Chapter 170 - The Echo of the Star-Eaters

Chapter 168: The Echo of the Star-Eaters

The journey back to the Iron Citadel felt different. The air didn't just carry the scent of pine and snow; it felt electric, as if a storm was brewing in the very fabric of reality. Above them, the crimson star pulsed like a heartbeat, and every time it did, the shadows on the ground seemed to twist and stretch in unnatural directions.

"It's not just a light," the Omega said, stopping at the edge of the Whispering Woods. "The signal is changing the environment. The forest is... scared."

The Alpha stood guard, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the treeline. "The Ancestor said they were already watching. If the environment is reacting, it means their influence is already touching the world."

Suddenly, the trees around them began to shiver, though there was no wind. From the shadows of the oaks, beings made of flickering, dark starlight emerged—The Star-Sentinels. They weren't solid like the Frost-Lurkers, nor were they spirits like the Wraiths. They were echoes of a distant power, sent to test the strength of the world's new defenders.

"They are here to find the resonance," the Ancestor whispered, her silver eyes glowing. "Do not use your full light, Omega. If they map your frequency now, the Star-Eaters will know exactly how to break you when they arrive."

The Alpha stepped forward, his claws extending. "Then we do this the old-fashioned way. Strength and steel."

But as the first Sentinel lunged, it didn't attack their bodies. It let out a high-pitched frequency that resonated with their very bones, forcing them to relive their deepest fears. The Alpha saw the Citadel in flames again, and the Omega saw herself losing her connection to the pack forever.

To win this fight, they would have to find a way to silence the echo without revealing their true power. The war of the heavens had reached the forest floor.
