Chapter 55 - Chapter 55 — The Meeting of Rivals

The restaurant overlooked the harbor.

Tall windows stretched from the floor to the ceiling, showing rows of cargo ships moving slowly through the gray water.

Alex stood near the entrance watching the room carefully.

Quiet music.

Soft lights.

Private tables.

The kind of place where powerful men made dangerous decisions.

"Well," he muttered.

Elena stood beside him.

"This was his idea."

Alex nodded.

"That makes sense."

Across the room, Victor Moreau sat at a table near the window.

Perfect suit.

Calm posture.

A glass of water untouched beside him.

Alex studied him for a moment.

"You know what I like about Victor."

Elena frowned.

"I'm afraid to ask."

Alex shrugged.

"He commits."

Elena didn't respond.

The door opened behind them.

Adrian stepped inside.

The room seemed to shift slightly when he entered.

Same calm confidence.

Same controlled expression.

Alex smiled faintly.

"Now the fun begins."

They walked toward Victor's table.

Victor stood when Adrian approached.

"Good evening."

Adrian nodded once.

"Yes."

Alex pulled out a chair and sat down beside them.

"Well."

Victor glanced at him.

"You're attending."

Alex shrugged.

"I'm curious."

Victor almost smiled.

Elena sat beside Alex.

The waiter poured water and disappeared quickly.

Silence settled over the table.

Outside the window, ships moved slowly across the harbor.

Victor finally spoke.

"You considered the offer."

Adrian answered calmly.

"Yes."

Victor waited.

Alex leaned back slightly.

"You're both terrible at small talk."

Victor ignored him.

Adrian said quietly,

"It's risky."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Alex crossed his arms.

"That's an understatement."

Victor continued speaking.

"Which is why it works."

Adrian said nothing.

Victor leaned slightly forward.

"Two rivals controlling the same empire…"

He paused.

"…changes the market."

Alex nodded slowly.

"That's true."

Elena frowned.

"It also creates instability."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

Elena waited.

Victor finished calmly.

"It creates balance."

Alex laughed softly.

"That's a very diplomatic word."

Victor didn't respond.

His attention stayed on Adrian.

"You know the numbers."

Adrian said nothing.

Victor continued.

"The alliance controls shipping routes you don't."

Alex nodded.

"That's accurate."

Victor gestured slightly.

"And Laurent International controls infrastructure the alliance needs."

Adrian remained calm.

Alex leaned back.

"That's mutual dependence."

Victor looked at him.

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"Which is the foundation of every uncomfortable partnership."

Elena crossed her arms.

"What stops Victor from turning on us later."

Victor answered immediately.

"Profit."

Alex laughed softly.

"That answer again."

Victor didn't react.

Adrian finally spoke.

"You attempted a takeover."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian continued.

"You attacked the market."

"Yes."

Adrian watched him carefully.

"And now you want cooperation."

Victor remained calm.

"Yes."

Alex rubbed his chin.

"You know what the strange part is."

Victor glanced at him.

"What."

Alex shrugged.

"This actually makes sense."

Elena sighed.

"You're encouraging this again."

Alex smiled faintly.

"I'm observing."

Victor leaned slightly forward.

"Laurent International becomes stronger with the alliance."

Adrian said nothing.

Victor continued.

"And the alliance becomes stronger with Laurent infrastructure."

Alex nodded.

"That's correct."

Victor looked directly at Adrian.

"This isn't friendship."

Adrian said quietly.

"No."

Victor nodded once.

"It's power."

Silence filled the table again.

Outside the window, a cargo ship passed slowly through the harbor.

Alex watched it for a moment.

"You know what this really is."

Victor looked at him.

"What."

Alex smiled faintly.

"A cold war treaty."

Victor almost smiled.

Adrian remained calm.

Elena shook her head.

"That doesn't make this safe."

Alex shrugged.

"Safe is boring."

Victor looked at Adrian.

"You'll still control the company."

Adrian said nothing.

Victor continued.

"I'm asking for influence."

Alex crossed his arms.

"That's a very polite way to describe power."

Victor didn't deny it.

Adrian asked quietly.

"What form."

Victor answered immediately.

"A joint venture."

Alex leaned forward.

"Well."

Victor continued.

"Laurent International and the Meridian Alliance create a shared shipping corridor."

Elena frowned.

"That's massive."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Alex smiled slowly.

"That's not a partnership."

Victor looked at him.

"No?"

Alex finished calmly.

"That's a new empire."

Silence settled over the table again.

Adrian studied Victor carefully.

"You trust this arrangement."

Victor answered calmly.

"I trust incentives."

Alex laughed softly.

"That's very capitalist."

Victor ignored him.

Adrian remained silent for several seconds.

Alex watched his face carefully.

"You're deciding."

Adrian didn't answer.

Victor waited patiently.

Finally Adrian spoke.

"One condition."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian continued.

"The alliance withdraws all takeover support."

Victor said nothing.

Then he nodded.

"Done."

Elena blinked.

"That fast."

Victor shrugged slightly.

"The takeover failed."

Alex leaned back.

"That's surprisingly reasonable."

Victor continued.

"And another condition."

Adrian watched him.

"What."

Victor said calmly.

"The market war ends."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's also reasonable."

Adrian remained quiet.

The harbor outside grew darker as evening approached.

Ships moved slowly across the water.

Finally Adrian nodded once.

"We'll try it."

Silence filled the table.

Alex blinked.

"Well."

Victor leaned back slightly.

"Good."

Elena looked uneasy.

"This is happening."

Alex smiled faintly.

"Yes."

Victor raised his glass.

"To cooperation."

Adrian didn't raise his.

Alex picked up his water instead.

"Well," he said quietly.

Victor looked at him.

"Yes?"

Alex smiled faintly.

"This is either the smartest deal you've ever made…"

He paused.

"…or the beginning of the most expensive betrayal in business history."

Victor almost smiled again.

Outside the window, the harbor lights flickered across the dark water.

Two enemies.

One empire.

And a partnership that could either reshape the market…

or burn it to the ground.
