Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: The Former Prodigy!

7:30 PM.

Led out by the head referee, the starting players of Stoke City and Aston Villa stepped onto the pitch.

The battle officially began!

Stoke City, playing at home, took the kickoff first.

After striker Sam Vokes passed the ball to midfield general Charlie Adam, he immediately sprinted toward the opponent's penalty area.

However, the highly experienced Charlie Adam did not choose to pass the ball back to Vokes, instead, he opted to spread the play wide.

Out on the left flank, Bojan Krkić received the ball.

This La Masia academy graduate was once hailed as Lionel Messi's true successor.

Unfortunately, Bojan's career had been completely plagued by nasty injuries.

After peaking incredibly early in his career, Bojan gradually began to decline. Now, at 29 years old, he could only find minutes playing in England's second-tier league.

Up in the Sky Sports gantry, Gary Weaver was on the call.

"Bojan receives the ball on the left flank! He cuts inside onto his right foot! Although Bojan is no longer in the same terrifying form as when he first emerged, he still easily dribbles right past right-back Alan Hutton! He takes the shot! The ball brushes just past the right post and goes out of bounds! Stoke City immediately puts heavy pressure on Aston Villa's goal right after kickoff! It seems Bojan is in excellent form today, Don. Aston Villa's defense absolutely must be cautious."

Although Bojan's shot did not result in a goal for Stoke City, the Stoke City fans in the freezing stands of the Britannia Stadium still gave Bojan warm applause and deafening cheers.

"Fucking beautiful, Bojan!"

"Use your exquisite skills to destroy Aston Villa!"

"Brilliant dribbling! Please lead Stoke City to victory today!"

"Keep attacking them like this! We can easily beat these bastards!"

But the good times didn't last long for the home side.

Just three minutes later, it was Aston Villa who launched a fierce assault on Stoke City's goal.

This time, it all came from Theodore Bjorn's interception.

In the midfield, when Stoke City's Charlie Adam attempted to pass the ball out to Bojan on the flank, Theodore suddenly appeared right in front of him.

And Theodore didn't waste any time with Charlie Adam. Seizing the moment, he decisively stepped in with his right foot.

Clean and efficient, without any hesitation, he successfully completed the interception.

Then, Theodore immediately showcased his elite long-passing ability.

He promptly passed the ball to his good friend, Jack Grealish!

Out on the left flank, after receiving the ball, Grealish took a deep breath and immediately ran hard toward Stoke City's defensive line.

Grealish's method of breaking through was simple—he cut inside!

Facing Tom Edwards' tight marking, Grealish quickly pushed the ball with his right foot and suddenly accelerated.

In truth, Grealish isn't a player with explosive raw speed.

Most of the time, his ability to break through relies heavily on sudden unpredictable changes in rhythm.

This time was no exception.

After pushing the ball forward, Grealish immediately came to an abrupt stop.

This left the Stoke City full-back completely struggling, entirely unable to keep up with Grealish's deceptive pace.

Midfielder Peter Etebo, seeing this danger, immediately joined the defense as well.

He desperately attempted to double-team Grealish in an effort to halt his advance.

But just as Etebo appeared in front of Grealish, Grealish had already completed the pass! A perfectly weighted lofted ball!

The ball swiftly found its way into the Stoke City penalty area.

More precisely, it landed right in front of Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham!

Near the penalty spot, Abraham collided with Stoke City's two center-backs, Danny Batth and Bruno Martins Indi.

However, Abraham still managed to create a clear shooting opportunity thanks to his excellent physical strength.

BOOM!

Abraham's shot successfully pierced the opponent's goal.

Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland didn't even have time to react.

He could only watch helplessly as the ball flew into the back of the net he was guarding!

"That is a goal!" Weaver shouted into his microphone. "Aston Villa have successfully scored first! And it's Tammy Abraham's goal! Jack Grealish provided the brilliant assist!"

"Stoke City's defense has been completely overwhelmed by Aston Villa's attack," Don Goodman couldn't help but criticize from the co-commentator's chair.

"Although Stoke City has many star players in their midfield and attack, their defensive performance is simply too fucking poor!"

Goodman could clearly feel exactly how fragile Stoke City's defense was.

This time, Aston Villa only needed a standard attacking play to effortlessly score.

