Chapter 42 - Adjusting to us

The mansion felt different now. Less like a fortress, more like a home. Even the halls that had once echoed with danger now seemed to breathe softly around me.

I wandered through the rooms, tracing my fingers along familiar surfaces, remembering the chaos that had once ruled this place. It was hard to believe that only days ago, I had feared for my life at every turn.

Footsteps echoed behind me.

"I see you're exploring," he said, his voice quiet but carrying that familiar command.

I turned, a small smile playing on my lips. "Just… seeing what it feels like to be safe."

His dark eyes softened. "You are safe. I promise."

I wanted to believe him completely, to let the fear slip away like the morning mist. "It's… strange. I never thought I'd have this."

He stepped closer, brushing a hand across my shoulder. "You've earned it," he said simply. "Every step you survived, every danger you faced — it brought you here."

We walked together through the quiet halls, words unnecessary, the silence between us filled with understanding.

Later, I found myself in the garden, sunlight warming my face. He joined me, handing over a cup of tea without a word.

We drank in companionable silence, watching the roses sway gently in the breeze.

"You know," he said finally, voice low, "I used to think that controlling everything meant I could protect it. But… I see now that being here, with you, means trusting you too."

I looked up at him, surprised. Vulnerability — a rare thing for him — softened his usually stern features.

"I trust you," I said, my own voice barely above a whisper.

He studied me, then nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Then we're even," he murmured.

For the first time, I realized it wasn't about surviving danger or battles. It was about living in moments like this, quiet and unthreatened, with someone who had once ruled my life and now shared it instead.

And though the world beyond the mansion might still hold shadows, here… we had found a fragile kind of peace.
