Chapter 32 - The first test

The night was heavy with tension, the kind that makes every shadow seem alive. I paced in the training room, still gripping the dagger, muscles sore from the lessons earlier in the day.

"Tonight," the Don said, his voice low and commanding, "they test us. And you, too."

My stomach tightened. "Me?" I asked, uncertain.

"Yes," he said, eyes dark and unwavering. "This is not just a lesson in defense. It's a test of instinct, awareness… survival. They think they can get to you. Let's see if they can."

The guards moved out, strategically positioning themselves around the mansion, while the Don led me to a side corridor—a place I'd never noticed before. "They'll try distractions first," he explained. "Stay alert. Move only when necessary. Watch, learn… act."

Minutes later, the first sign appeared: a shadow slipped through the gardens, scaling a low wall, moving with careful precision. My heart pounded, adrenaline surging through me as I remembered his lessons.

"Now," he whispered, and I lunged, dagger in hand.

The intruder froze, surprised, as I struck—not perfectly, but effectively enough to make them stumble. The Don moved like a phantom behind me, neutralizing the threat instantly.

"You see?" he said, pressing close, hand brushing mine. "You're capable. You just needed the opportunity to see it."

I caught my breath, the thrill of the moment mixed with fear. "I—I did it," I whispered, disbelief in my voice.

"Yes," he said, eyes glinting with pride and possessiveness. "And next time, it won't just be practice. They'll come for real, and you'll be ready. Together, we'll stop them."

The rest of the night passed with small skirmishes—intruders testing our defenses, but we were ready, moving as one. By the time the sun began to rise, I realized something crucial: I was no longer helpless. I was no longer just protected. I was a part of this dangerous world, and I could fight—and survive—alongside him.

The Don pulled me close as the first light of dawn seeped through the windows. "You're mine," he murmured, possessive yet tender. "And you've proven tonight… nothing, no one, will take you from me."

I leaned into him, heart pounding, knowing the battles ahead would be fiercer, darker… but also knowing that together, we could face anything.
