Chapter 26 - Threads of fate - chapter 26

The morning sunlight streamed through the tall, stained-glass windows of the orphanage chapel, scattering fragments of color across the worn stone floor.

Most of the children were already in the courtyard, playing games under the watchful eyes of the nuns, but Ostina lingered near the back pews, her small hands resting on the cool wood. Her teal eyes were sharp, calculating—already mapping the day in her mind.

Today, she would need more than stealth. The head priest, Father Benedict, had announced a sudden inspection of the storage rooms and supply closets. Any ordinary child would panic, but Ostina saw opportunity.

She slipped quietly from the chapel, her footsteps as soft as falling dust. The corridors were alive with activity: the clatter of dishes, the hum of the laundry room, the distant scolding of a nun. Every sound was a signal, every distraction a potential shield for her movements.

The first challenge awaited in the kitchen.

Two nuns were reorganizing pots and pans, their chatter masking Ostina's subtle approach. She let a shard of mana lift a small basket of dried herbs, sliding it beneath the folds of her cloak.

A flash of her shadow thread nudged the handle of the cupboard shut with barely a whisper.

From there, she moved to the attic crawlspace. Her hidden stash had grown, but it was starting to crowd the space beneath the floorboard. She worked carefully, levitating items to rearrange them into neat layers.

Cloth rolls, ropes, small knives, candles—all organized with precise logic. Even in darkness, she could feel the flow of her mana guiding her hands.

A sudden noise froze her: the sound of a door opening upstairs.

A shadow moved across the wall. Ostina's breath slowed, her mind racing. She let her form blur slightly, threads of shadow curling around her, making her indistinct.

"Where is that girl?" a voice hissed—sharp, suspicious. Sister Mirabel.

Ostina stayed perfectly still. Her tiny body seemed to vanish against the dim wood.

Mirabel's footsteps passed directly overhead, the soft creak of the floorboards almost covering Ostina's heartbeat. Once the danger had passed, she exhaled slowly and returned to her work.

By afternoon, her preparations were nearly complete.

But Ostina knew patience was key. She could not act until everything was in place, until every stray possibility had been accounted for.

Her mind wandered briefly to the whispers she had overheard in the chapel:

rumors of new assessments for potential saints, stricter than ever. Those who failed might be sent to harsher institutions—or worse.

The Church did not tolerate weakness. Yet, weakness had always been her disguise. Every mockery, every slight, every scornful glance was a tool she could use to sharpen her mind, refine her craft, and prepare for the moment when the orphanage itself would become her stage.

Night fell, draping the halls in quiet shadow. Ostina curled beneath her blanket once more, her shards of mana swirling faintly around her fingers. She allowed herself a small, satisfied smile.

They think they have me cornered. They think I am powerless.

They see nothing. They suspect nothing.

And soon… everything will be ready.

The threads she had woven over

weeks—

silent, invisible, precise—

were now poised to shift the balance of the orphanage in her favor. One misstep by the nuns, one careless glance by a child, and the dominoes would begin to fall.

The "Trash Saint" was no longer just surviving.

She was becoming inevitable.

The game was nearing its next move.

And Ostina…

she always played to win.