It was almost too easy!

In the freezing stands of the Britannia Stadium, the Stoke City fans instantly lost their fighting spirit.

"What the fuck are the defenders doing?! Batth and Indi couldn't even handle Abraham?!"

"This is absolutely ridiculous! This is the worst defense I have ever seen! Both center-backs are sleepwalking out there!"

"If the team's defense is in this terrible state, I feel like Stoke City will be completely slaughtered by Aston Villa tonight!"

"Fuck! If they don't want to play, they should just get off the damn pitch! Don't embarrass themselves out there!"

Faced with the home fans' harsh criticism, Stoke City's head coach also felt immense pressure.

Nathan Jones immediately stood on the sidelines, frantically shouting the names of Stoke City's attacking players, urging them to launch an attack on the opponent's goal as soon as possible!

"Get forward, you bastards!" Nathan Jones did not want to lose this match at home!

After the restart, Stoke City's players began executing their signature attacking style.

Long balls and aerial crosses!

They sent high balls into the penalty area repeatedly, relying as much as possible on Vokes' immense heading ability to threaten Aston Villa's goal.

Although this physical tactical approach is often considered outdated, it remains highly effective in the Championship.

In the 10th minute of the match, the ball found its way to Tom Ince's feet.

The Stoke City winger, after receiving the ball, certainly had the ability to take on Aston Villa's defenders despite their heavy pressure.

But Tom Ince didn't do that. Instead, he chose to cross it directly.

Boom!

It was a clean and precise cross from the right flank. Within moments, the football was successfully lofted deep into Aston Villa's penalty area.

Right at the goalmouth, striker Sam Vokes soared high into the air.

He powerfully outjumped Aston Villa's towering center-back Tyrone Mings to deliver a header!

The ball shot rapidly toward the goal guarded by Lovre Kalinić.

Vokes's header was successful. This powerful, downward header completely breached Aston Villa's defense.

Goalkeeper Lovre Kalinić's desperate diving save was entirely unable to stop Vokes's header from crossing the line.

1-1!

Both teams were back on level terms!

On the Sky Sports broadcast, Gary Weaver couldn't help but praise the goal.

"Truly the 'City in the Sky', Don! This attack from Stoke City perfectly showcased their deadly aerial prowess!"

"Striker Vokes's header successfully found the back of the net!" Goodman added. "Aston Villa's defense also made a crucial mistake this time. Only one center-back, Mings, was properly marking Vokes, while the other center-back, Tommy Elphick, was caught completely off guard! Unsurprisingly, tonight's match is highly likely to turn into an absolute goal fest!"

In the stands of the Britannia Stadium, tens of thousands of Stoke City fans erupted in wild excitement once again.

The deafening cheers and roars of the fans echoed through the concrete stands.

Stoke City fans finally saw hope of fully overturning the scoreline!

Manager Nathan Jones immediately urged his players to press forward and attack relentlessly.

"Seize the momentum!" he screamed.

He wanted them to strive to completely overturn the scoreline in a short amount of time.

Unfortunately for him, from this exact point on, Aston Villa began to take the game seriously.

In the 17th minute of the match, Aston Villa had sustained possession.

Several midfielders—Grealish, Theodore Bjorn, and McGinn—flawlessly executed a fluid series of one-touch passes.

After three to five rapid passes, Grealish cut inside aggressively from the left flank, it was his signature move, expertly using deceptive changes in rhythm.

This time, however, Stoke City's defenders had clearly learned from their previous careless mistakes.

In addition to full-back Tom Edwards, midfield stalwarts Charlie Adam and Joe Allen simultaneously closed in tightly on Grealish from both sides.

In an instant, Grealish was completely surrounded by three aggressive defenders, all heavily pressing him.

"A triple-marking situation!" Weaver observed. "Stoke City's defense is certainly showing Jack Grealish some massive respect tonight!"

"Deploying three players to mark Grealish in one single area is a huge commitment," Goodman added.

The Sky Sports commentators had barely finished speaking when Grealish suddenly delivered a crisp pass.

Under the suffocating pressure of three physical Stoke City players, Grealish naturally wouldn't choose to just dribble blindly and lose the ball.

The best and only option was to pass.

In a split second, the ball arrived perfectly at the edge of the penalty area.

