Chapter 45 - Chapter 45 — The Vote Begins

Morning arrived slowly.

Gray light spread across the city like a thin layer of fog over glass towers.

Alex stood in the penthouse kitchen holding a cup of coffee he hadn't touched.

The vote would begin in two hours.

The city already knew.

Every financial channel was talking about Laurent International.

Victor Moreau's takeover.

The Meridian Alliance.

Markets reacting.

Investors speculating.

Alex watched the skyline and exhaled slowly.

"Today's going to be interesting."

Behind him, Adrian entered the kitchen.

Already dressed.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

"You're awake early."

Alex glanced over his shoulder.

"Sleep seemed unnecessary."

Adrian poured coffee.

"You slept two hours."

Alex shrugged.

"That's generous."

Adrian didn't respond.

Alex studied him.

"You're not nervous."

"No."

Alex laughed quietly.

"You really are impossible."

Adrian leaned against the counter.

"The vote is simple."

Alex raised an eyebrow.

"That's not how this feels."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex continued.

"Victor spent two days buying influence."

"Yes."

"He convinced the alliance."

"Yes."

Alex crossed his arms.

"And he walked into the boardroom like he already owned the company."

Adrian nodded once.

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That confidence is expensive."

Adrian didn't respond.

The elevator chimed.

Elena stepped into the penthouse holding her tablet.

"Morning."

Alex raised his cup.

"That's debatable."

Elena walked closer.

"The markets opened early."

Alex frowned.

"That's unusual."

Elena turned the tablet toward them.

Stock charts filled the screen.

Laurent International's price had climbed overnight.

Alex blinked.

"Well."

Adrian studied the numbers.

"How much?"

Elena answered calmly.

"Another nine percent."

Alex leaned back slowly.

"That's aggressive."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Alex rubbed his chin.

"You know what that means."

Adrian waited.

"Victor just made his own takeover harder."

Adrian said quietly,

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's poetic."

Elena continued scrolling.

"There's more."

Alex sighed.

"I hate that sentence."

Elena pointed at another chart.

Alex leaned closer.

"Well."

Adrian asked calmly,

"What now?"

Elena spoke quietly.

"Two investors sold their shares this morning."

Alex blinked.

"To Victor?"

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Alex frowned.

"Then who bought them?"

Elena turned the tablet toward Adrian.

"Laurent International."

Alex laughed softly.

"That's clever."

Adrian didn't respond.

Alex continued.

"You're buying your own company."

Adrian answered calmly.

"Yes."

Alex leaned back again.

"Well."

"That complicates Victor's math."

Elena nodded.

"It slows his progress."

Alex studied the chart again.

"Does he know."

Adrian said quietly,

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's even better."

The room fell silent.

Outside the windows, the city moved through its morning routine.

Cars.

Trains.

People rushing to offices.

None of them knowing a billion-dollar battle was about to reach its climax.

Alex finished his coffee and set the cup down.

"You know what Victor is doing right now."

Adrian waited.

"He's calling investors."

Adrian nodded once.

"Yes."

Alex crossed his arms.

"He's trying to lock down those last votes."

Elena checked the tablet again.

"Three investors still undecided."

Alex nodded slowly.

"The same three."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex continued.

"That's where this ends."

Elena looked at him.

"You're confident."

Alex shrugged.

"I'm curious."

Adrian watched him carefully.

Alex smiled faintly.

"You ever notice something about investors."

Adrian asked,

"What?"

Alex leaned against the counter.

"They hate drama."

Elena nodded slowly.

"That's true."

Alex continued.

"And Victor just turned this into a global show."

Adrian said quietly,

"Yes."

Alex shrugged.

"So those undecided investors…"

He smiled faintly.

"…are probably very uncomfortable right now."

The elevator chimed again.

A security officer stepped into the penthouse.

"Mr. Laurent."

Adrian turned.

"The board is assembling."

Alex nodded slowly.

"Showtime."

One Hour Later

The boardroom was louder than yesterday.

Phones vibrating.

Whispers between investors.

Screens showing market updates.

Alex sat beside Adrian watching everything carefully.

Halpern stood at the head of the table.

"We'll begin shortly."

Alex glanced at the large screen.

Victor's acquisition offer still glowed across it.

Thirty percent above market value.

Alex leaned back.

"Still expensive."

Adrian didn't respond.

The door opened.

Victor Moreau walked into the room again.

Same calm expression.

Same confident posture.

Alex smiled faintly.

"There he is."

Victor took his seat across the table.

"Good morning."

No one answered.

Halpern cleared his throat.

"The shareholder vote begins now."

The room fell silent.

Elena tapped her tablet.

The voting screen appeared on the monitors.

Names.

Share percentages.

Digital confirmation.

Alex watched carefully.

The first votes appeared.

Two board members supported Adrian.

Another supported Victor.

Alex leaned back slightly.

"Well."

Adrian remained calm.

More votes appeared.

Support shifted slowly across the screen.

Alex studied the numbers.

"Close."

Victor watched the screen with complete confidence.

That was the interesting part.

Alex leaned toward Adrian.

"He still thinks he's winning."

Adrian didn't answer.

The next vote appeared.

Support for Adrian increased slightly.

Victor's expression didn't change.

Another vote.

Support for Victor.

Alex rubbed his chin.

"That's uncomfortable."

Halpern checked the numbers.

"Three investors remain."

The room went quiet again.

Alex looked at the screen.

Three undecided names.

The same ones Elena had mentioned.

Victor leaned back slightly.

Completely calm.

Alex watched him carefully.

"You're confident."

Victor glanced at him.

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's impressive."

Victor said nothing.

The next vote appeared.

One of the undecided investors.

The screen flashed.

Support for Adrian.

Alex exhaled slowly.

"Well."

Victor didn't react.

Halpern looked at the screen.

"Two remain."

The room felt smaller now.

Alex leaned forward slightly.

"This is where Victor starts sweating."

Adrian didn't respond.

The next vote appeared.

Support for Victor.

The numbers shifted again.

Alex leaned back.

"Alright."

Halpern studied the screen.

"One investor left."

Silence filled the room.

Alex looked at the final name on the screen.

The investor he had met years ago.

Victor folded his hands.

Still confident.

Alex smiled faintly.

"You know what I like about arrogant men."

Victor glanced at him.

"What?"

Alex leaned back in his chair.

"They never see the last move coming."

The screen flashed.

The final vote appeared.

Support for Adrian Laurent.

The room froze.

Halpern stared at the numbers.

Then he cleared his throat.

"The acquisition vote has failed."

Silence.

Alex exhaled slowly.

"Well."

Adrian remained calm.

Victor didn't move.

For several seconds he simply stared at the screen.

Then he leaned back in his chair.

Alex studied him carefully.

"You alright?"

Victor looked at him.

His expression remained controlled.

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's impressive."

Victor stood slowly.

"This isn't finished."

Alex nodded.

"I assumed."

Victor looked at Adrian.

"You won the vote."

Adrian said nothing.

Victor continued.

"But the war isn't over."

Alex leaned back again.

"It never is."

Victor walked toward the door.

Before leaving he glanced at Alex.

"You're enjoying this."

Alex smiled faintly.

"I enjoy good endings."

Victor shook his head slightly.

"This isn't the ending."

Then he left.

The door closed quietly behind him.

The boardroom remained silent.

Alex leaned back in his chair and stretched.

"Well."

Adrian looked at him.

"Well what?"

Alex smiled faintly.

"That was a very expensive mistake."
