Chapter 31 - The Secret

They drove faster than they ever had before.

Sara gripped the door handle, her heart pounding, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. Beside her, Adrian's face was carved from stone, his hands white-knuckled on the wheel.

"Tom," Sara whispered. "Elena. Marta."

"Call them," Adrian ordered.

Sara's hands shook as she pulled out her phone. She dialed Marta's number.

One ring. Two. Three.

"Sara." Marta's voice was calm, steady. "Where are you?"

Sara nearly collapsed with relief. "You're okay. You're all okay?"

"We're fine. Why? What's happened?"

"Natalia. She was seen at the mansion. A photograph. Adrian got a photograph."

Marta was quiet for a moment. Then: "There's no one here. The guards are in position. The gates are locked. No one has entered the property all day."

Sara's mind raced. "The photograph—it had to be old. It had to be from before."

"A warning," Marta said. "She wanted you to know she's watching. That she can get close whenever she wants."

Sara closed her eyes. "We're coming home. Lock everything. Don't let anyone in."

"I will. Drive safely."

The line went dead.

The mansion was quiet when they arrived.

Too quiet.

The guards were at their posts. The gates were locked. Everything looked normal. But Sara couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

Adrian took her hand as they walked through the front door.

"Stay close to me."

They moved through the house, checking rooms, checking windows, checking shadows. Everything was in its place. Everything was silent.

They found Marta in the kitchen, making tea.

Elena sat at the table, a book open in front of her. She looked up when they entered, her face calm.

"You're back early," she observed.

Adrian crossed to her, pulling her into his arms. "You're safe."

Elena stiffened, then relaxed. "Of course I'm safe. Why wouldn't I be?"

Adrian pulled back, looking at her face. "The photograph. Natalia. She was here. At the mansion. Someone saw her."

Elena's face went pale. "When?"

"The photograph was sent tonight. But it could have been taken any time. Any day."

Elena set her book down slowly. Her hands were shaking.

"I need to tell you something," she said quietly. "Something I should have told you before."

Sara moved closer, taking Elena's hand. "What is it?"

Elena looked at Adrian. Her eyes were wet.

"Natalia isn't just your father's first wife. She's..." She took a deep breath. "She's your mother."

The words hung in the air like smoke.

Adrian stared at her. "What?"

Elena's voice was barely a whisper. "I raised you. I loved you. I was your mother in every way that mattered. But Natalia gave birth to you, Adrian. She's your biological mother."

Sara's world tilted.

Adrian stumbled backward, his face white. "That's not possible. You're my mother. You've always been my mother."

"I am." Elena reached for him, but he pulled away. "I am your mother. I raised you. I loved you. I held you when you cried. I stayed up with you when you were sick. That's real, Adrian. That's never going to change."

"But she—Natalia—"

"Your father took you from her when you were three days old. He told her you died. He told everyone you died. And then he gave you to me."

Adrian's hands were shaking. "You knew? All this time, you knew she was alive? You knew she was my mother?"

Elena's tears fell. "I didn't know she was alive. I thought she was dead. Your father told me she died in childbirth. I believed him. I had no reason not to."

Sara moved to Adrian's side, taking his hand. He gripped it like a lifeline.

"When did you find out?" he demanded.

"After the warehouse. After Dimitri brought her to the church. I saw her face. I knew. I recognized her from photographs I found years ago, hidden in your father's things. I didn't tell you because I was afraid. Afraid you'd see me differently. Afraid you'd stop loving me."

Adrian stared at her for a long, terrible moment.

Then he crossed the room and pulled her into his arms.

"You're my mother," he said, his voice rough. "You're the only mother I've ever known. Nothing changes that. Nothing."

Elena sobbed against his chest. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I didn't tell you."

"You were protecting me. I understand."

Sara watched them hold each other, her heart aching.

But her mind was racing.

Natalia was Adrian's biological mother. She had been cast out, told her son was dead. She had spent decades watching from the shadows, waiting, planning.

She didn't just want the Volkov legacy.

She wanted her son.

Later that night, Sara found Adrian in the garden.

He stood among the roses, staring up at the stars. His face was unreadable.

She came up beside him, slipping her hand into his.

"How are you feeling?" she asked.

"I don't know." His voice was distant. "I keep thinking about her. Natalia. Wondering if she ever tried to find me. If she ever wanted me. If any of this would be different if she'd been there."

Sara leaned against him. "You have a mother. A real one. One who chose you, who raised you, who loved you. That matters more than blood."

Adrian looked down at her. "Does it?"

"Of course it does. Blood doesn't make a family, Adrian. Love does. And you have more love around you than most people ever get."

He pulled her close, burying his face in her hair.

"What if I can't stop her? What if she hurts you? Hurts Tom? Hurts my mother?"

"Then we face it together. Like we always have."

Adrian held her tighter. "I'm not going to lose you. I'm not going to lose anyone else."

"You won't."

He kissed her—soft, desperate, full of everything he couldn't say.

When they broke apart, Sara looked up at him.

"There's something I need to tell you."

Adrian's brow furrowed. "What?"

Sara took a deep breath. "I've been feeling sick lately. In the mornings. I thought it was stress. But then I started to think..."

Adrian's face went still. "Think what?"

She took his hand and pressed it against her stomach.

"I think I'm pregnant."

Adrian stared at her. His face cycled through shock, disbelief, wonder, fear.

"Pregnant," he repeated.

"I'm not sure. Not yet. I wanted to wait to be certain. But after tonight—after everything Elena said—I needed you to know."

Adrian dropped to his knees in front of her, pressing his forehead against her stomach.

"A baby," he whispered. "Our baby."

Sara's hands cradled his head. "A Volkov baby. The one Natalia wants to destroy."

Adrian looked up at her. His eyes were burning.

"She won't touch you. She won't touch our child. I'll die before I let that happen."

Sara smiled through her tears. "Let's hope it doesn't come to that."

He stood, pulling her close.

"This changes everything," he said.

"It changes nothing." She touched his face. "We fight. We protect our family. We win. That's what we do."

Adrian kissed her.

And in the darkness, in the garden, surrounded by roses, they made a promise.

They would protect their family. Their future. Their child.

No matter what it cost.
