Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 — The Investors’ Table

The restaurant did not have a sign.

It didn't need one.

The car stopped in front of a narrow stone building on the edge of the financial district. From the outside it looked almost ordinary. Inside, it smelled like polished wood, expensive wine, and people who made decisions that changed other people's lives.

Alex stepped out of the car and looked up at the building.

"This place looks quiet."

Adrian adjusted his jacket.

"It is."

"That worries me."

They walked inside.

A host in a dark suit greeted Adrian immediately.

"Mr. Laurent. Your guests have arrived."

Alex leaned closer to Adrian.

"That was fast."

"They arrived early."

Alex sighed.

"Of course they did."

They followed the host through a hallway lined with dim lights and heavy wooden doors. The restaurant was almost silent. No loud conversations. No clinking glasses. Just quiet wealth and quiet power.

The host opened the final door.

The private dining room was small.

Only one table.

Three people already seated.

They stood when Adrian entered.

Alex noticed the way they looked at him before they looked at Adrian.

Curiosity.

Calculation.

The kind of attention that weighed more than questions.

"Adrian," said the first man.

Tall. Thin. Gray hair.

"Robert," Adrian replied.

They shook hands.

The second man nodded politely.

"Good to see you."

The third person was a woman.

Sharp eyes.

Older than the others.

She studied Alex directly.

"And this must be Alex Carter."

Alex nodded.

"Still me."

She smiled faintly.

"Good."

Everyone sat.

Alex took the chair beside Adrian.

A waiter appeared silently and poured water.

Then disappeared.

Robert folded his hands on the table.

"Well."

He looked at Alex again.

"You've caused quite a disturbance."

Alex shrugged.

"I try not to."

The woman across the table spoke.

"That's not what the markets say."

Alex leaned back slightly.

"The markets seem dramatic."

She nodded once.

"That's accurate."

The second man cleared his throat.

"We'll speak directly."

Adrian nodded.

"Good."

The man continued.

"Victor Moreau is pushing the narrative that Laurent International is becoming unstable."

Alex sighed quietly.

"Of course he is."

Robert looked at him.

"You don't seem worried."

Alex took a sip of water.

"I'm learning that worrying doesn't slow Victor down."

The woman studied him.

"That's true."

Robert turned to Adrian.

"The port incident last night."

"Yes."

"You blocked his shipment."

"Yes."

Robert nodded slowly.

"That stabilized the corridor."

Alex glanced at Adrian.

"You say that like it was routine."

Adrian didn't respond.

The second man leaned forward.

"But the question isn't the port."

Alex crossed his arms.

"I suspected that."

The man looked directly at him.

"The question is you."

There it was.

Alex didn't look surprised.

"Fair."

The woman spoke calmly.

"You appeared beside Adrian Laurent very suddenly."

Alex nodded.

"That's how marriage works sometimes."

Robert almost smiled.

"Humor won't help you here."

Alex shrugged.

"It helps me."

The room went quiet for a moment.

Robert leaned back.

"Victor believes you are Adrian's weakness."

Alex glanced at Adrian.

Then back at the table.

"That seems to be a popular theory."

The second man asked,

"Is it wrong?"

Alex tilted his head.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On whether you think emotions are weaknesses."

The woman watched him carefully.

"That's not an answer."

Alex smiled slightly.

"It is if you're asking the wrong question."

Robert tapped the table lightly.

"And what is the right question?"

Alex leaned forward a little.

"The right question is whether Adrian Laurent changes his decisions because of me."

Silence.

The three investors looked at Adrian.

Adrian met their eyes.

"No."

Robert nodded slowly.

"That's the answer we expected."

The woman wasn't finished.

"But expectations aren't evidence."

Alex sighed.

"This again."

She looked at him.

"You understand the concern."

"Yes."

"You entered the most powerful corporate conflict in the region overnight."

Alex nodded.

"That part surprised me too."

Robert asked Adrian,

"Does he understand the scale of this war?"

Adrian answered calmly.

"Yes."

Alex glanced at him.

"That's generous."

The second man leaned back.

"Victor's argument is simple."

Alex raised an eyebrow.

