see grotesque "ghosts." But because she lacked any actual means to exorcise or fight them, she spent her life walking on eggshells, utterly terrified that these entities would realize she could see them.

According to her anime's established lore, the second a ghost figured out you could see them, they would immediately go on the attack.

"Is there even a difference between these ghosts and Cursed Spirits?"

Both were completely invisible to ordinary humans, and both possessed incomprehensible supernatural power.

If Cursed Spirit Manipulation worked on Cursed Spirits, there was absolutely no reason it wouldn't work on these ghosts.

That was it. That had to be the case.

A rush of excitement hit Kai. If Miko Yotsuya was radiating this much fear right now, it meant there was definitely a ghost lurking nearby—even if he couldn't see it yet.

Realizing what he needed to do, Kai calmed his mind and focused.

Since he had just unlocked Cursed Spirit Manipulation, his overall reserves of Cursed Energy weren't particularly massive, and his control over it was still in the absolute beginner stages.

As he consciously guided it, he could feel a distinct, pulsating energy begin to circulate throughout his entire body. His vision gradually sharpened, piercing through the mundane veil.

He saw it!

"Can you see me? Can you see me...?"

Miko Yotsuya had always believed she was just an ordinary high school girl—right up until today.

Standing there waiting for her bus home, Miko felt her entire worldview completely collapse.

What the hell is that??

A grotesque monster—easily two meters tall, covered in pitch-black skin, and sporting a horrifyingly twisted physique—was slowly shambling toward her, muttering incessantly under its breath.

It wasn't that Miko didn't want to run; she was just paralyzed by sheer terror. Her legs felt like they were filled with solid lead, leaving her with no choice but to watch helplessly as the monster drew closer.

For some inexplicable reason, her gut screamed at her: if this monster realized she could see it, something incredibly terrible was going to happen.

Left with zero options, she kept her head down and pulled out her phone.

Her delicate fingers tapped mindlessly against the screen while she prayed desperately for the monster to just go away.

'Why is this happening? I'm just a normal high school girl... why am I dealing with this?'

Even though her mind was an absolute spiraling mess, she forced herself to project a calm exterior, though cold sweat was already beading on her forehead.

"I can't believe Hana had stuff to do today. Guess I've got no choice but to head home alone,"

Miko muttered aloud, pretending to talk to herself in a desperate bid to misdirect the entity's attention as it loomed closer.

"You can't see me?"

Finally, seemingly convinced that Miko couldn't see it, the monster let out a disappointed groan and began to turn away.

Miko let out a microscopic sigh of relief.

But right at that moment, she suddenly heard someone nearby say her name.

"Huh?"

She instinctively turned her head and spotted Kai standing just a short distance away.

Even though she didn't recognize him, he was wearing the standard Sobu High uniform, leading her to guess he was probably a schoolmate who had heard of her.

"You..."

Before she could even get the words out, the guy suddenly spoke up.

"I can see you!!"

"???"

Miko froze for a split second before her expression warped into absolute horror.

He could see it too.

"DON'T!"

She instinctively tried to stop him, the sickening dread in her stomach instantly maxing out.

"You can see me! You can see me!"

Just as she feared, the exact second the monster realized Kai could see it, it went completely berserk, roaring as it lunged straight toward his position.

"Eat you!"

"Run!"

Miko didn't even know what she was thinking. Maybe she just couldn't stomach the idea of watching a total stranger die right in front of her. She threw her hand up, desperate to warn him to run for his life.

But what happened in the very next second etched a scene into Miko's mind that she knew she would never, ever forget.

————————————————————

"I can do this!"

Staring down the roaring "Cursed Spirit" charging right at him, Kai clenched his fists.

There was definitely a flash of fear at confronting the unknown, but it was entirely eclipsed by the sheer thrill of finally stepping into the supernatural world. The Cursed Energy surging through his veins gave him an unshakable surge of confidence. He was going to win!

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMM!

He smoothly sidestepped the Cursed Spirit's lethal pounce, simultaneously driving a brutal, heavy punch straight into its ribs.

The raw kinetic impact sent the monster staggering several steps backward.

"A Grade 4 Cursed Spirit!"

According to the lore of the Jujutsu world, Grade 4 was the absolute weakest classification of Cursed Spirits. Generally speaking, as long as they didn't panic, a physically fit adult male could beat one to death with a wooden baseball bat or a similar blunt weapon.

And for a Jujutsu Sorcerer? The moment they learned how to channel Cursed Energy, their physical specs completely transcended those of a normal human.

"Kill you!"

Grade 4 Cursed Spirits had basically zero intelligence; they fought entirely on primal instinct.

Even after getting knocked back, it showed zero fear, instantly throwing itself back into the fight with another savage lunge.

Before he transmigrated, Kai had picked up some solid mixed martial arts during his college years. Handling a brainless, brawling Grade 4 Cursed Spirit that only knew how to charge forward was a total walk in the park.

His movements transitioned from slightly stiff at the start to completely fluid and effortless.

"A-Amazing!"

Miko Yotsuya stared fixedly at the scene unfolding before her, her golden eyes wide with shock.

She felt her entire worldview collapse all over again.

"That's about enough!"

Sensing that the Grade 4 Cursed Spirit was on its last legs, Kai hammered it backward one final time.

He raised a single hand, aiming his palm dead center at the Cursed Spirit.

"Cursed Spirit Manipulation!"

This was his very first time using the technique. A Grade 4 Cursed Spirit was the perfect test dummy to gauge its actual effects.

Vmmmm!

The Cursed Spirit's movements violently froze. In the very next second, an overwhelming, inescapable gravitational pull erupted from Kai's palm, completely engulfing the entity as the effects of the technique took hold.

The Cursed Spirit's massive body began to twist, warp, and compress inch by inch, floating inexorably toward his outstretched hand.

In a matter of seconds.

A dense, palm-sized black orb materialized in his grip. The Cursed Spirit had been completely absorbed.

"And for the next part..."

Remembering the scenes he'd watched in the anime, Kai hesitated for barely a fraction of a second before tilting his head back, preparing to swallow the orb whole.

"He... he ate it!"

Watching this happen, Miko couldn't stop herself from gasping out loud.

But terrified of drawing attention to herself, she immediately clamped both hands tightly over her mouth.

But Kai didn't have the time or the bandwidth to care about what Miko was thinking right now. He had fully braced himself for the orb to taste absolutely god-awful, but the second it hit his tongue, it dissolved instantly.

It slid down his throat without a single trace of flavor.

"Did it actually work?"
