Chapter 6 - Fracture

Risu felt the magic before she saw it.

The air above Cronos vibrated unnaturally, pressure rippling outward in uneven pulses that made her instincts sharpen. By the time she reached the edge of the training grounds, the sky had already darkened into full night, and light—white, electric, metallic—flashed against the open field in violent intervals.

She stepped forward, but her foot sank into shadow.

The darkness beneath her elongated unnaturally, thickening around her ankles like liquid restraint. She tried to move, but the ground refused to respond.

Deneb emerged from the dim perimeter of the field, her expression controlled, almost calm. In the dark, her magic was stronger; the shadows obeyed her with quiet precision.

"You shouldn't be here," Deneb said.

Risu strained against the hold, her eyes fixed on the battlefield beyond.

She couldn't hear the words being exchanged.

But she could see enough.

Lightning split the air in controlled arcs around Taren, never wild, never wasted. Vega stood opposite him, a tuning fork vibrating violently in his grip, the sound warping the atmosphere until dust lifted from the ground and hovered in trembling suspension. Tenshi's blade of light cut clean lines through the dark, and for a fleeting moment a single white wing manifested behind him, stabilizing his stance mid-strike before dissolving into shards of radiance. Altair moved with unsettling precision, reshaping fractured metal from the training field into sharp extensions that shifted form with every flick of his wrist.

They weren't fighting recklessly.

They were fighting like soldiers who knew each other too well.

High above, from the tall windows of the academic building, a solitary silhouette watched. Lightning reflected briefly in Ryuu's eyes, but he did not move. He simply observed.

On the field, Taren's voice carried faintly through the wind.

"You think digging it up makes you different?"

"It makes it honest," Vega replied.

The next exchange came faster.

Taren surged forward, electricity snapping low along the ground. Vega struck the tuning fork against Altair's reshaped metal, amplifying the vibration into a concussive wave. Tenshi intercepted with a sweep of light, the blade refracting the sound just enough to redirect its path.

"You don't get to pretend we weren't made for this," Taren said.

"And you don't get to decide we stay that way," Vega answered.

The collision that followed was inevitable.

Lightning met vibration mid-air. Light intersected steel. The combined impact detonated outward in a blinding shockwave that tore across the field.

The shadows shattered.

Deneb staggered back as her hold on Risu broke.

At the far edge of the training grounds, beneath the spill of the field lights, Kaga stood frozen. She hadn't stepped in. She hadn't called out. But she had seen enough to understand this was no ordinary dispute.

Risu didn't hesitate.

Her aura ignited.

Energy surged along her limbs, tightening her muscles, sharpening her reflexes. Her tail extended behind her in a fluid arc, elongating, thickening with controlled force. She leapt, cutting through the space between them in a single bound.

She landed in the center of the field.

Her fist struck the ground.

The impact cracked the surface and sent a contained shockwave outward, forceful enough to drive space between them.

"Stop!"

The word carried weight.

Electricity fizzled. Light dimmed. Metal froze mid-shift. The tuning fork's hum died into silence.

For a moment, no one moved.

Deneb stepped forward into the open.

"Careful," she said evenly. "She's not just a classmate."

Risu's heart dropped.

"She's police."

The word hung in the night air like a verdict.

Tenshi lowered his blade first, confusion flickering across his face. Altair's expression didn't change, but the metal in his hand dissolved back into its original form as it fell to the ground. Haruka watched without speaking.

Risu took a step forward. "Yes. I am."

Silence.

"It was my assignment," she continued quickly, her voice tightening. "But I wasn't using you. I just wanted to understand. Ask Vega."

She hadn't meant to say it like that.

The moment the words left her mouth, she felt it.

Taren turned slowly.

Not toward her.

Toward Vega.

"You knew."

There was no anger in his voice.

That was worse.

Vega didn't answer immediately. The tuning fork in his hand slipped from his fingers and struck the ground with a dull, lifeless sound.

"I did, but…" he said at last. "It doesn't change anything."

"It changes everything," Taren replied.

He moved without warning.

Not at Risu.

At Vega.

Lightning surged up his arm in a sharp, restrained arc but, before it could connect, the air compressed violently around him. Gravity intensified in a focused column, forcing him down just enough to halt the strike.

"Enough," Haruka said quietly.

Taren's jaw tightened against the pressure. For a moment it looked as if he might push through it anyway.

Then he let the electricity fade.

He stood as Haruka released her magic.

Taren walked past Risu without looking at her.

Tenshi followed, as his blade dissolved into scattered light. Haruka stepped after them, her expression unreadable.

The space they left behind felt colder.

Risu's aura dimmed slowly. The strength drained from her limbs, replaced by something heavier.

She hadn't planned to expose Vega.

She hadn't planned for any of this.

Deneb moved toward him. "You don't have to follow her," she said, low and urgent. "She's not here for you. She was gathering information on New Order."

Risu flinched at the name spoken openly.

Vega's gaze shifted briefly to Deneb.

Then to Risu.

She looked smaller now, despite the power she had just displayed. Not weak, just wounded.

Like someone who had realized too late what the truth cost.

Vega hesitated.

Just one second.

Then he walked past Deneb.

She reached for him, shadows curling instinctively at her feet—but he didn't slow.

Risu didn't speak.

She turned and left the field in silence.

He followed.

The cafeteria lights were still on.

Taren pushed open the door with more force than necessary and dropped into one of the long benches near the window. The place was empty at this hour.

"I'm hungry," he muttered.

Tenshi sat across from him. Haruka remained standing for a moment before joining them.

No one commented.

Food was easier than feelings.

The door opened again.

Kaga stepped inside, pausing when she saw them together in silence.

"I knew something was wrong," she said softly.

Taren didn't look up.

She approached the table anyway. "You don't fight like that for nothing."

Tenshi exchanged a glance with Haruka.

Kaga's gaze lingered on Taren. "I'm not stupid."

The quiet stretched.

Finally, Taren exhaled.

"You're right," he said.

He looked at the table, not at her.

"It's time you knew."

The lights hummed faintly overhead.

Outside, the academy grounds were calm again.

But nothing in Cronos was the same.
