Chapter 80 - The Girl in the Trees

The room kept moving around me.

Stefan was explaining the dinner to Caroline and Bonnie. Damon had somehow turned the entire thing into a dramatic retelling involving "psychological warfare and expensive table decorations." Tyler looked confused. Caroline looked more confused.

Normal.

As normal as Mystic Falls ever got.

But my attention remained on the window.

On the empty darkness beyond the trees.

Because she had been there.

Not imagination.

Not a mistake.

Real.

And more importantly—

she wanted to be seen.

People hiding in Mystic Falls usually made the opposite choice.

Elena noticed first.

Again.

She stepped closer, lowering her voice slightly.

"Alexander."

I looked toward her.

"What happened?"

Stefan stopped talking immediately.

Damon noticed too.

That was the problem with silence.

People paid attention to it.

I looked back outside.

"There was someone watching."

The room instantly changed.

Caroline stood.

Bonnie frowned.

Stefan moved toward the window.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Damon blinked.

"You don't know?"

I looked at him.

"That's unusual."

That got everyone's attention.

Because Damon understood what I meant immediately.

Stefan did too.

Normally, by the time something reached us, I already had enough information to predict the outcome range.

Patterns.

Intent.

Movement.

But this—

nothing.

No pressure like Klaus.

No familiar presence like Elijah.

No aggression.

Just observation.

Bonnie stepped closer.

"Witch?"

"No."

"Vampire?"

"Possibly."

Caroline crossed her arms.

"Okay, I officially hate mysterious creepy people standing outside windows."

Damon pointed toward her.

"See? That's the correct reaction."

Stefan opened the front door immediately.

"I'm checking outside."

"I'll come," Elena said.

"No."

Three voices answered at once.

Mine.

Stefan's.

Damon's.

Elena stared at all of us.

"...seriously?"

Damon pointed dramatically.

"See? Progress. We're becoming a team."

She looked completely unimpressed.

A few minutes later, Stefan, Damon, and I moved into the woods behind the Boarding House.

Nothing.

No movement.

No scent.

No footprints.

Too clean.

Damon crouched near the edge of the tree line and looked around.

"Okay, I hate this."

Stefan glanced at him.

"You hate everything."

"No. I specifically hate invisible mystery people."

I ignored them.

Because something felt wrong.

Not dangerous.

Just...

familiar.

I stopped.

Stefan noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

I looked deeper into the trees.

For a second—

nothing.

Then movement.

Fast.

A figure crossed between the trees ahead.

Blonde.

Gone immediately.

Damon saw it too.

"Oh hell no."

We moved instantly.

The woods blurred around us as we followed.

Branches snapped beneath our feet. Shadows shifted between trees. Movement ahead.

Fast.

Very fast.

Not vampire fast.

Different.

Controlled.

Interesting.

Then suddenly—

the movement stopped.

The forest opened into a small clearing.

Empty.

Completely empty.

Damon looked around.

"...you have got to be kidding me."

Stefan scanned the area carefully.

"No scent."

"No tracks," Damon added.

Silence.

Then—

clap.

clap.

clap.

We turned instantly.

She stood on a fallen tree several feet behind us.

Blonde hair.

Young.

Maybe Elena's age.

Leather jacket.

Arms folded.

Smiling.

Not nervous.

Not afraid.

Just amused.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Damon stared.

"...okay, that's unsettling."

She looked directly at me.

Not Stefan.

Not Damon.

Me.

"So," she said casually, "you're Alexander."

Silence.

Stefan stepped slightly forward.

"Who are you?"

She ignored him.

Still watching me.

"Huh."

Her smile widened.

"You really are different."

Damon looked offended.

"Okay, excuse me. Mystery forest girl. Little rude."

That finally made her glance toward him.

Then Stefan.

Then back to me.

And somehow—

her smile became even more amused.

"Oh wow."

A pause.

"Oh this is bad."

Stefan frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

She looked at Elena's absent location back toward the Boarding House.

Then back at me.

Then laughed softly.

"No wonder Klaus is interested."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Damon slowly looked at me.

Then at her.

Then back at me.

"No."

Stefan looked confused.

"No what?"

Damon pointed wildly.

"No. Absolutely not. I refuse."

The blonde girl blinked.

"...refuse what?"

Damon looked horrified.

"I know this pattern."

He pointed at me dramatically.

"Mysterious blonde girl appears in the woods, knows things she shouldn't know, immediately talks to Alexander—"

Then he looked toward the sky.

"Oh God, Mystic Falls is adding another one."

Silence.

The girl stared.

Stefan stared.

Even I stared.

Then she smiled.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

"...I like him."

Damon looked devastated.

And somehow—

I had a feeling things had just become a lot more complicated.
