Chapter 6 - The Secrets Behind His Eyes

The room felt silent.

Not the peaceful silence of a quiet night, but the heavy kind—the kind that pressed against Amara's chest and made it hard to breathe.

The dim light from the bedside lamp cast long shadows across the walls. Outside, the wind rustled the tall trees surrounding the mansion, their branches scratching softly against the windows like restless fingers.

Amara stood near the edge of the bed, her heart beating faster with every passing second.

Moments ago, she had realized something terrifying.

She hadn't just married a stranger.

She had married a man surrounded by secrets.

And enemies.

And whatever those secrets were…

They were only beginning to surface.

She turned slowly toward the door of the bedroom. The hallway outside was dark and quiet, yet the memory of the conversation she had overheard downstairs replayed endlessly in her mind.

"They're watching the house."

"He should have never brought her here."

"If they discover the marriage, she'll become a target."

Those words still echoed in her ears.

Her hands trembled slightly.

A target?

Why would anyone want to hurt her?

She was just an ordinary woman who had made a desperate decision to save her family.

Yet somehow, that decision had placed her in the center of something dangerous.

Something far bigger than she understood.

Amara wrapped her arms around herself and slowly walked toward the window.

The mansion grounds stretched far into the darkness beyond the glass. Tall gates surrounded the property, and security lights glowed faintly near the entrance.

At first glance, the place looked safe.

Protected.

But tonight, it felt like a beautiful prison.

Her thoughts drifted back to the man she had married.

Lucien.

Even thinking his name made her uneasy.

He was mysterious, calm, and strangely distant. From the moment she met him, there had been something unreadable in his eyes—like a storm hidden behind still water.

And yet…

He had never been cruel to her.

In fact, there were moments when he seemed almost protective.

That only made things more confusing.

"Who are you really?" Amara whispered softly.

As if responding to her question, the door behind her opened.

Amara turned quickly.

Lucien stood in the doorway.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

He was still dressed in dark clothing, his jacket hanging loosely over his shoulders. His expression was calm, but there was tension in the way he held himself.

He had heard something.

Or sensed something.

His eyes moved toward her.

"You're still awake," he said quietly.

Amara swallowed.

"Yes."

Lucien stepped inside the room and closed the door behind him.

The faint click of the lock echoed loudly in the silence.

Amara felt her heartbeat quicken.

She didn't know why, but every time he came close, the air in the room seemed to change.

"You should be resting," Lucien continued.

Amara stared at him.

Her mind was racing.

Should she ask?

Should she pretend she heard nothing?

But the words escaped before she could stop them.

"Who is watching the house?"

Lucien froze.

For the first time since she met him, the calm mask on his face cracked slightly.

His eyes sharpened.

"What did you say?"

Amara forced herself to stay calm.

"I heard the conversation downstairs."

The room became very still.

Lucien studied her carefully, as if trying to measure how much she knew.

"How much did you hear?" he asked slowly.

"Enough," Amara replied.

A long silence followed.

Lucien walked toward the window, standing beside her.

From this distance, Amara could see the faint scar running along his jawline.

She had noticed it before, but never asked about it.

Now it seemed like another piece of a puzzle she didn't understand.

"You shouldn't have heard that," he said quietly.

Amara let out a small, frustrated laugh.

"Well, I did."

Lucien said nothing.

She turned to face him.

"You told me this marriage was simple," she continued. "A contract. A solution for both of us."

"That part is still true."

"Then why are people watching this house?"

Lucien looked at her.

For a moment, something complicated flickered in his eyes.

Regret.

Concern.

Maybe even guilt.

"You're safer here than anywhere else," he said.

"That doesn't answer my question."

Lucien sighed softly.

"You're stubborn."

"I'm confused," Amara corrected.

Lucien remained silent for a long moment.

Then he walked past her and sat down in the chair near the bed.

His posture was relaxed, but his eyes were distant.

Like a man deciding how much truth he could reveal.

"Before I answer your question," he said slowly, "you need to understand something."

Amara waited.

"My life is not simple."

"That's obvious."

Lucien almost smiled.

"Many years ago, my family built something powerful," he continued.

"What kind of power?"

"Influence. Money. Connections."

Amara frowned.

"That sounds like every rich family."

Lucien shook his head.

"No. Ours is different."

He leaned back in the chair.

"Some people would call it a business empire."

"And others?" Amara asked quietly.

Lucien's gaze hardened slightly.

"Others would call it a war."

A chill ran through Amara.

