Chapter 40 - The Echoes of the Devourer

Chapter 39: The Echoes of the Devourer

The stone archway of the Forbidden West swallowed the pack as they moved deeper into a landscape that seemed to defy the laws of the natural world. Here, the trees weren't made of wood, but of a dark, obsidian-like glass that hummed with a low, dissonant vibration. The sapphire light from the Bone-Eater's staff was miles behind them now, and the only light they had was the faint, flickering pulse from the Omega's hands.

"The air is changing," the Alpha whispered, his ears twitching at sounds that were too high-pitched for the others to hear. "It's not just cold; it feels... hungry. Like the shadows are trying to peel the skin off our bones."

The Omega leaned heavily against a glass-tree, her face pale. The sacrifice of her essence had left a hollow ache in her chest. "He is near," she gasped, her eyes scanning the shifting darkness. "The Devourer isn't a creature of flesh. It's an ancient void that feeds on the light of the First Lineage. My sacrifice wasn't just a toll; it was a dinner bell."

Suddenly, the ground beneath them began to liquefy, turning into a dark, viscous oil. Several Omegas shrieked as they began to sink. The Alpha lunged forward, grabbing two of them by their collars and tossing them toward a solid ridge, but the more they struggled, the faster the shadows rose.

From the depths of the oil, a massive, faceless head emerged. It had no eyes, only a gaping maw that radiated a cold so intense it froze the very breath in their lungs. This was the Great Devourer—the guardian of the West's deepest secrets.

"Leave the Sun-Born," the creature spoke, its voice a thousand overlapping whispers of the dead. "Give me the spark, and the rest of you may crawl through the dirt to your freedom. Refuse, and this valley will be your eternal grave."

The Alpha stood between the creature and the Omega, his blade glowing with a dull, desperate reflection of her fading light. "We don't trade our own," he roared.

But the Omega stepped forward, despite her weakness. She knew that her fire was low, but she also knew that a cornered wolf is the most dangerous. "You want my light?" she challenged, her voice gaining a sudden, fierce strength. "Come and take it. But remember—even a dying sun can go supernova."
