Inside the car, Emily still felt shaken.
Alexander drove quickly through the city.
His hands were tight on the steering wheel.
Emily finally spoke.
"You think Sophia did this?"
Alexander didn't answer immediately.
But his silence was enough.
Emily felt chills run down her spine.
"She's really that dangerous?"
Alexander's voice was quiet.
"Yes."
Emily stared out the window.
"This is getting scary."
Alexander glanced at her.
"I'll make sure you're safe."
Emily looked at him.
"You already saved me tonight."
Alexander slowed the car near her apartment.
The streetlights reflected across the windshield.
Emily turned toward him.
"You keep protecting me."
Alexander answered simply.
"I always will."
Emily's heart raced again.
Because the way he said it…
Didn't sound like a contract anymore.
It sounded like a promise.
