Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: A Skill Everyone Has

[Quest: Rescue Stray Devil Kuroka — Completed]

Reward: Skill — Bukujutsu (Sky Dancing Technique)

Skill Description: The signature technique of the Crane School. Move through the air by releasing internal "Ki."

Note: Modified to consume the user's energy; you can fly even without "Ki."

As the prompt faded, Rhode felt a new skill take root in his body. It was the basic flight technique from the Dragon Ball universe. In the early series, only Tien and Chiaotzu could use it, but by the middle of the show, it was a dime a dozen—everyone who was anyone knew how to do it.

It was a common skill, but incredibly useful. Rhode hadn't been able to fly before this. He had worried about facing enemies who stayed in the air and spammed long-range attacks; now, he didn't have to worry about being "kited."

With a single thought, Rhode felt his body break free from gravity's shackles, and he floated gracefully into the air.

Lavinia's eyes widened. She looked at Rhode, sensing no magical fluctuations. "What power is this? A human can fly without any external aid?"

In a world full of powerful races, humans were at a natural disadvantage. Their physical stats and abilities couldn't compare to gods or devils. While some humans were powerful—like the heroes of legend—they usually had divine backing. For someone like Rhode to achieve this without magic or external power was unheard of.

"Maybe I'm just a genius," Rhode said, shamelessly claiming the system reward as his own talent. "I figured it out myself."

"You two rest here for a bit. I'm going to take a look around."

Rhode soared into the sky. Humans have always been obsessed with flight, and Rhode was no exception. He mastered the Bukujutsu almost instantly. While he couldn't circle the globe in minutes like a Saiyan, he was at least at the average level of this world.

However, he quickly discovered a downside: flying at high speeds meant the wind hitting his face was painful, and it absolutely trashed his hair. After one lap, he had a perfect slicked-back look.

"I wonder how those guys keep their hair perfect while flying. Do they use a gallon of hair gel?"

After a few more laps to satisfy his craving, Rhode returned to the girls. Kuroka remained in cat form, curled up in Asia's arms. She gave a small meow of acknowledgement. At the very least, this human seemed trustworthy for now.

"Lavinia, can you set up a barrier to prevent energy leaks?" Rhode asked.

Flying had reminded him of his Longinus. Its basic ability was to capture and bind powerful souls to enhance its flames. He just happened to have three of them: Shuten-doji, Otakemaru, and Tamamo-no-Mae. He hadn't used them in Kyoto to avoid detection, but here, they were far enough away to risk it.

"I can, but what are you planning, Mr. Rhode?"

Rhode explained his intention. Lavinia's expression became incredibly complex. After a long pause, she spoke softly. "When I left the Okunoin, Suzaku said the treasures sealed in the altar were stolen. The remains of the Three Great Yokai, gold, jewelry, ancient books... all gone."

"I thought Sataniel's group did it. I didn't expect... the culprit was you."

"Suzaku even asked if I knew who did it. She suspected you, but I told her you weren't that kind of person..."

She sounded quite aggrieved.

"I don't like the sound of that," Rhode said without missing a beat. "What do you mean 'stole'? If I hadn't been there, Sataniel would have taken them. I was just 'mitigating the loss' for the Five Great Clans. If those remains fell into the hands of villains, the consequences would be dire. They might have even brought ruin to the clans!"

"They're much safer with me than in the Okunoin," he added shamelessly.

Lavinia stared at him for a long time. Mr. Rhode certainly has a thick skin to say something so high-sounding, she thought. But he wasn't entirely wrong; if Sataniel had gotten them, nothing good would have come of it.

"It'll take about ten minutes to set up the barrier. Please wait," Lavinia said. She found a clear spot, took out her staff, and began drawing a magic circle. She decided to make it a top-tier barrier.

Soon, a barrier covering a five-kilometer radius was active, cutting off all energy signatures. "It should last for five hours. Is that enough?"

"Plenty," Rhode nodded.

He signaled the others to step back and released his Longinus. The deep purple cross floated before him. He glanced at the panel and saw the Balance Breaker progress was already at 10%. At this rate, he'd have it unlocked in less than a week. Compared to any previous wielder, he was on a rocket ship. Even in the Hero Faction, most descendants only had a Sub-species Balance Breaker.

He took the wooden box containing the Yokai remains from his inventory. The moment they left the stasis of his storage, they began to stir.
