Later that evening Emily returned to work.
Alexander had insisted she rest, but she hated staying home.
When she walked into the office, Alexander immediately noticed.
"I told you to rest."
Emily shrugged.
"I'm bored at home."
Alexander sighed.
"You're stubborn."
Emily smiled.
"You already knew that."
The office was quiet.
Most employees had gone home.
Emily sat on the couch near the window.
Alexander worked at his desk.
After a few minutes Emily spoke softly.
"Alexander."
"Yes?"
Emily hesitated.
"Why did you really defend me?"
Alexander looked up.
"What do you mean?"
Emily continued quietly.
"You fought the board… the media… and Sophia."
She looked directly at him.
"That's not something a boss does for an employee."
Alexander stood up slowly.
Then he walked toward her.
The city lights reflected behind him.
"You want the truth?"
Emily nodded.
"Yes."
