Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: The Name That Shouldn't Exist

The mark did not fade.

Even as the night deepened—

Even as the villagers gathered at a distance—

No one dared step closer.

The symbol burned into the ground like a wound.

Unnatural.

Alive.

Sora stood over it, jaw tight, eyes sharp.

"…Yeah. This is getting real annoying."

Johan remained still beside him.

Silent.

Watching.

"…It's not just a message," Johan said quietly.

Sora glanced at him.

"…Then what?"

Johan's gaze didn't move.

"…It's a signature."

Silence fell.

Sora frowned.

"…You're saying this thing is showing off now?"

Johan nodded slightly.

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…And it wants us to recognize it."

Sora scoffed.

"…Well, I don't."

Johan slowly crouched—

this time—

his fingers brushing just above the mark.

The moment he got close—

A pulse.

Faint.

But there.

Johan's eyes narrowed.

"…There's a pattern in the aether flow."

Sora crossed his arms.

"…You getting all that just from staring at dirt?"

Johan ignored him.

"…It's controlled."

"…Deliberate."

A pause.

"…This isn't instinct."

His voice lowered.

"…This is intelligence."

Sora's expression hardened.

"…So we're not dealing with some wild monster anymore."

Johan stood.

"…We never were."

Silence.

Heavy.

Behind them—

"…Is it gone…?"

A villager's voice trembled.

Sora didn't look back.

"…If it wanted to kill all of you, you'd already be dead."

That didn't comfort anyone.

Johan turned slightly.

"…We need to find where it took the missing person."

The villagers hesitated.

Fear written across their faces.

But one of them stepped forward.

"…The trail… leads back to the forest."

Of course it did.

Sora exhaled sharply.

"…Figures."

Johan glanced once more at the mark.

Then—

"…We move now."

The forest welcomed them with silence.

Not the same as before.

This silence felt…

aware.

Watching.

Sora walked ahead this time.

No jokes.

No complaints.

Just focus.

"…It's leading us," he muttered.

Johan followed, eyes scanning everything.

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…And it wants us to follow."

The trail was clearer than expected.

Broken branches.

Dragged marks.

Faint traces of aether.

Almost like—

it was meant to be seen.

Sora clicked his tongue.

"…Cocky bastard."

They moved deeper.

Further than before.

Past the destroyed cave.

Past the place where the core once stood.

Into territory that felt—

wrong.

The air grew heavier.

Harder to breathe.

Johan stopped suddenly.

"…Do you feel that?"

Sora didn't slow down.

"…Yeah."

Flames flickered faintly around his hand.

"…Feels like something's watching."

A pause.

"…From everywhere."

Johan's gaze sharpened.

"…Stay alert."

The trees thinned.

Revealing a small clearing.

At the center—

something stood.

A figure.

Still.

Unmoving.

"…There," Sora said quietly.

Johan didn't respond.

His eyes were locked on it.

The air around the figure—

distorted.

Like aether itself bent unnaturally.

"…That's not normal," Johan whispered.

Sora stepped forward.

"…Hey."

No response.

"…You're the one behind this, right?"

Silence.

Then—

The figure moved.

Slowly.

Turning toward them.

And for the first time—

they saw him.

Human.

Mostly.

But wrong.

Veins of faint light ran beneath his skin—

like cracks.

His eyes—

glowed.

Not wildly.

Calmly.

Controlled.

"…You came," he said.

His voice—

steady.

Almost… normal.

Sora frowned.

"…Yeah. You've been causing a lot of trouble."

The figure tilted his head slightly.

"…Trouble?"

A faint smile.

"…No."

A pause.

"…This is progress."

Johan stepped forward.

"…You created those creatures."

Not a question.

A statement.

The figure nodded.

"…Yes."

Sora's grip tightened.

"…Why?"

The answer came without hesitation.

"…Because they are better."

Silence.

Cold.

Uncomfortable.

Johan's eyes narrowed.

"…Better than what?"

The figure's gaze shifted—

toward the village.

Far in the distance.

"…Humans."

Sora's expression darkened.

"…Yeah, I don't like you."

The figure looked back at them.

"…You're strong."

A pause.

"…Both of you."

His gaze lingered on Johan.

"…Especially you."

Johan didn't react.

"…You can feel it, can't you?"

Silence.

"…Aether…"

The air shifted.

"…It wants to be controlled."

For a moment—

something flickered behind the figure.

A shadow.

Not natural.

Gone in an instant.

Johan's eyes widened slightly—

just for a second.

"…What was that…?"

The figure didn't acknowledge it.

Instead—

"…Join me."

Sora blinked.

"…What?"

"…You don't belong with them," the figure continued.

"…You're different."

His gaze sharpened.

"…Like me."

Sora stepped forward—

flames igniting along his blade.

"…Yeah, no."

Johan raised a hand slightly.

"…Wait."

Sora glanced at him.

"…What?"

Johan's voice lowered.

"…There's something else."

A pause.

"…Something behind this."

The figure smiled faintly.

But said nothing.

Sora frowned.

"…What are you talking about?"

Johan didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed—

on the space behind the figure.

As if—

for just a moment—

he had felt something far worse.

Then—

it was gone.

"…Doesn't matter," Sora said.

He stepped forward—

flames surging.

"…You're hurting people."

A pause.

"…So I'm stopping you."

The figure's expression didn't change.

"…You can try."

The air trembled.

Aether gathered—

controlled.

Refined.

Deadly.

The forest held its breath.

And somewhere—

far beyond what either of them could see—

something watched.

Silent.

Interested.

The first clash—

was about to begin.
