Chapter 48 - Pressure of Kings

The rooftop fell into silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

Not the empty kind.

This silence—

Was alive.

Klaus Mikaelson and Alexander stood facing each other, unmoving.

Measured.

Watching.

Rebekah Mikaelson had already taken a step back.

Not out of fear.

But instinct.

Because something about this—

Felt wrong.

"You speak with confidence," Klaus said finally.

Alexander didn't respond immediately.

His gaze remained steady.

"Confidence implies uncertainty," he said.

A pause.

"I don't have that."

Klaus's smile widened slightly.

"Everyone has uncertainty."

"No," Alexander replied calmly.

"Only those who don't understand their limits."

That answer lingered.

Because it wasn't arrogance.

It was… fact.

Klaus took a slow step forward.

"Then tell me," he said, voice lowering,

"What are your limits?"

The wind moved softly across the rooftop.

Alexander's eyes didn't shift.

"I haven't found them."

Rebekah's expression tightened slightly.

That—

That wasn't something people said lightly.

Klaus chuckled.

Low.

Dangerous.

"That's either confidence…"

Another step forward.

"Or ignorance."

Alexander tilted his head slightly.

"You're welcome to test it."

And there it was.

The first true invitation.

The air tightened instantly.

Rebekah moved again.

Further back now.

Because she understood something Klaus didn't fully acknowledge yet—

This wasn't control anymore.

This was risk.

Klaus's eyes darkened.

"You're in my town," he said quietly.

Alexander replied just as calmly—

"I'm aware."

"Then you understand the rules."

A brief pause.

"No," Alexander said.

That single word—

Shifted everything.

Klaus's smile faded slightly.

"No?" he repeated.

Alexander stepped forward.

Closing the distance.

"I don't follow rules I didn't create."

Silence.

Heavy.

Sharp.

Rebekah exhaled slowly.

This—

This was escalating faster than expected.

Klaus's voice dropped.

"Careful," he said.

That word carried power.

Authority.

Threat.

But Alexander didn't react.

"I am," he replied.

And for the first time—

Klaus's patience cracked slightly.

Not visibly.

But enough.

In a blur—

Klaus moved.

Fast.

Faster than any normal vampire.

Faster than most could even perceive.

His hand shot forward—

Grabbing Alexander by the throat.

The impact echoed lightly across the rooftop.

Rebekah tensed instantly.

This was it.

The first real move.

Klaus's grip tightened.

His eyes burned with controlled intensity.

"Let's see," he said quietly,

"If you're as untouchable as you think."

Silence.

Then—

Nothing.

No struggle.

No resistance.

No panic.

Alexander simply stood there.

Looking at him.

Unmoved.

Unbothered.

Unchanged.

That—

That was wrong.

Klaus's grip tightened further.

The force was enough to crush bone.

To tear flesh.

But Alexander's expression didn't shift.

Not even slightly.

Rebekah's eyes narrowed.

Because now—

Even she felt it.

Something was off.

Klaus noticed it too.

Not physically.

But instinctively.

This wasn't strength.

This wasn't durability.

This was something else.

Something deeper.

Something… unnatural.

Slowly—

Very slowly—

Alexander raised his hand.

Not to attack.

Not to block.

Just—

To touch Klaus's wrist.

And the moment he did—

Klaus felt it.

A shift.

Not pain.

Not force.

But something far worse.

His strength—

Flickered.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Klaus's eyes widened slightly.

And that—

That never happened.

Alexander spoke.

Calm.

Quiet.

"You rely too much on power."

Klaus released him instantly.

Stepping back.

Not in fear.

But in realization.

Rebekah stared now.

"What was that?" she asked.

Klaus didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

And that—

That was new.

Alexander adjusted his collar slightly.

"You wanted to test me," he said.

Klaus's gaze sharpened again.

"Yes."

Alexander nodded once.

"Now you have."

A pause.

"And?" Klaus asked.

Alexander looked at him.

"You're exactly what I expected."

That—

That wasn't an insult.

It was worse.

It was dismissal.

The air grew colder.

Klaus stepped forward again.

But this time—

Slower.

More careful.

"You think this is over?" he asked.

Alexander's answer came instantly.

"It hasn't started."

Silence.

Then—

Alexander turned.

Just turned.

And began to walk away.

Rebekah frowned.

"You're just leaving?"

He didn't stop.

"Yes."

Klaus's voice followed him.

"You don't walk away from me."

Alexander paused for half a second.

Then said—

"I just did."

And continued walking.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Nothing.

Klaus stood still.

Watching him disappear into the night.

For the first time in a long time—

He wasn't smiling.

Rebekah stepped closer.

"He's dangerous," she said quietly.

Klaus didn't respond immediately.

Because his mind wasn't on the words.

It was on that moment.

That single second—

When his power…

Faltered.

Finally—

He spoke.

"Yes," he said softly.

A pause.

Then—

"But now…"

His eyes darkened.

"I'm interested."

Far away—

Walking through the empty streets—

Alexander's expression remained calm.

Unchanged.

But his eyes—

Carried something new.

Not curiosity.

Not indifference.

But awareness.

Because now—

This wasn't observation anymore.

This was involvement.

And Mystic Falls—

Was about to feel it.
