Chapter 50 - The Price of Knowing

The night felt heavier.

Not darker.

Not colder.

Just… wrong.

Inside the Bennett house, candles burned unevenly.

Some too bright.

Some barely alive.

Bonnie Bennett stood at the center of the room again.

But this time—

She wasn't reacting.

She was preparing.

"You shouldn't do this," Sheila Bennett said firmly.

Bonnie didn't look at her.

"I have to."

Grams stepped closer.

"You don't even know what you're reaching for."

Bonnie's jaw tightened slightly.

"I know enough."

A pause.

"That's the problem," Grams replied.

Silence followed.

Because deep down—

Bonnie understood.

But that didn't stop her.

"I need to see what he is," she said quietly.

Grams exhaled slowly.

"Then don't touch him directly."

Bonnie finally looked at her.

"Observe."

A pause.

"Nothing more."

Minutes later—

The room shifted.

Candles aligned in a circle.

Symbols drawn carefully on the floor.

Not aggressive.

Not summoning.

Just—

Connection.

Bonnie sat in the center.

Eyes closing slowly.

Her breathing steadied.

Magic gathered.

Not wild this time.

Controlled.

Focused.

"I'm not reaching for him," she whispered.

"I'm just… watching."

The spell activated.

Softly.

Silently.

Her awareness expanded.

Through the air.

Through the space.

Searching—

And then—

She found him.

Across town—

Standing alone near the edge of the woods—

Alexander stood still.

As if he had always been there.

As if he had never moved.

The wind passed through the trees.

Leaves shifted.

Everything normal.

Everything still.

And then—

His eyes lifted slightly.

Because he felt it.

Not magic.

Not exactly.

But attention.

Watching.

Careful.

Distant.

Bonnie.

Back in the Bennett house—

Bonnie's breathing slowed further.

"I see you…" she whispered.

Her magic moved closer.

Careful.

Slow.

Observing.

At first—

Nothing happened.

No resistance.

No reaction.

And for a moment—

She thought Grams was wrong.

Then—

Alexander turned his head slightly.

Not toward her.

But toward the space she occupied.

And suddenly—

Everything changed.

Bonnie's connection didn't break.

It didn't push back.

It didn't collapse.

It—

Deepened.

Pulled.

Like gravity.

Her eyes widened.

"No…" she breathed.

This wasn't her moving forward.

This was something pulling her in.

Faster.

Stronger.

Unstoppable.

The space around her shifted.

Darkness—

But not empty.

Endless.

Ancient.

Her magic trembled.

Then—

Stopped.

Completely.

Bonnie gasped.

She tried to pull back.

But she couldn't.

Because now—

She wasn't observing anymore.

She was inside it.

Inside something vast.

Something that didn't have shape.

Didn't have limits.

Something that—

Shouldn't exist.

Outside—

Her body tensed violently.

"Bonnie!" Grams shouted.

But Bonnie didn't respond.

Her eyes remained closed.

Her expression—

Frozen in shock.

Inside that space—

Bonnie tried to speak.

"What… are you…?" she whispered.

And for a moment—

There was silence.

Then—

Something answered.

Not with a voice.

But with presence.

Overwhelming.

Absolute.

"You're asking the wrong question."

The words didn't echo.

They existed.

Everywhere.

Bonnie's breathing broke.

"Then what should I ask?" she forced out.

A pause.

And then—

"Why are you still here?"

Her heart stopped.

Because that—

Wasn't a question.

It was a warning.

Outside—

The candles shattered.

Glass cracked.

The symbols on the floor burned—

Then vanished.

Grams moved instantly.

Placing her hands on Bonnie's shoulders.

"Pull back!" she commanded.

But Bonnie couldn't.

Because something still held her.

Not tightly.

Not forcefully.

But inevitably.

Inside—

Bonnie's voice trembled.

"I… didn't mean to—"

"Intent doesn't matter."

The response was immediate.

Cold.

Final.

Her magic tried to surge—

And failed.

Again.

That same interruption.

That same impossibility.

Tears formed in her eyes.

"I can't leave…" she whispered.

Silence.

Then—

"You were allowed to enter."

A pause.

"You can leave."

That word—

Allowed—

Hit differently.

Because it meant—

This wasn't her spell anymore.

Outside—

Grams closed her eyes.

Drawing on everything she had.

Her magic surged.

Stronger.

Older.

"Bonnie, listen to me!" she said sharply.

"You don't fight it!"

"Let go!"

Inside—

Bonnie heard her.

Faintly.

Distant.

But there.

Let go.

She stopped struggling.

Stopped pulling.

Stopped resisting.

And the moment she did—

Everything released.

Her eyes snapped open.

She gasped violently.

Air rushing back into her lungs.

Her body shaking.

Sweat covering her skin.

"I—" she tried to speak.

But the words didn't come.

Grams held her steady.

"You're back," she said firmly.

Bonnie nodded weakly.

But her eyes—

Her eyes were different.

Because now—

She knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

Across town—

Alexander stood in the same place.

Unmoved.

Unchanged.

As if nothing had happened.

But his eyes—

Shifted slightly.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Just—

Aware.

"They learn quickly," he said softly.

The wind passed again.

Carrying his voice into nothing.

Back in the Bennett house—

Bonnie finally spoke.

Her voice barely above a whisper.

"He let me go."

Grams didn't respond immediately.

Because that was worse than anything else.

"Then remember this," Grams said quietly.

"Next time…"

A pause.

"He might not."

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Final.

Because now—

Curiosity had a price.

And Bonnie had just paid the first part of it.
