I woke with a glow that even I could not account for. Whether it was the Sunday quiet of the castle or the fact that Azrael had decided to stay home and work from his study rather than leaving at dawn, I could not say with certainty. Perhaps it was both. Perhaps it was neither.
Whatever the reason, I was happy. Properly, quietly happy — the kind that sat in the chest rather than the face.
I had all but forgotten that I was supposed to be dead by now. A few weeks had come and gone and here I was, very much alive, filling out the dresses in my wardrobe and learning the names of every servant in the castle. If the Moon Goddess had seen fit to spare me from whatever fate had claimed Azrael's previous wives, then the least I could do was live as fully as possible — not just as Elowen, which I was in secret, but as the Luna of this pack, which I was becoming in truth.
