Chapter 15 - 15. The Plant Has Opinions About Being Named The Plant

The morning after the goblin hut Kenji did something he hadn't done since arriving in the greenhouse.

He looked at the other plants.

Not casually - not the ambient Flora Communication awareness he maintained continuously, the background hum of seventeen signatures going about their business. He looked deliberately, the way he looked at dungeon floors and cave layouts and goblin children in cold huts - with the full attention of someone extracting information rather than simply receiving it.

He went through them one by one.

The large established ones near the left wall - old, their root systems filling the soil in complex overlapping architectures, their mana signatures the deep steady quality of things that had been in one place long enough to stop developing and start simply being. Stable. Rank E, all of them.

The younger ones in the centre - still figuring out what they were going to be. Also Rank E. Also stable.

The ones near the back, where the light was softer -

He stopped.

One of them was different.

Not dramatically different. Not glowing, not obviously changed, not doing anything that would have caught Hana's attention during her morning rounds. It looked exactly like the plant it had been yesterday - a mid-sized specimen with broad leaves and a root system his Flora Communication had previously registered as unremarkable.

But the mana signature had changed.

Rank E had become Rank D.

Not recently - the signature had the settled quality of something that had completed a transition rather than one mid-process. It had happened quietly, in the background of everything else, and it was looking at him with the particular patience of something that had been waiting for him to notice.

He asked the system.

[ Query: Plant entity — Rank advancement - Cause? ]

[ Processing… ]

[ Result: Mana leakage from host entity ]

[ Explanation: Your passive mana output has been saturating the greenhouse soil since arrival. Plants in immediate vicinity have been absorbing excess continuously. Most entities lack the biological architecture to process this volume. This entity has successfully processed and advanced. ]

[ Additional notification: Rank D entity is requesting bond formation with host. ]

He read it twice.

He had been leaking mana into the soil the entire time and one greenhouse plant had quietly absorbed enough of it to rank up. He filed this under things about himself he hadn't known and kept reading.

[ Bond Request: Awaiting response ]

[ Requesting entity: Special Grade designation - Dormant capabilities detected ]

Special Grade. He looked at the plant across the greenhouse with the reassessment of someone who had just received new information about something they'd been treating as background.

[ Special Grade capabilities: Host Duplication - Entity can produce a perfect physical duplicate of its bonded host. Duplicate remains stationary and maintains host's appearance. Host is free to move. ]

He read this three times.

He was hesitant.

This was honest and he didn't try to rationalise it away. The last bond he'd formed had been with Stony Dark - and the weight of that bond, what it had meant and what it had cost, was not something he had finished processing. Bonds were not neutral things. He had established this as a position and intended to maintain it.

But.

He had heard Hana three days ago talking to someone outside the greenhouse - a conversation he'd caught fragments of through the glass, her voice carrying the tone she used when explaining something remarkable. She'd been talking about this plant. About a capability she'd documented but not fully understood. About duplication.

He thought about every morning since arriving here. Rooted in the greenhouse while the forest was out there, while the cave hillside was out there, while the goblin child in the cold hut needed things he couldn't deliver without the sunrise deadline cutting his window short. He thought about Hana's morning rounds - finding him exactly where she'd left him, trimming his roots, keeping him contained.

What if she found him exactly where she'd left him because he was exactly where she'd left him.

A perfect physical duplicate. Rooted in his spot. Maintaining his appearance. Looking like a plant that had spent the entire night doing nothing unusual.

While the real Kenji was in the forest.

All night if necessary. No deadline. No sprint back before sunrise. No counting minutes against the lightening sky.

The logistics brain produced its assessment without being asked.

This changes everything.

He looked at the Rank D plant.

It looked back with the particular patience of something that had been waiting and was prepared to continue waiting but had a preference for a resolution.

He formed the bond.

[ Bond Formation: Confirmed ]

[ Bond Type: Sovereign-Subordinate ]

[ Subordinate: Rank D - Special Grade ]

[ Host Duplication: Active ]

[ Duplicate properties: Perfect physical copy of host - stationary, rooted, visually identical. Maintained until host returns and bond is temporarily suspended. ]

[ Evolution Points: Subordinate points transferable to host upon request ]

Then — quieter, arriving with the particular quality of things the system hadn't anticipated:

[ Technique Developing… ]

[ Technique Developing… ]

[ NEW TECHNIQUE UNLOCKED ]

[ Healing — Lv.1 ]

[ Classification: Technique — Not a Skill ]

[ Mana Cost: None ]

[ Cooldown: None ]

[ Effect: Produce a healing compound from absorbed organic material. Accelerates cellular regeneration in plant-class and compatible organic entities. Can be concentrated into potion form. Output scales with absorbed material quality. ]

[ System Note: This technique emerged from the bond. The subordinate carried the capability dormant. The bond activated it in you both. ]

He read it twice.

Healing. Not a path, not an assigned skill - a technique, emerging from a bond he'd almost not formed, arriving without cost or cooldown or the system's permission. The thing he'd been trying to reach through every evolution, every calculation, every careful accumulation of points in a greenhouse while the cave hillside sat at an unknown distance with an unknown answer inside it.

He thought about the goblin child. Hypothermic. Shivering under a leaf blanket with the compound helping but not enough, not fast enough, not the right kind of help.

He thought about Stony Dark.

He thought about what healing meant when it was a technique rather than a path. When it had no ceiling set by the system. When it could level up as far as his understanding of it could take it.

He looked at his subordinate across the greenhouse.

I'm not naming you, he communicated through the bond, clearly and without ambiguity. You're the Plant. That's sufficient.

The communication that came back was not words. It was the botanical equivalent of a very patient, very unimpressed silence.

The Plant, Kenji confirmed.

The duplicate appeared beside him twelve minutes later.

He felt it emerge through the bond - not a biological process exactly, more like the subordinate reaching into the space he occupied and producing a version of it, a copy assembled from mana and botanical matter and whatever the Special Grade capability used as raw material. It formed beside him in the greenhouse soil with the complete composure of something that had always existed.

He looked at it.

It looked - or faced, or oriented, the duplicate not having his awareness - exactly as he did. Same stem height, same limb arrangement, same crown sprout angle, same root depth in the soil. Visually identical in every way that Hana's morning inspection would measure.

[ Host Duplicate: Active ]

[ Status: Stationary - Rooted - Visually identical to host ]

[ Duration: Until host returns and signals suspension ]

He moved to the side. The duplicate did not move. It remained exactly where it was, in exactly the position he'd been in, with exactly the appearance of a plant that had spent the night doing nothing unusual and intended to continue doing nothing unusual until someone came to trim its roots.

He looked at the greenhouse door.

He looked at the sky - still dark, still the deep blue of genuine night rather than the pre-dawn grey he'd been racing against every previous excursion.

He had the entire night.

No deadline. No sprint. No counting minutes.

He worked the latch and went out into the dark.

Behind him in the greenhouse, the duplicate held its position in the soil.

The Plant settled back into its spot nearby, its Special Grade signature quiet and steady, maintaining the bond with the particular patience of something that had decided this was its function and was performing it completely.

Kenji moved through the village edge and into the forest with the unhurried pace of something that for the first time since arriving above ground did not have somewhere it needed to be before the light changed.

[ Healing Lv.1: Active ]

[ First potion compound: Processing ]

[ Evolution Points: 371 / 500 ]

[ Stony Dark: Unknown ]

He thought about the goblin child in the cold hut. About what a healing potion made from proper forest herbs collected without a time constraint could do for something small and sick and alone.

He moved deeper into the forest.

The night was long.

For once, that was exactly what he needed.