McGinn, after receiving Grealish's pass, immediately shaped up to take a long-range shot!

At this terrifying moment, all the Stoke City players couldn't help but tense up in fear.

The last remaining midfielder, Etebo, lunged forward desperately to block, he was frantically attempting to stop McGinn's shot!

Little did he know, this was a brilliant feint from McGinn.

Instead of taking the actual shot, McGinn smartly cut the ball back and passed it smoothly to Theodore Bjorn out on the right flank.

As Aston Villa's current top assist provider, Theodore already had a specific target clearly in mind.

That target was Grealish.

After this rapid series of passes, Stoke City's defensive line in the penalty area was completely full of gaping holes.

Both center-backs, Batth and Indi, had instinctively positioned themselves tightly on either side of striker Abraham, desperately preventing Abraham from heading the ball.

And there was zero defensive reaction to Grealish, who had already stealthily infiltrated the penalty area unmarked!

Boom!

Theodore Bjorn quickly delivered a fatal crushing blow to Stoke City.

The ball beautifully soared right over the heads of Abraham and two of Stoke City's central defenders, landing perfectly at Grealish's feet at the far post!

Grealish didn't even attempt to control the ball—instead, he went for a vicious volley right away as the ball shot like a cannonball straight into Stoke City's net!

"GREALISH!" Weaver screamed. "Grealish's volley! Aston Villa has successfully turned the game completely around! Two to one! Grealish has helped Aston Villa retake the lead!"

"And it is yet another brilliant assist from Theodore Bjorn!" Goodman added. "Stoke City's defense has been completely and utterly disrupted by Aston Villa's midfielders today. Almost every single Stoke player was dragged totally out of position."

"Aston Villa's midfielders are really performing exceptionally well," Goodman continued analyzing.

"Grealish, McGinn, and Theodore Bjorn. All three of these players have the elite ability to both pass and shoot, and their football intelligence is incredibly high! Most importantly, they are all still very young. Although Stoke City's midfield also boasts veteran players like Joe Allen and Charlie Adam, who have long proven themselves in the Premier League, in terms of overall dynamic strength, Aston Villa's midfield is vastly superior!"

On the touchline, John Terry was the very first to loudly applaud Grealish's goal.

"Fucking brilliant, lads!" Terry yelled.

The score of two to one put Aston Villa in a relatively comfortable, advantageous position.

For the home team however, the crushing pressure truly began to mount!

After the restart, head coach Nathan Jones once again furiously issued orders for his players to push forward aggressively.

He aggressively demanded that they equalize as quickly as possible.

But... just as Stoke City's midfielders were about to really ramp up their efforts, Aston Villa's midfield delivered another stunning blow!

In the 20th minute of the match, Joe Allen received a pass from a teammate in the backfield and attempted to use his dribbling skills to quickly advance the ball into the attacking third.

But the exact moment Joe Allen carried the ball to the center circle, extreme danger struck.

Theodore Bjorn, Mile Jedinak, and Conor Hourihane.

Three Aston Villa midfielders closed in simultaneously, surrounding the former Liverpool midfielder in a suffocating, coordinated press.

Joe Allen panicked instantly, especially when Theodore aggressively made hard physical contact with him, Joe Allen lost his balance in the blink of an eye.

Seizing the golden opportunity, Hourihane swiftly and cleanly dispossessed Joe Allen from the blind side.

Aston Villa's rapid counterattack was officially on!

Hourihane's long, sweeping pass found Grealish in an instant.

As Grealish received the ball, Stoke City's defenders grew visibly tense and terrified.

Besides full-back Tom Edwards, central defender Danny Batth also frantically joined the defensive effort.

Grealish, utilizing his signature change of pace, effortlessly slipped right past both scrambling defenders.

Cutting inside forcefully, he unleashed a powerful dipping long-range shot!

Boom!

The ball flew straight and true into the top corner of the net.

Jack Butland could only watch in pure despair as the ball sailed cleanly past him...

The score instantly shifted from two to one, to three to one!

"Grealish scores a phenomenal double!" Weaver roared on the broadcast. "Aston Villa leads Stoke City 3-1!"

"Could this match turn into an absolute bloodbath?!" Goodman added, completely stunned.