"I'm sure it is."

The man continued.

"He believes Adrian Laurent built his empire by eliminating emotional variables."

Alex laughed softly.

"That sounds exactly like him."

Robert didn't smile.

"And you reintroduce one."

Alex folded his arms.

"That assumes I'm emotional."

The woman raised an eyebrow.

"Aren't you?"

Alex considered the question.

"Sometimes."

She nodded.

"Then Victor might be correct."

Alex looked at Adrian briefly.

Then back at the table.

"You know what Victor doesn't understand?"

Robert asked,

"What?"

Alex's voice stayed calm.

"He thinks Adrian protects me because he cares."

The room went quiet.

Robert frowned slightly.

"And?"

Alex leaned back.

"He protects me because it annoys Victor."

For a moment no one spoke.

Then the second man laughed.

Short. Surprised.

"That's… plausible."

The woman studied Adrian carefully.

"Is it true?"

Adrian answered simply.

"Yes."

Alex looked at him.

"That was too fast."

Robert nodded slowly.

"Interesting."

The tension in the room shifted slightly.

The investors exchanged glances.

The second man spoke again.

"Victor believes you will eventually influence Adrian's judgment."

Alex shrugged.

"That would require him to listen to me."

Robert looked at Adrian.

"Does he?"

Adrian answered calmly.

"No."

Alex smiled.

"See?"

The woman rested her hands on the table.

"You're confident."

Alex nodded.

"I grew up around worse arguments than this."

Robert looked at him carefully.

"That's becoming clear."

The waiter returned quietly with food.

Plates appeared.

Glasses filled.

For a few minutes the conversation paused.

Then the woman spoke again.

"Victor made one more argument."

Alex sighed.

"I was hoping we were done with him."

Robert shook his head.

"Not yet."

Alex took a bite of food.

"Alright."

Robert continued.

"He says Adrian Laurent built his empire by cutting away everything that slowed him down."

Alex nodded.

"That sounds accurate."

Robert leaned forward.

"And he believes you will slow him down."

Alex set his fork down.

"Probably."

The room went still.

The woman narrowed her eyes slightly.

"That's a strange answer."

Alex shrugged.

"People slow people down."

Robert studied him.

"Then why should we trust this situation?"

Alex looked at Adrian.

Then back at the investors.

"Because Adrian Laurent is still Adrian Laurent."

Robert said nothing.

Alex continued.

"If he ever becomes weak…"

He shrugged.

"…you'll all replace him anyway."

Silence.

Then the second man laughed again.

Louder this time.

"That's brutally honest."

Alex picked up his fork again.

"I find honesty efficient."

The woman looked at Adrian.

"He may be a complication."

Adrian didn't respond.

She nodded slowly.

"But he's not fragile."

Robert leaned back in his chair.

"And Victor underestimated him."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's becoming a theme."

The second man raised his glass slightly.

"To complications."

Alex lifted his water glass.

"I'll drink to that."

Robert looked at Adrian.

"For now, our position remains unchanged."

Adrian nodded.

"Good."

The woman added,

"But Victor will escalate."

Alex sighed.

"He always does."

Robert stood.

The others followed.

The meeting was over.

They shook hands.

As the investors left the room, the woman paused beside Alex.

"You handled that well."

Alex shrugged.

"I talked."

"Yes."

She looked toward Adrian.

"Be careful with him."

Alex frowned.

"With me?"

She nodded.

"Victor may not be the only one testing this marriage."

Then she left.

The door closed.

The room fell quiet again.

Alex looked at Adrian.

"Well."

Adrian waited.

"That went better than expected."

"Yes."

Alex stood and stretched slightly.

"You know what I learned today?"

Adrian asked,

"What?"

Alex smiled faintly.

"Your world is full of people who pretend not to care about emotions."

Adrian watched him.

"And?"

Alex walked toward the door.

"They care very much."

He opened it.

"Which means Victor's still wrong about one thing."

Adrian followed him into the hallway.

"What?"

Alex glanced back.

"I'm not your weakness."

The quiet corridor stretched ahead.

And somewhere else in the city—

Victor Moreau was preparing his next move.
