Compared to Raynare and Mittelt, her figure was exceptionally proud. Her black-and-red bodysuit outlined her voluptuous curves perfectly; even her "Mount Fuji" seemed to tremble as she spoke.
The ones gathered here were Raynare's fellow Fallen Angel companions, like Kalawarner. As for the Stray Exorcists, they were kept outside; unless summoned, they weren't allowed to face the Fallen Angels directly.
"Huh? Is that a thing? That would be too stupid," Mittelt said bluntly.
"Stop joking around. How often does that actually happen? If it did, human society would have collapsed by now!" Raynare snapped, her nerves frayed. She immediately shut down the negative talk.
"If this fails, I'm going back immediately! If the cadres find out we snuck out of Grigori and into Devil territory to cause trouble, we'll be severely punished! If that happens, I'm reporting you instantly to save my own skin~~~" Mittelt sat in a chair listlessly, completely unfazed by Raynare's mood.
"Same here," Kalawarner added, having lost her patience over the long wait. "Raynare, you need to understand that we only agreed to help. We aren't going to bet our entire lives on you."
Raynare felt a surge of anger at their comments. But just as she was about to snap back, she took a deep breath.
"Trust me, this can't fail. Once I have the Holy Maiden's Sacred Gear and we return to Grigori, my status will skyrocket. The higher-ups have always been obsessed with Sacred Gear research, haven't they? That girl's Gear is incredibly rare. If I get it, we won't be punished for leaving without permission."
"Once I enter the upper ranks, I'll pull you both up with me. We'll show those Fallen Angels who used to look down on us that there's nothing we can't do!"
"Mittelt, Kalawarner, we're just two-winged Fallen Angels at the bottom of the ladder in Grigori. If you want people to respect you, follow my lead!"
"When you rise to the top, you can show all those people who looked down on you how the tables have turned!"
"Do not underestimate the struggle of a Fallen Angel girl!"
Raynare then began painting a beautiful picture of their future in the upper ranks. Her combat power and planning might be debatable, but when it came to selling a "pie in the sky," Raynare was a pro. To ensure success, she had gathered three companions and a large group of Stray Exorcists, promising them various rewards to build this temporary team.
Mittelt and Kalawarner found themselves swayed. They were both common Fallen Angels from the bottom tier of Grigori, looked down upon by their colleagues for years. That was why they had agreed to Raynare's invitation in the first place.
"So don't worry," Raynare said. "As soon as we get the Gear, we go back."
Before coming to Kuoh Town, Raynare had sent scouts to live here for a few days. They knew the town was under Devil supervision. But after several days with no reaction from the local Lord, she had dared to move into the abandoned church and reconstruct the barrier beneath it.
"By the way, where's Dohnaseek?" Raynare asked. Dohnaseek was her third companion, but since arriving in the human world, he was rarely seen. He had a strange temperament; if she hadn't been desperate for help, she wouldn't have asked him.
Mittelt and Kalawarner shook their heads, indicating they didn't know. Why would two beautiful girls hang out with that creepy shut-in?
"Keep scouting. Until the Holy Maiden arrives, try not to cause a stir," Raynare sighed.
Just as the three were about to disperse, they heard a strange noise from above. A Fallen Angel's physical stats were several times those of a human, so their hearing was much sharper. They could sense the slightest movement.
Mittelt and Kalawarner looked at each other. "What's happening outside?"
"I don't know. Did the Devils here finally come knocking?" Raynare's heart tightened, but she decided to check it out.
They climbed the stairs back to the surface. Sunlight streamed through the holes in the abandoned church's roof—a warm, peaceful glow that would normally make one feel lazy. But as they emerged from the basement, the three were met with a scene of utter carnage at the church entrance.
A dozen Stray Exorcists were scattered everywhere, each with a bloody hole in their forehead, lying dead on the ground. Among the pile of silver-uniformed corpses was a face Raynare and the others knew all too well. It was a somber young man in a black robe, his face pale and lifeless. Like the exorcists, his aura was gone. His black wings—the symbol of a Fallen Angel—slumped uselessly on the floor. His body wasn't even cold yet.
"Wh... what is the meaning of this?" For a moment, faced with an incomprehensible situation, the three Fallen Angels stood frozen.
"Is it really the Devils?" Mittelt's voice trembled with fear.
"No," Raynare said grimly. "Devils don't use guns."
As she spoke, a male figure appeared in the doorway of the ruined church. The barrel of the firearm in his hand was still smoking. Given the scene, there was no mystery as to who the killer was.
"Who are you?!" Seeing it wasn't the local Devil Lord, Raynare felt a flash of relief before instantly switching to her battle form. Her leather, restraint-like suit hugged her curves, leaving little to the imagination.
When Rhode saw these three startled Fallen Angels "transform," he couldn't help but criticize them in his head. Fallen Angels really go all out, don't they? You call that a battle suit? That's just lingerie with extra steps.
"Surrender. If you're obedient, I might be merciful enough to let you live," Rhode said with a light laugh, putting his pistol away. Against supernatural races like Fallen Angels, ordinary firearms weren't very effective. He had a decent impression of Raynare; after all, when he watched the first episode years ago, he thought she was the main heroine.
