Chapter 40: Noise
Jubilife City, GNN Broadcast Studio
"...and we can now confirm that the Valley Windworks has been fully reclaimed by joint Ranger-League forces after a six-day occupation by the organization known as Team Galactic. The operation, which began at dawn yesterday, resulted in the arrest of seventeen Galactic operatives and the rescue of fifteen Windworks employees who had been held inside the facility since the initial takeover."
She paused, shuffled her papers, looked back at the camera.
"Sinnoh Champion Cynthia released a statement this morning praising the coordination between ranger units and league trainers, calling the operation, and I quote, 'a reminder that Sinnoh's defense infrastructure is capable of responding to organized threats with precision and resolve.' She also confirmed that Galactic's energy extraction equipment was destroyed during the operation, though the purpose of that equipment remains under investigation."
Cut to a press conference. Cynthia standing behind a podium, composed, hair catching the studio light.
"What happened at the Windworks was unacceptable. A civilian facility was occupied for nearly a week, workers were held against their will, and a significant amount of public energy infrastructure was compromised. We will be reviewing our response times and protocols to ensure that this does not happen again."
A journalist in the front row raised his hand. "Champion, there are reports that a trainer, possibly as young as fifteen, entered the building independently during the assault and was involved in freeing the hostages. Can you confirm that?"
Cynthia's expression didn't change. "I'm aware of the reports. The details of individual actions during the operation are still being compiled by the ranger coordinators on site. I won't comment on specifics until I've reviewed the full briefing."
"But if a minor was involved in"
"I said I won't comment on specifics."
Undisclosed, Team Galactic
Three people sat around a table. Two in Galactic uniforms with command insignia. The third in a lab coat, reading from a tablet.
"Total loss on the extraction array," the one with the tablet said. "Every cable severed, every converter destroyed, the central relay unit completely crushed. Our engineers are saying three months minimum to rebuild, and that's only if we can source replacement components without drawing attention."
The woman across the table closed her eyes for a second. Commander Saturn's orders had been clear about the Windworks timeline. This was not going to be a pleasant report.
"The hostages?" she asked.
"All recovered by the league. Fifteen in total. They've been debriefed at Floaroma General. We have to assume they've described everything they saw inside, including the equipment layout and the personnel they interacted with."
"The guards we assigned to the holding room were subdued. By a single trainer, according to the grunt who monitored the console. He said a kid walked in with a Prinplup and told him to leave and he left."
Nobody said anything for a moment.
"A kid."
"That's what he said."
The man at the end of the table hadn't spoken yet.
"The news is reporting a fifteen-year-old trainer was involved. Do we have anything more than that?"
"No. The rangers aren't releasing names. Our people who escaped didn't get a good look. They were focused on evacuating when the main line collapsed."
"And Kenta?"
Silence.
"He was the one sent back inside when the east side breach was reported. He didn't make it back out before the situation was resolved."
"What happened then."
"There was an explosion on the east side. High-energy attack. The rangers have him in critical care at Floaroma General. No update since this morning."
The older man leaned back. His face didn't change but something behind it did.
"Kenta had a Skuntank and a Weavile. Both fully trained. Whatever did that to him wasn't an ordinary trainer's Pokémon."
"We don't know what it was. Nobody saw it clearly. The reports from the field say the blast came from somewhere near the side exit but by the time anyone got there the trainer was on the ground unconscious and whatever Pokémon did it was already recalled."
"So we don't know what Pokémon it was."
"No."
"We don't know who this trainer is."
"No."
The older man stood up. His hands hit the table hard enough that the tablet bounced. "WHAT DO WE KNOW? WE LOST THREE MONTHS OF WORK. ALL BECAUSE OF A KID." His voice filled the room and the woman across the table didn't flinch but the one with the tablet did. "YOU FIND HIM. I DON'T CARE HOW. DEAD OR ALIVE. EVEN IF HE IS A KID."
Everyone around the table stood. Saluted.
"YES SIR."
The older man straightened his jacket. Sat back down. When he spoke again his voice was quiet.
"Three months. Saturn is going to want an explanation. Make sure I have one that doesn't end with my name on the list of people who failed him."
Sinnoh League Regional Office, Jubilife City
The briefing room was small and overlit and smelled like coffee. Three people sat around a table covered in reports. Ranger operation summaries, damage assessments, personnel logs, arrest records.
Commander Hale had been reading for twenty minutes without saying anything. He was a large man with a patient face. The two officers across from him had learned not to interrupt.
He put the last page down.
"The operation itself was solid. Nolan's team executed well on the eastern perimeter. The main assault broke through on schedule. Seventeen arrests, fifteen hostages recovered, equipment destroyed." He paused. "What I want to talk about is this."
He tapped a section of the report.
"A trainer. Operating independently inside the facility during an active assault. Entered through a side door on the east perimeter after being specifically told not to enter the building."
Officer Tanaka leaned forward. "Ranger Nolan's debrief mentions him. A kid. Fifteen. One badge. He showed up during the operation and Nolan assigned him to the perimeter, small stuff, catching grunts trying to run. The kid handled it easily and then went inside on his own."
