Chapter 38 - Chapter 37 - Unexpected Ally

The mansion was unusually quiet that evening. Only the faint hum of the air conditioning and the occasional clink of glasses from the distant study broke the silence. I wandered through the hallways, my heels clicking softly against the marble floors, until I found myself outside the training room.

Inside, Luca was moving with controlled precision, his fists pounding a punching bag with a rhythm that was almost hypnotic. The sound reverberated through the room, steady and purposeful, echoing the discipline that ran through this household. I hesitated at the door, unsure if I should interrupt. It was late. He was focused. And yet… I needed answers.

He paused mid-strike, swinging the bag one last time before stepping back and wiping the sweat from his brow. When he looked up and saw me, a faint flicker of surprise crossed his face—but he quickly masked it with his usual calm. "Elena," he said, voice low but steady.

"Hi," I murmured, stepping inside. The room smelled faintly of leather and sweat, a strangely comforting scent in a world where danger lurked behind every corner.

"You've been asking a lot of questions," Luca said, leaning casually against a punching bag. His posture was relaxed, but there was an intensity in his eyes that made me feel like he could read every thought I had. "About Dante. About… the past."

I nodded, hesitating for a moment. "I can't help it. I need to understand him. And… I need to understand this world. I feel like I'm constantly on the edge, and I don't even know what's waiting for me."

He studied me for a long moment, his gaze sharp yet not unkind. Then he let out a long sigh, running a hand through his dark hair. "Curiosity can be dangerous," he said finally, "but in your position… it's also necessary."

I frowned. "Curiosity? Dangerous?"

"Yes," he said simply. "Knowing things before acting… seeing the patterns before stepping into them… it can save your life. Or someone else's." He paused, his expression darkening. "Especially when betrayal has already cost someone dearly."

My chest tightened. His words were vague, but the weight behind them hit me harder than I expected. "Betrayal?" I whispered. "By… who?"

Luca shook his head, the lines of his jaw tense. "I can't say. Not yet. It's dangerous. Dante… he doesn't forgive easily. And whoever hurt him—left a scar that still runs deep."

The room felt smaller suddenly, like the walls were pressing in. I swallowed hard. "When did it happen?"

"Years ago," he said, voice dropping. "And it wasn't a small betrayal. It changed him. Made him… the man you see now. Cold, controlled, ruthless. But it also made him capable of protecting… what he values."

I stared at him, piecing it together in my mind. Isabella… It had to be her. But Luca wasn't confirming anything. He was careful. Protective, somehow, of Dante's secrets.

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked quietly. "Shouldn't I just stay out of it?"

He leaned closer, lowering his voice to a near whisper. "Because I see something in you. Something Dante hasn't… fully noticed yet. You're cautious, but you act when it counts. You notice things others don't. You think before you move. That's rare in this world."

I felt a strange mix of pride and fear. Pride, because someone had seen me, recognized my potential. Fear, because I had no idea what I was supposed to do with this knowledge.

"Most people here… they only react," Luca continued, pacing slowly now, eyes never leaving mine. "They're loyal when it's convenient. They fight when it's expected. You… you're different. You question. You observe. You calculate."

I blinked, trying to absorb his words. "And that's… good?"

"It can be," he said, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "But it can also make you a target. Curiosity is a double-edged sword in Dante's world. Knowing too much too soon… it can be dangerous."

I took a deep breath, my mind racing. I had felt it—the invisible strings, the constant threat—but hearing it articulated this clearly sent a shiver down my spine. "I… I understand," I murmured. "I'll be careful."

"Good," he said, leaning back against the punching bag again. "But remember this—knowledge is power. Even here, even with Dante. You may not realize it yet, but understanding what's around you, who's moving behind the scenes… it could save your life. Or someone else's. You'll need it soon."

I felt the weight of his words settle over me, heavy and foreboding. And then he surprised me, just slightly, by adding, "And one more thing… trust is a luxury you can't afford. Even here."

I swallowed hard, feeling the truth in that statement. Trust… Dante's world thrived on loyalty, but betrayal was always lurking nearby. I couldn't even fully trust the walls I walked past, let alone the people in them.

For a moment, we stood there in silence. I thought about the clues I had found in Dante's office, the files I had seen, and the shadow of a woman who had betrayed him long ago. Isabella. That name haunted me, though I had only glimpsed it in fragments, hidden in the papers I wasn't supposed to touch.

"You're learning fast," Luca said suddenly, breaking the silence. His tone was softer now, almost approving. "Most people would have panicked or asked too many questions too soon. You… you handle things differently. Carefully."

I nodded, though my stomach churned with unease. Carefully didn't mean safe. Not in Dante's world. Not when betrayal had already left scars on the people around me.

"And one last warning," he added, his eyes serious again. "You're not alone, Elena. But don't assume that means you're protected. Allies can turn into enemies in a blink. Watch closely. Listen more. And remember—sometimes the smallest clue is the one that keeps you alive."

I left the training room with a storm of thoughts swirling in my mind. Luca had given me a key—a fragment of understanding in a world I was only beginning to navigate. He hadn't confirmed anything about Isabella, but his words made the danger tangible.

As I walked down the hallway, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was always watching. Dante. Isabella's shadow. The rival family. And now, with Luca's warning lingering in my mind, I realized that in this world, even those who seemed loyal had reasons that were hidden from me.

I paused outside my room, glancing back down the hall toward the training room. Luca was still there, silent and vigilant, his presence oddly comforting in a way I hadn't expected. Perhaps I wasn't completely alone after all. Not with someone watching, someone who understood the stakes.

But one truth remained crystal clear: curiosity could kill in Dante's world. And yet, it was the only weapon I had against the darkness creeping ever closer.

I closed the door behind me, the echo of Luca's words lingering in my mind. Knowledge was power. Trust was a luxury. And this world I had been thrown into was more dangerous than I had ever imagined.
