Chapter 59 - CHAPTER 59 — VICTOR'S GAME

Low light filled the hotel bar.

Glass shelves reflected rows of bottles.

Rain tapped against the tall windows.

A piano played somewhere near the back.

Victor Moreau sat at the corner table.

A single lamp stood above the table.

A glass rested near his hand.

Ice touched the side of the glass.

The door opened.

Cold air moved across the room.

Alex Ward stepped inside.

Water darkened the shoulders of his coat.

The door closed behind him.

The rain grew distant again.

Alex scanned the room.

His eyes found Victor.

Victor lifted his glass once.

Alex walked across the floor.

Shoes struck the wood with slow rhythm.

He reached the table.

"You chose a quiet place."

Alex said.

Victor looked toward the bar.

"Noise hides truth."

Victor said.

Alex removed his coat.

He placed it on the chair.

Then he sat.

A waiter approached.

"What will you drink?"

The waiter asked.

"Whiskey."

Alex said.

The waiter nodded.

He walked away.

Victor studied Alex.

"You came quickly."

Victor said.

"You sounded curious."

Alex said.

Victor turned the glass once.

Ice clicked inside.

"You enjoyed the conference."

Alex said.

Victor looked at him.

"Yes."

Victor said.

"You enjoyed watching people panic."

Alex said.

Victor lifted one eyebrow.

"Panic reveals character."

Victor said.

The waiter returned.

He placed the whiskey on the table.

Alex lifted the glass.

He tasted it.

The burn lingered.

Victor watched him.

"You answered well today."

Victor said.

Alex placed the glass down.

"Thank you."

Alex said.

Victor leaned back.

"You surprised the reporters."

Victor said.

"They expected Adrian to answer everything."

Victor said.

Alex looked toward the window.

"They usually do."

Alex said.

Rain ran down the glass.

Victor rested his hands on the table.

"You surprised Adrian."

Victor said.

Alex looked at him.

"Did I."

Alex said.

Victor nodded once.

"Yes."

Victor said.

Alex took another drink.

"You invited me here for compliments."

Alex said.

Victor shook his head.

"No."

Victor said.

"Then what."

Alex asked.

Victor placed his glass on the table.

The ice shifted again.

"You interest me."

Victor said.

Alex smiled once.

"That sounds dangerous."

Alex said.

Victor did not smile.

"Everything about you is dangerous."

Victor said.

Alex leaned back in the chair.

"You barely know me."

Alex said.

Victor studied him.

"I know Adrian."

Victor said.

The piano stopped playing.

A new song began.

Slow notes crossed the room.

Alex watched Victor.

"And that tells you something about me."

Alex said.

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Victor said.

Alex lifted his glass.

"What does it tell you."

Alex asked.

Victor spoke slowly.

"He changed his plans for you."

Victor said.

Alex held the glass in the air.

He did not drink yet.

"Adrian changes plans for money."

Alex said.

Victor shook his head.

"Not like this."

Victor said.

Alex set the glass down.

"You watch him closely."

Alex said.

Victor smiled faintly.

"Survival requires observation."

Victor said.

Alex leaned forward.

"Then you should know something."

Alex said.

Victor waited.

Alex met his eyes.

"He does not like you."

Alex said.

Victor laughed once.

"That feeling is mutual."

Victor said.

Alex nodded.

"Then why help him."

Alex asked.

Victor looked toward the window.

"Because enemies create progress."

Victor said.

Alex rubbed the edge of the glass.

"You enjoy war."

Alex said.

Victor looked back at him.

"Yes."

Victor said.

Silence settled between them.

Rain struck the window harder.

Victor reached inside his jacket.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

The paper was thick.

The edges were clean.

Alex looked at it.

"What is that."

Alex asked.

Victor tapped the envelope once.

"Information."

Victor said.

Alex did not touch it.

"About what."

Alex asked.

Victor answered.

"About you."

Victor said.

Alex watched him.

"I already know about me."

Alex said.

Victor leaned forward.

"Not this."

Victor said.

Alex looked down at the envelope.

"What kind of information."

Alex asked.

Victor rested his hands together.

"The kind Adrian keeps hidden."

Victor said.

Alex lifted his eyes.

"You enjoy provoking people."

Alex said.

Victor shook his head.

"I enjoy truth."

Victor said.

Alex pushed the envelope slightly.

It slid across the table.

He did not open it.

"Why show me this."

Alex asked.

Victor watched his face.

"Because you should know."

Victor said.

Alex looked at him.

"Know what."

Alex asked.

Victor spoke slowly.

"Adrian has been protecting you."

Victor said.