"On his own."
"Yes sir."
"And once he was inside?"
"Located and freed all fifteen hostages. Located and destroyed the energy extraction array. Then exited through the east side door and engaged a ranked Galactic operative in combat." Tanaka checked his notes. "The operative, identified as Kenta, had a Skuntank and a Weavile. Both fully evolved, both combat trained. The trainer's Prinplup went down. He recalled his Rhyhorn. And then..." Tanaka looked up. "Something happened. Nolan's report says there was an explosion consistent with a high-level dragon-type attack. The operative is in critical care. The trainer collapsed immediately after and was unconscious for several hours."
Hale leaned back. "What Pokémon does this trainer have registered?"
Tanaka pulled up another sheet. "Three Pokémon on file. Prinplup, Rhyhorn, and a Deino."
"Deino." Hale said it slowly. "That's not a Sinnoh Pokémon."
"No sir. Unova region. Rare even there from what I understand."
"How did he get it here? All the borders are closed. There should be almost no way for a Unova Pokémon to end up registered to a fifteen-year-old trainer in Sinnoh."
The third person at the table, Officer Sato, spoke for the first time. "Could have been smuggled in. We've had reports of cross-border trafficking through unofficial channels for years, most of it low-level, but every now and then something valuable slips through. A Deino from Unova would be worth a lot to the right buyer." She paused. "But there's nothing in his file that suggests involvement with any of that. No priors, no flags, no suspicious activity before this. It's possible he acquired it through legitimate means we're not aware of. Or it's possible someone brought it into the region and it ended up with him through a chain we can't see yet."
"Either way," Hale said, "a trainer with a Prinplup, a Rhyhorn, and a Deino beat a fully evolved Skuntank and Weavile. That's not something you see."
"No sir," Sato said. "It's not normal at all."
Quiet for a moment. The coffee maker in the corner gurgled.
"I don't want this kid's name in any public report," Hale said. "He's a minor and he was operating in an active combat zone. If the press gets his identity it becomes a circus." He looked at both of them. "But I want a file opened. Quietly. I want to know who he is, where he came from, how he got a Deino, and what exactly happened in that fight. Not because he did anything wrong. Because a fifteen-year-old who can do what he did is someone we need to be aware of."
"Monitoring level?"
"Passive for now. Flag his Pokédex in the system. If he does anything else notable, I want to hear about it."
Tanaka made a note. Sato nodded.
"And get me Nolan's full debrief," Hale added. "Not the summary. The full thing. I want to know what that ranger saw."
Oreburgh City, Pokémon Center
Lucas was eating cereal. The TV was on above the counter. He wasn't watching it. He was focused on the cereal.
"...fifteen-year-old trainer reportedly entered the Windworks facility independently during the ranger-led assault..."
Lucas looked up.
"...responsible for freeing fifteen hostages and disabling Galactic's energy extraction equipment. The trainer's identity has not been released..."
He put his spoon down.
Fifteen years old. Went in alone during a full assault. Freed hostages. Destroyed equipment.
Lucas stared at the screen. It could be anyone. There were other fifteen-year-old trainers in Sinnoh. Loads of them. It didn't have to be Ryan. Just because Ryan had been heading north toward the Windworks and was exactly the kind of person who would walk into a building full of criminals by himself didn't mean it was definitely him.
Except it was definitely him.
"Oh no," Lucas said.
He pulled out his phone. Started typing a message. Stopped. Deleted it. Started again. Stopped again.
What do you even say? Hey, was that you on the news? Because if it was, you're insane, and if it wasn't, sorry for assuming the worst about you, except I'm not sorry because you would absolutely do something like that.
He put the phone down.
"You're an idiot," he said to no one. Then, quieter: "Please be okay."
Jubilife City, Hotel Room
Mara sat on the edge of the bed with the news on. Third time through the broadcast. She wasn't watching it anymore, not really, just letting it play while she thought.
She picked up her notebook. Ryan's page. She'd started it a month ago in Sandgem with one word: manageable. She'd crossed it out weeks later. After the hologram call she'd written reassess.
She read through her notes. Everything she'd written. Everything she'd observed. The Deino in Rowan's lab. The way Ryan moved around Pokémon. The way he moved around people. The choices he made and the way he made them, careful but not cautious, like someone who already knew what was coming and had decided to walk toward it anyway.
She'd missed something. Not a detail. Something bigger. She'd been looking at Ryan as a variable to track and manage and work around if necessary. A fifteen-year-old trainer who was smart but young and in over his head and who would, eventually, do what fifteen-year-old trainers do and make the kind of mistakes that made them predictable.
He'd walked into a building full of Galactic operatives during an active military assault and walked out the other side having freed fifteen people and destroyed an operation that had taken months to set up. That wasn't a mistake. That wasn't a kid in over his head. That was someone making a choice and executing it and getting it done.
She wrote one line underneath everything else.
Underestimated.
She sat with that word for a while. Then she closed the notebook and turned off the TV and the room went dark and quiet.
She had decisions to make. Not tonight. But soon.
