Chapter 18 - Chapter 16: The Hidden Door

The storm refused to calm down.

Rain slammed against the old house like thousands of restless fists, and thunder rolled across the sky in deep, angry waves. Every flash of lightning lit up the dark hallway for a second before everything sank back into heavy silence.

Emma stood still, her heart beating fast.

Jay was standing near the doorway, half-hidden in the shadows. Water dripped slowly from his clothes, and his cold eyes were fixed on her.

"You want to go to the basement?" Jay said calmly.

"Then go."

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

"But remember… truth is not always something you can survive."

Emma's fingers trembled, but she didn't step back.

William Carter moved forward slowly.

"We don't have much time," he said in a low voice.

Adrian immediately stepped in front of Emma.

"And why should we trust you?" Adrian asked sharply.

William looked at him for a moment. His face looked pale under the lightning.

"Because if we don't go now," he replied quietly, "the truth will disappear forever."

Hena grabbed Emma's hand tightly.

"I'm scared," she whispered.

Emma took a deep breath.

"So am I," she said softly. "But we need to know what really happened."

Another loud thunder shook the house.

William turned toward the staircase that led down to the basement.

"Follow me."

The staircase was narrow and dark, almost like a mouth of darkness waiting to swallow them.

Adrian picked up a broken wooden stick from the floor.

"I'll go first," he said.

Emma nodded.

Behind them, Jay leaned against the wall and spoke in a quiet voice.

"Go ahead. I'll be right behind you."

There was something in his tone that made Emma's chest tighten.

It sounded like he was already sure of what they would find.

The wooden stairs creaked under their weight as they slowly walked down.

The air grew colder with every step.

A damp, rotten smell filled the basement.

William turned on a small flashlight, and a weak beam of light cut through the darkness.

The basement looked abandoned for years.

Old boxes were stacked in corners. Broken chairs lay on the ground. Dust covered everything like a thick blanket.

Hena held Emma's arm.

"This place feels wrong," she whispered.

Emma didn't reply.

Her eyes were fixed on the wall.

There was a picture hanging there.

Covered in dust.

She slowly walked toward it.

Her heart started beating faster.

She wiped the dust away with her hand.

And froze.

It was her father.

The picture showed her father smiling warmly, with a young Emma standing beside him.

Her chest tightened.

"Dad…"

A memory suddenly appeared in her mind.

She was small.

Her father was standing in this very basement, holding her hand.

"Emma," he had said with a gentle smile, "this house has secrets."

She had laughed.

"What kind of secrets?"

Her father had looked at the walls and said quietly,

"Secrets that should stay hidden… until the right time."

The memory faded.

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

Adrian walked closer.

"Are you okay?"

Emma nodded slowly.

"He brought me here once," she said. "He knew something."

William was standing near an old wooden box.

His hands were shaking slightly.

He opened it.

Inside were old papers, a diary, and a broken tape recorder.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Is this the recording?"

William froze.

For a moment, he didn't answer.

Then he shook his head.

"No."

Emma turned toward him.

"What do you mean no?"

William swallowed slowly.

"The original recording was here," he said. "But it's gone."

Hena gasped.

"Gone? Who took it?"

William didn't answer.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"You're hiding something."

William looked away.

Before he could speak—

Footsteps echoed from the stairs.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Everyone turned.

Jay was walking down slowly.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

"You're late," he said.

Emma clenched her fists.

"Where is the recording?"

Jay smiled faintly.

"Still searching for answers?"

Adrian stepped forward.

"Stop playing games, Jay."

Jay looked at him.

"This is not a game."

Then he turned his head toward the far corner of the basement.

"The truth is over there."

Everyone looked.

There was a part of the wall that looked different.

William's face suddenly turned pale.

"No…" he whispered.

Jay's smile grew slightly.

"Yes."

Emma slowly walked toward the wall.

Her heartbeat grew louder in her ears.

She touched the surface.

Dust fell off.

Her fingers traced the edges.

And she realized something.

This wasn't a wall.

It was a door.

A hidden door.

Adrian stepped closer.

"How did we never see this before?"

Jay spoke quietly.

"Because it was never meant to be seen."

Emma's hand trembled.

"What's inside?" she asked softly.

Jay looked directly into her eyes.

His voice became colder.

"Your father's final truth."

Thunder roared loudly above them.

The door shook slightly.

Emma slowly placed her hand on the handle.

Behind her, William suddenly shouted,

"Emma, don't open it!"

But it was too late.

The handle moved on its own.

The hidden door slowly creaked open.

Cold air rushed out from the darkness inside.

Emma's breath stopped.

Jay stepped closer and whispered,

"Now… the truth will finally come out."
