The silence inside Adrian's office stretched for several seconds after Elena spoke.
Neither of them moved.
Sunlight streamed through the tall glass windows behind Adrian, filling the room with a pale morning glow. From this height, the city looked calm and distant...., cars moving like tiny lines of light along the streets below.
But the atmosphere inside the office felt anything but calm.
Elena stood a few steps away from his desk, her arms still crossed, watching him carefully.
Adrian could see the determination in her expression.
The same determination he remembered from years ago.
At St. Aurelius Academy, she had been the only person who spoke to him like he was normal.
The only person who didn't step aside when he entered a room.
Back then, he had assumed it was innocence.
Now he realized it had been something else.
Stubbornness.
And that stubbornness had clearly not disappeared.
"Elena," he said quietly, "you're making a mistake."
She tilted her head slightly.
"By asking questions?"
"Yes."
"That's a strange thing to say to someone you invited into your world."
"I didn't invite you into it."
She gave him a small look.
"You brought me to the gala."
"That was different."
"And you asked me to perform."
"Yes."
"And you asked me to dinner."
Adrian exhaled slowly.
"Elena—"
"You can't pretend I appeared here by accident."
Her voice wasn't angry.
But it was firm.
And annoyingly reasonable.
Adrian leaned back slightly against the desk.
"You're right."
Elena waited.
"But that doesn't change the situation."
"And what situation is that?"
"The one where you walk away."
She stared at him for a moment.
Then she laughed quietly.
The sound caught him slightly off guard.
"You really don't know me very well," she said.
"I know enough."
"No," she replied. "You really don't."
She stepped closer to the desk.
"You think I'm going to see one strange situation and suddenly run away?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because most people would."
"Well I'm not most people."
That much was obvious.
Adrian studied her for a moment.
"You saw someone get hurt two nights ago."
"Yes."
"And that didn't change your mind?"
Elena's expression softened slightly.
"It scared me."
The honesty in her voice made him pause.
"But it also made me realize something."
"What?"
She looked around the office.
At the polished furniture.
The quiet luxury.
The view of the city.
"You live in two completely different worlds."
Adrian didn't deny it.
"One world is public," she continued.
"Elegant."
"Controlled."
"And the other one…"
She hesitated slightly.
"…is dangerous."
"Yes."
Elena met his eyes again.
"And you expect me to just ignore that?"
"It would be easier."
"For who?"
"For you."
She sighed.
"There you go again."
"What?"
"Deciding what's best for me."
Adrian's voice remained calm.
"That's my responsibility."
Elena frowned slightly.
"Since when?"
"Since you became involved."
Her eyes narrowed a little.
"Involved, how?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Because the real answer would sound far too personal.
Instead, he said something safer.
"You've been seen with me."
"That's a problem?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because people are watching."
Those words made her pause.
"Watching who?"
"You."
A faint chill ran down her spine.
"Why would anyone watch me?"
Adrian's voice lowered slightly.
"Because people assume that anything connected to me has value."
Elena stared at him.
"You're serious."
"Yes."
"So you're saying someone could target me just because I know you?"
"That's exactly what I'm saying."
The room fell quiet again.
For the first time since the conversation began, Elena looked slightly unsettled.
Adrian noticed.
"That's why I told you to walk away."
Elena slowly lowered her arms.
"I understand the danger."
"No, you don't."
"Yes, I do."
"Elena—"
She interrupted him gently.
"You're not the only person who can make decisions."
Her voice softened slightly.
"I know your world is dangerous."
"Yes."
"And I know you're trying to protect me."
Adrian's eyes sharpened slightly.
"You admit that."
"It's obvious."
Elena studied him carefully.
"But there's something you're forgetting."
"What?"
She took a small step closer.
"I didn't come here because I'm curious about your business."
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"Then why did you come?"
Her answer came quietly.
"I came because of you."
For a moment the air between them felt heavy.
Adrian didn't respond.
But Elena continued.
"You've spent the last few days pretending I don't exist."
"I was busy."
"You were hiding."
His jaw tightened slightly.
"I was thinking."
"About pushing me away."
"Yes."
She nodded slowly.
"That part was obvious."
Another silence followed.
Then Elena said something that surprised him again.
"You know what the strange thing is?"
"What?"
"The more you try to push me away…"
Her voice softened slightly.
"…the more it feels like you actually want me to stay."
Adrian held her gaze.
"That's not true."
Elena smiled faintly.
"You're a terrible liar."
"I'm not lying."
"Then prove it."
"How?"
"Tell me to leave."
Adrian frowned slightly.
"I already did."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You told me it was safer."
"That's the same thing."
"It's not."
Elena stepped back slightly, giving him space.
"If you really want me gone…"
She gestured toward the door.
"…say it clearly."
Adrian looked at her.
Really looked.
At the quiet determination in her eyes.
At the stubborn way she held her ground.
At the girl who had walked straight into his world and refused to be pushed out.
And for the first time since she arrived…
He hesitated.
Elena noticed immediately.
A small smile appeared on her face.
"That's what I thought."
Adrian's voice dropped slightly.
"You shouldn't be this persistent."
"And you shouldn't underestimate people."
They stood there for another moment.
Then Elena picked up her bag from the chair near the desk.
"I'll leave for now."
Adrian didn't react.
"But I'm not walking away."
She moved toward the door.
Just before leaving, she paused and looked back at him.
"One more thing."
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
Elena's smile returned slightly.
"You still haven't answered my original question."
"And what was that?"
She opened the door.
"What kind of world are you really living in?"
Then she stepped out into the hallway.
Leaving Adrian standing alone in the quiet office.
And for the first time in a long while…
He wasn't sure whether her refusal to leave was a problem.....
Or something far more dangerous.
Because the truth was becoming impossible to ignore.
The girl who refused to walk away…
Was quickly becoming the one person he couldn't force himself to let go of.