Alex did not react.

The piano notes filled the silence.

"From what."

Alex asked.

Victor leaned back again.

"That is the interesting part."

Victor said.

Alex waited.

Victor tapped the envelope again.

"The proof is inside."

Victor said.

Alex studied the paper.

His fingers touched the edge.

He opened the flap.

Inside were photographs.

Printed emails.

A page of financial records.

Alex looked at the first photograph.

A man stood outside a building.

The man held a camera.

Alex placed the photograph down.

"What is this."

Alex asked.

Victor spoke quietly.

"A surveillance contractor."

Victor said.

Alex looked at the papers again.

"Why follow me."

Alex asked.

Victor nodded toward the envelope.

"Read the name."

Victor said.

Alex found a line on the page.

The name sat beside a company logo.

Alex looked up.

"That company belongs to Laurent Security."

Alex said.

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Victor said.

Alex stared at the documents.

"He hired someone to follow me."

Alex said.

Victor shook his head.

"No."

Victor said.

"Then explain it."

Alex asked.

Victor leaned forward again.

"He hired someone to watch the man following you."

Victor said.

Alex held the paper still.

Rain struck the window harder.

The sound grew louder.

"You expect me to believe this."

Alex said.

Victor lifted his glass.

"I expect you to read the documents."

Victor said.

Alex turned the second page.

An email thread appeared.

Several messages were blacked out.

One line remained visible.

Continue surveillance. Do not approach Ward.

Alex looked at the sender.

The name read Adrian Laurent.

Alex placed the page down slowly.

The table felt cold under his hand.

"Why are you telling me this."

Alex asked.

Victor watched him.

"Because you matter to him."

Victor said.

Alex looked at Victor.

Victor smiled.

The room felt quieter now.

Alex leaned back.

He looked toward the rain.

"You want something."

Alex said.

Victor nodded once.

"Of course."

Victor said.

Alex folded the papers.

"What."

Alex asked.

Victor spoke carefully.

"Awareness."

Victor said.

Alex studied him.

"That sounds generous."

Alex said.

Victor shook his head.

"It is practical."

Victor said.

Alex tapped the envelope.

"You want me to distrust him."

Alex said.

Victor tilted his head.

"I want you to ask questions."

Victor said.

Alex leaned forward again.

"You enjoy this."

Alex said.

Victor smiled slightly.

"Every game needs tension."

Victor said.

Alex placed the papers back inside the envelope.

"You could have shown this to the press."

Alex said.

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Victor said.

"Why didn't you."

Alex asked.

Victor answered.

"Because that would damage him."

Victor said.

Alex raised one eyebrow.

"That surprises me."

Alex said.

Victor finished his drink.

"I do not destroy useful allies."

Victor said.

Alex looked at the envelope.

The paper edges were sharp.

"You believe someone is targeting me."

Alex said.

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Victor said.

"And Adrian knows who."

Alex asked.

Victor lifted one shoulder.

"He suspects."

Victor said.

Alex leaned back.

"Then why not tell me."

Alex asked.

Victor looked toward the window.

Rain blurred the lights outside.

"Control."

Victor said.

Alex looked at him.

"Explain."

Alex said.

Victor rested his hands together.

"Adrian controls information."

Victor said.

Alex waited.

Victor continued.

"He controls risk."

Victor said.

Alex nodded once.

"That sounds like him."

Alex said.

Victor leaned closer.

"You disrupt his control."

Victor said.

Alex watched him.

"How."

Alex asked.

Victor answered.

"Because he cares."

Victor said.

Alex laughed once.

"That would shock him."

Alex said.

Victor did not laugh.

"It should."

Victor said.

Alex stood.

The chair scraped the floor.

Victor watched him.

"You are leaving."

Victor said.

Alex placed money on the table.

"Yes."

Alex said.

Victor looked toward the envelope.

"You should keep that."

Victor said.

Alex picked it up.

He held it in one hand.

"You play dangerous games."

Alex said.

Victor smiled again.

"Games reveal truth."

Victor said.

Alex put on his coat.

Water still marked the fabric.

"You enjoy chaos."

Alex said.

Victor nodded once.

"Yes."

Victor said.

Alex turned toward the door.

Victor spoke once more.

"He will not like this conversation."

Victor said.

Alex looked back at him.

"He doesn't like most conversations."

Alex said.

Victor laughed quietly.

Alex opened the door.

Rain poured down outside.

Cold air entered the bar.

Alex stepped into the street.

The door closed behind him.

Rain soaked the pavement.

Streetlights reflected in the water.

Alex walked into the storm.

He did not look back.

The rain swallowed the city.
