Chapter 40 - A Game Between Monsters

Night had fully settled over Mystic Falls.

The town looked peaceful.

It always did.

But tonight—

Something had shifted beneath the surface.

Inside Alexander's house, the silence was thick.

Elena stood near the center of the room, arms crossed, her thoughts still racing after Bonnie's words.

"You didn't deny it," she said.

Alexander stood near the window, looking out into the darkness.

"I didn't confirm it either."

Elena frowned.

"That's not better."

Alexander's lips curved slightly.

"It depends on perspective."

Before she could respond—

The front door opened.

No knock.

No hesitation.

Klaus Mikaelson walked in like he owned the place.

Because, in his mind—

He did.

Elijah followed behind him, closing the door quietly.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Not tense.

Not chaotic.

Focused.

Like predators entering the same territory.

Elena exhaled sharply.

"Do you ever knock?"

Klaus smiled faintly.

"Only when it matters."

His eyes shifted to Alexander.

"And this… doesn't."

Alexander didn't move.

"You're persistent."

Klaus chuckled.

"I'm curious."

He stepped further into the room, pulling a folded document from his coat.

"And I found something."

Elijah remained silent, watching carefully.

Always observing.

Always calculating.

Klaus placed the paper on the table.

"Records."

Alexander glanced at it briefly.

Unimpressed.

"Old ones."

That got his attention.

Not visibly.

But internally.

Klaus noticed anyway.

His smile widened.

"Centuries old."

"Different countries."

"Different witnesses."

He stepped closer.

"But all describing the same man."

Elena slowly approached the table, looking down at the fragile document.

Her stomach tightened.

"What does it say?"

Klaus didn't look at her.

"Dark hair."

"Golden eyes."

"Unidentified immortal."

Silence filled the room.

Elena looked up.

At Alexander.

"You've been here before?"

Alexander didn't answer.

Klaus laughed softly.

"That silence…"

"…is more convincing than any confession."

Elijah finally spoke.

"We found multiple accounts."

"Each one describing interference in supernatural conflicts."

"Each one ending the same way."

Alexander glanced at him.

"And how is that?"

Elijah met his gaze.

"No one could explain you."

A pause.

Then—

Klaus leaned closer.

"And that… is my favorite part."

The air grew heavier.

Elena felt it immediately.

Her heartbeat quickened.

Something was happening.

Not physically.

But something deeper.

Alexander stepped forward.

Closing the distance slightly.

His golden eyes reflected faint light.

Calm.

Ancient.

Unreadable.

"You spent the night chasing stories," he said.

Klaus smiled.

"I spent the night finding patterns."

A beat of silence.

Then—

"What exactly are you?"

The question landed differently this time.

Not casual.

Not curious.

Demanding.

Serious.

For a moment—

Nothing moved.

Then Alexander spoke.

Quiet.

Controlled.

"I'm someone who has lived long enough…"

His gaze shifted briefly toward the darkness outside.

"…to see the same questions asked again and again."

Klaus's smile didn't fade.

But his eyes sharpened.

"That's not an answer."

Alexander looked back at him.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"But it's enough for now."

And strangely—

Klaus accepted that.

Not because he was satisfied.

But because—

The hunt had just begun.
