Chapter 29 - When Silence Gets Loud

The front doors didn't open quietly.

They creaked.

Slow.

Heavy.

Like the house itself was reacting.

Merlin stepped in first.

Her heels clicked against the marble—sharp, uneven.

Too loud for a normal entrance.

Leon followed behind her.

Not close.

Not far.

Just enough to be felt.

The room noticed.

Immediately.

Minho stopped mid-sentence.

Luna's smile faded without finishing.

Aria didn't shift, but her eyes sharpened—taking in everything.

Merlin's stiff shoulders.

Leon's loosened collar.

The space between them that somehow felt… charged.

And Jisoo—

He didn't move at all.

Standing near the fireplace, he watched.

Not with suspicion.

Not even with anger.

With quiet focus.

As if he was trying to confirm something.

And whatever he was looking for—

It wasn't there.

"So…" Minho said, breaking the silence awkwardly.

"That took longer than expected."

He forced a grin.

"Was it worth disappearing for hours?"

Merlin let out a small breath.

"Yeah… I mean—"

She paused.

Reset.

"It was fine."

Fine.

The word felt wrong the moment it left her mouth.

Leon didn't speak.

He walked past her.

Close enough that his sleeve brushed her arm.

Not an accident.

A reminder.

Jisoo noticed.

His expression didn't change—

but something behind it did.

"Did you guys eat?" Luna asked quickly, trying to lighten things.

"We did," Leon answered.

Short.

Flat.

No explanation.

Merlin tried to join the conversation.

Tried to laugh at something Minho said next.

But she was off.

A second too late.

A little too quiet.

Like she hadn't fully come back yet.

"Merlin."

Jisoo's voice wasn't loud.

But it cut through everything.

"Come with me."

He didn't wait.

He just walked.

And she followed.

The conservatory felt colder than usual.

Glass walls.

Dim lights.

The faint scent of night air drifting in.

Jisoo stood still for a moment.

Then turned.

His expression wasn't sharp.

It was worse.

It was careful.

"I'm not asking what happened," he said.

Merlin blinked.

"I don't need details."

He stepped closer.

Not touching.

But close enough to matter.

"I just need to understand one thing."

His eyes locked onto hers.

"Are you still the same with me?"

That question—

hit harder than anything else.

Merlin looked down.

"I—"

She stopped.

"It was just a long day," she tried.

Jisoo exhaled quietly.

"Don't do that."

She looked up.

"Don't give me something safe," he said.

"Just be real with me."

Silence stretched.

"I saw you earlier," he added.

A pause.

"You looked at him differently."

Merlin froze.

Because that wasn't something she could deny.

And he knew it.

"I'm not asking if you like him," Jisoo said.

"Or what happened."

Another step closer.

"I'm asking if I'm still standing in the same place with you."

That—

was the real question.

And she didn't have an answer.

Elsewhere—

Kiara leaned against the hallway wall.

Waiting.

Leon walked past.

She smiled immediately.

"Well… that was quick," she said softly.

Leon didn't stop.

"You don't look like someone who wasted time."

That made him pause.

"I don't waste time," he replied.

Kiara stepped closer.

"I can tell."

Her gaze scanned him carefully.

"Something shifted."

Leon didn't respond.

But he didn't deny it either.

"That girl," Kiara continued, almost amused,

"she's not as unaffected as she pretends."

A pause.

"And neither are you."

Leon glanced at her briefly.

"I don't pretend."

Kiara smiled wider.

"Good."

Because she understood something clearly now—

This wasn't passive anymore.

Merlin stepped back into the main hall.

Leon appeared from the opposite side.

And then—

Jisoo followed behind her.

The three of them stopped.

Not planned.

Not intentional.

But inevitable.

No one spoke.

Jisoo looked at Merlin.

Still steady.

Still waiting.

Leon looked at her.

Calm.

But unwavering.

And Merlin—

stood in between them.

Not confused anymore.

Just aware.

Aware that something had shifted.

That whatever balance she had before—

was gone.

She looked at Jisoo.

Comfort.

Familiarity.

Something steady.

Then at Leon.

Unpredictable.

Pulling.

Impossible to ignore.

And for the first time—

she didn't try to smooth it out.

She just stood there.

This wasn't about what happened earlier.

It was about what couldn't be undone now.

And the worst part?

Everyone in that room could feel it.
