Chapter 43 - Katherine’s Move

Mystic Falls had always been a game.

A quiet one.

Hidden beneath smiles, friendships, and small-town routines.

But tonight—

The board had changed.

And Katherine Pierce could feel it.

She stood at the edge of the clock tower, the wind brushing softly through her hair as she overlooked the sleeping town.

Her expression was calm.

But her mind—

Sharp.

Calculating.

Always three steps ahead.

"Older than the Originals…" she murmured softly.

That piece of information alone changed everything.

Because in all her centuries of survival—

There was one rule she never broke.

Know your enemies.

And right now—

She didn't know Alexander.

That made him dangerous.

More dangerous than Klaus.

More unpredictable than anyone she had ever faced.

And that—

That was unacceptable.

Katherine turned, her heels clicking softly as she stepped away from the ledge.

"Guess I'll have to fix that."

Moments later, she stood outside Alexander's house.

No hesitation.

No fear.

Just curiosity wrapped in confidence.

She knocked.

Lightly.

Then waited.

The door opened almost instantly.

Alexander stood there, exactly as calm as ever.

Like he had been expecting her.

Of course he had.

Katherine smiled.

"Well… aren't you interesting."

Alexander leaned slightly against the doorframe.

"And you're predictable."

Her smile widened.

"I'll take that as a compliment."

She stepped inside without waiting for permission.

Bold.

Deliberate.

A test.

Alexander didn't stop her.

Another test.

The game had already begun.

Katherine turned slowly, taking in the room.

"You know," she said casually, "you've made quite an impression."

Alexander closed the door behind her.

"I tend to."

Katherine laughed softly.

"Oh, I'm sure you do."

She walked closer, circling him slowly.

Observing.

Analyzing.

"You've got Klaus curious," she continued.

"That's not easy."

Alexander remained still.

Unbothered.

"And you have Bonnie scared."

That—

That was more important.

Because witches didn't scare easily.

Katherine stopped in front of him.

Her eyes sharp now.

Focused.

"So let's skip the games," she said softly.

"What are you?"

Alexander looked at her.

And for a moment—

There was something different in his gaze.

Not annoyance.

Not amusement.

Recognition.

"You're not asking out of fear," he said.

Katherine smirked.

"I don't scare easily."

"No," Alexander agreed.

"You don't."

A brief silence settled between them.

Then—

Katherine stepped even closer.

Close enough that most people would feel uncomfortable.

Close enough to test boundaries.

"But I do plan ahead," she said quietly.

"And right now, I don't know if you're a problem… or an opportunity."

Alexander's lips curved faintly.

"And which do you prefer?"

Katherine didn't hesitate.

"Opportunity."

Of course she did.

She always did.

Alexander studied her for a moment.

Then spoke.

"You're not the first person to think that."

Katherine tilted her head slightly.

"And the others?"

A pause.

Then—

"They didn't last long."

That should have been a warning.

But Katherine—

She smiled.

"Good," she said softly.

"I don't like competition."

Alexander chuckled quietly.

And that—

That was the first time she felt it.

Something beneath the surface.

Not power.

Not aura.

Something deeper.

Something… wrong.

But instead of stepping back—

She leaned into it.

Because Katherine Pierce didn't survive centuries by running from the unknown.

She adapted.

Controlled.

Used it.

"So," she said lightly, stepping back just enough, "what do you want?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He walked past her, moving toward the window.

Looking out at the quiet town.

"What everyone wants," he said finally.

Katherine crossed her arms.

"And that is?"

Alexander glanced back at her.

"Something different."

Katherine's smile returned.

Slow.

Dangerous.

"Then maybe we can help each other."

Alexander didn't agree.

Didn't refuse.

But the silence between them—

That was enough.

Because in Mystic Falls—

Silence often meant the deal had already begun.