"War?"

Lucien nodded once.

"There are people who want what my family controls. People who have spent years trying to take it."

"And you're involved in this?"

Lucien looked directly at her.

"I lead it."

The words settled heavily in the room.

Amara stared at him.

"You mean… you're the head of this… empire?"

"Yes."

Her mind struggled to process it.

"You never told me that."

"You never asked."

"That's not fair."

Lucien's expression softened slightly.

"No. It isn't."

Amara looked away, her thoughts spinning.

"So the people watching the house… they're enemies?"

"Yes."

Her stomach tightened.

"And because I married you…"

Lucien finished the sentence.

"You might become a target."

The reality of those words sent a cold wave through her chest.

Amara moved slowly toward the bed and sat down.

"You should have told me."

Lucien didn't argue.

"You're right."

"Then why didn't you?"

Lucien looked down at his hands.

"For the same reason I agreed to the marriage in the first place."

Amara waited.

"Because I thought keeping you in the dark would protect you."

Silence filled the room again.

For the first time, Amara saw something vulnerable in his expression.

He wasn't just hiding secrets.

He was carrying the weight of them.

"You think I'm weak," she said quietly.

Lucien immediately shook his head.

"No."

"Then why treat me like someone who can't handle the truth?"

Lucien met her eyes.

"Because the truth is dangerous."

Amara held his gaze.

"So is ignorance."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then something unexpected happened.

Lucien stood and walked toward her.

He stopped only a few steps away.

Up close, his presence felt overwhelming.

Not threatening.

Just powerful.

"You're braver than I expected," he said quietly.

Amara felt her cheeks warm slightly.

"I didn't agree to this marriage to be treated like a fragile object."

Lucien nodded slowly.

"I see that now."

He hesitated for a moment.

Then he said something that surprised her.

"I'm sorry."

Amara blinked.

She hadn't expected an apology from him.

Lucien continued.

"I should have prepared you better."

She studied his face.

"You mean warn me that marrying you could get me killed?"

Lucien's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

The honesty in his voice startled her.

For a moment, fear returned.

But strangely…

It was mixed with something else.

Curiosity.

Because despite everything she had learned tonight, one question still remained.

"If your life is this dangerous…" she said slowly, "why marry me at all?"

Lucien was quiet for several seconds.

When he finally answered, his voice was softer than before.

"Because you were never supposed to matter."

Amara's heart skipped.

"What does that mean?"

Lucien looked at her with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"This marriage was meant to be temporary."

"That's what you said."

"But something changed."

The air between them felt different now.

Charged.

Unpredictable.

Amara swallowed.

"What changed?"

Lucien opened his mouth to answer—

Suddenly, a loud sound echoed outside the mansion.

BANG.

Both of them froze.

Another sound followed.

Shouting.

Running footsteps.

Then the distant crack of something breaking.

Amara's eyes widened.

"What was that?"

Lucien's expression transformed instantly.

All the softness vanished.

In its place was cold, sharp focus.

The look of a man who had faced danger many times before.

"They're here," he said.

Amara felt fear rush through her.

"Who?"

Lucien moved quickly toward the door.

"Our enemies."

He paused and looked back at her.

"Lock this door and stay inside."

"What about you?"

Lucien's voice became dangerously calm.

"I'm going to remind them why attacking this house is a mistake."

With that, he stepped out of the room and disappeared into the dark hallway.

Amara sat frozen on the bed.

Her heart pounded loudly in her chest.

Outside the room, more shouting echoed through the mansion.

Footsteps rushed across the floor.

Then—

A gunshot rang through the night.

Amara gasped.

Her hands trembled as she stood and slowly walked toward the door.

Lucien had told her to stay inside.

But curiosity…

And fear…

Pulled her closer.

She reached the door and placed her hand on the handle.

For a moment she hesitated.

Then she turned it slightly and opened the door just enough to see into the hallway.

The mansion was no longer quiet.

Men were running downstairs.

Guards shouted orders.

And somewhere below—

Lucien's cold voice echoed through the chaos.

"Find them."

Amara realized something terrifying in that moment.

The man she had married wasn't just a stranger.

He was a man living in a world of danger, power, and violence.

And now…

She was part of that world too.

But what she didn't know—

What she couldn't possibly know yet—

Was that tonight's attack was only the beginning.

Because somewhere in the darkness outside the mansion…

Someone was watching the house.

And that person wasn't interested in Lucien.

They were interested in Amara. 🔥
