The standard Nine Shackles framework described it as the formation of a secondary body within the primary — the nascent soul, a concentration of cultivation identity that could persist even if the physical body was destroyed. He thought: this is what Heaven's Will does not understand and cannot replicate. Heaven's Will is the extension of a single source outward to the full extent of the Nine Vault Heavens. It enforces. It does not address. The soul formed in relation addresses by nature, the way a bridge addresses both banks by nature — its purpose is the crossing, the connection, the being-between.
He thought about this with the quality he brought to things that were both true and important and that he was not yet done understanding. He set it in the part of his mind he used for things that needed to be returned to, and he turned his attention to the practice.

He practiced in the deep-absence protocol for the first time, in the founding circle that was no longer registerable to the three practitioners scanning from twenty-two li and approaching, with the full weight of what was happening in the external environment held in one part of his awareness and the Nascent Soul work held in another and the balance between the two not a distraction but a quality — the specific quality of doing the right thing in the right place while the world outside arranged itself according to its own logic and the harbor held and the design worked and the junction ran below and the work continued.
He thought: she practiced in conditions exactly like this. Not exactly — her conditions had been worse, the scattering coming rather than the approach of investigators who did not yet know what they were looking for. But the quality of it: the work proceeding while external forces moved toward the harbor. The specific quality of trust in the design while the design was being tested.
He thought: she trusted the design because she had built it. We trust it because she built it and because it has been demonstrating itself consistently for four thousand years. The trust is warranted. It is warranted now.
